Oil-in-Water fL Droplets by Interfacial Spontaneous Fragmentation and Their Electrical Characterization

2019

Inkjet printing is here employed for the first time as a method to produce femtoliter-scale oil droplets dispersed in water. In particular, picoliter-scale fluorinated oil (FC40) droplets are printed in the presence of perfluoro-1-octanol surfactant at a velocity higher than 5 m/s. Femtoliter-scale oil droplets in water are spontaneously formed through a fragmentation process at the water/air interface using minute amounts of nonionic surfactant (down to 0.003% v/v of Tween 80). This fragmentation occurs by a Plateau-Rayleigh mechanism at a moderately high Weber number (10(1)). A microfluidic chip with integrated microelectrodes allows droplets characterization in terms of number and diamet…

Self-assembled three-dimensional inverted photonic crystals on a photonic chip

2017

Three dimensional photonic crystals (PhCs) exhibiting a full photonic band gap have high potential in optical signal processing and detector applications. However, the challenges in the integration of the 3D PhCs into photonic circuits have so far hindered their exploitation in real devices. This article demonstrates the fabrication of 3D PhCs exploiting the capillary directed self-assembly (CDSA) of monodisperse colloidal silica spheres, their inversion to silicon shells, and integration with silicon waveguides. The measured transmission characteristics agree with numerical predictions and provide strong indication of a full photonic band gap in the inverted 3D photonic crystals at wavelen…

Spinterface: Crafting spintronics at the molecular scale

2014

A number of studies have suggested that molecular materials could offer similar performance as, or even potentially supersede, those of inorganic materials in spintronics devices. Radically new spintronics functionalities, unavailable with conventional inorganic materials, could stem from the interface between ferromagnetic (FM) and molecular materials, giving rise to the so-called “spinterface” field. In this article, we review the fundamental concepts, recent experiments, and perspectives in this fast rising field, where the functionality is brought from the bulk to the ultimate downscaled device: the interface. The article shows how spin-dependent hybridization at the FM metal/molecule i…

Fouling dynamics in suspension flows

2002

A particle suspension flowing in a channel in which fouling layers are allowed to form on the channel walls is investigated by numerical simulation. A two-dimensional phase diagram with at least four different behaviors is constructed. The fouling is modeled by attachment during collision with the deposits and by detachment caused by large enough hydrodynamic drag. For fixed total number of particles and small Reynolds numbers, the relevant parameters governing the fouling dynamics are the solid volume fraction of the suspension and the detachment drag force threshold. Below a critical curve in this 2D phase space only transient fouling takes place when the suspension is accelerated from re…

Cohesive–frictional interface constitutive model

2009

AbstractIn the framework of numerical analysis of joined bodies, the present paper is devoted to the constitutive modeling, via an interface kinematic formulation, of mechanical behaviour of internal adhesive layers. The proposed interface constitutive model couples a cohesive behaviour, based on the damage mechanics theory, with a frictional one, defined in a non-associative plasticity framework. Namely, the interface formulation follows the transition of the adhesive material from the sound elastic condition to the fully cracked one. This formulation is able to model, by means of a specific interpretation of the damage variable and in a relevant mathematical setting, the interface interme…

Mixed Mode Delamination Analysis by a Thermodynamically Consistent Cohesive Interface Model with Independent Mode I and Mode II Fracture Energies

2015

Abstract In the present paper a new thermodynamically consistent cohesive interface model is proposed; it based on a predefined Helmhotz free energy with a single scalar damage variable and produces two independent fracture energies, in pure mode I and pure mode II debonding conditions. The proposed model can also take in to account the frictional effects with a smooth transition of the mechanical behaviour, from the initial cohesive one of the sound material, to the frictional one of the fully debonded interface. The cohesive-frictional behaviour is based on the mesoscale geometric interpretation of the scalar damage variable, which distinguish sound and debonded fractions of a representat…

Calcium phosphate/polyvinyl acetate coatings on SS304 via galvanic co-deposition for orthopedic implant applications

2021

Abstract In this work, the galvanic deposition method is used to deposit coatings of brushite/hydroxyapatite/polyvinyl acetate on 304 stainless steel. Coatings are obtained at different temperatures and with different sacrificial anodes, consisting of a mixture of brushite and hydroxyapatite. Samples are aged in a simulated body fluid (SBF), where a complete conversion of brushite into hydroxyapatite with a simultaneous change in morphology and wettability occurred. The corrosion tests show that, compared with bare 304, the coating shifts Ecorr to anodic values and reduces icorr Ecorr, and icorr has different values at different aging times due to chemical interactions at the solid/liquid i…

Investigation of the porosity of silica and alumina with chemically bonded polystyrene

1996

The effect of modification of porous silica and alumina with a copolymer of styrene and vinylsilane on the porosity of oxides have been investigated by means of low temperature nitrogen sorption. Only small changes of the specific surface area and of the specific pore volume were observed on modification of oxides with non-cross-linked copolymer. The specific surface area significantly increased after the cross-linking of the deposited polymeric layer while the specific pore volume remains almost unaffected. A broad hysteresis loop appears in the nitrogen sorption isotherm for the alumina modified with the cross-linked polymer. The porosity of oxides modified by chemisorption method differe…

Dipoles in 4,12,4-graphyne

2021

Abstract In present work, B-N pairs as dipole source were introduced into 4,12,4-graphyne. According to the density functional theory (DFT) simulations, the electronic configurations of the doped 4,12,4-graphyne systems were significantly modified owing to the built-in electric fields caused by the B-N dipoles. Different B-N concentrations and arrangements can alter the electronic structure of 4,12,4-graphyne. Consequently, an obvious in-plane piezoelectricity can also be induced. Moreover, the direct band gap can be delicately modulated from 150 meV to 660 meV at PBE level. The B-N dipoles can also greatly enhance the light absorption instead of shifting the absorption region. According to…

Curvature radius measurement by optical profiler and determination of the residual stress in thin films

2019

Abstract The Stoney formula, based on the measurement of the substrate curvature, is often used for the determination of the thin films' residual stress. In this study, titanium nitride coatings were deposited by DC reactive magnetron sputtering on silicon substrates. An optical profiler was used to determine the curvature of the surface before and after coating. Two radii were then obtained, along the principal perpendicular directions of the surface curvature. A simple and efficient method to determine the experimental error on the stress calculation was developed taking into account the film thickness dispersion and the radii dispersion. Using constant deposition parameters, some samples…
