Differential Effects of Interruptions and Distractions on Working Memory Processes in an ERP Study

2020

Interruptions (interfering stimuli to respond to) and distractions (interfering stimuli to be ignored) have been shown to negatively impact performance, particularly in tasks requiring working memory (WM). This study investigated how these two types of external interference affect task performance and attentional and WM processes as indexed by specific event-related potentials (ERPs) of the EEG. A Continuous Number Task (CNT) was applied, in which participants had to either decide whether the current number (condition without WM load) or the sum of the current and the preceding number (condition with WM load) was odd or even while responding to interlaced single letters (interruptions) or i…

Clinical experience with retrievable vena cava filters: results of a prospective observational multicenter study

2005

Summary. Background: Retrievable inferior vena cava (IVC) filters offer the attractive possibility to be definitive or to be removed when they become unnecessary. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and the likelihood to remove the retrievable IVC filter ALN. Methods: A total of 30 patients (13 males and 17 females, mean age 57 ± 15 years) underwent placement of ALN filters. Indications for implantation were acute venous thromboembolism (VTE) with a contraindication to anticoagulation in 26 cases (86%), primary prophylaxis after major trauma in two cases (7%) or before surgery in two patients with very high thromboembolic risk (7%). Results: The filter was succ…

Flow barriers : What prevents software developers from experiencing flow in their work

2022

Software development requires high problem-solving skills and creativity, making it a profession with good opportunities to become immersed in a flow experience. The characteristics of flow experience are absorption, enjoyment, and intrinsic motivation toward the activity. This study aims to better understand the barriers that prevent software developers from experiencing flow at work. Previous research has mostly examined software developers’ productivity, flow being one component of productive workdays. This study addresses the research gap by exploring the barriers to experiencing flow in software development. A qualitative questionnaire was used to gather data about flow experiences fro…

The Employer Perception of Non-linear Educational Pathways. A Vignette Study with French Employers

2018

International audience; We explore the relationship between educational pathways and labour market entry with vignette study. We stimulate a hiring process with a sample of recruiters and we analyze the role of schooling discontinuities in the screening of applicant resumes. Applicant may follow di fferent pathways: some of them are graduated on time, others face delay because they had a job or because they traveled abroad. Then, we analyze the determinants of employers' preferences with regressions: the likelihood to hire the candidate is used as dependent variable. We show that temporary schooling interruption has a negative effect on recruiters rating if applicant do not specify the reas…
