Precision of a commercial hartmann-shack aberrometer: limits of total wavefront laser vision correction.

2012

Purpose To assess the intrasession and intersession precision of higher-order aberrations (HOAs) measured using a commercial Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor (Zywave; Bausch & Lomb) in refractive surgery candidates. Design Prospective, experimental study of a device. Methods To analyze intrasession repeatability, 1 experienced examiner measured 30 healthy eyes 5 times successively. To study intersession reproducibility, the same clinician obtained measurements from another 30 eyes in 2 consecutive sessions at the same time of day 1 week apart. Results For intrasession repeatability, excellent intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were obtained for total ocular aberrations, total HOAs, a…

Neddylation inhibition ameliorates steatosis in NAFLD by boosting hepatic fatty acid oxidation via the DEPTOR-mTOR axis

2021

Objective Neddylation is a druggable and reversible ubiquitin-like post-translational modification upregulated in many diseases, including liver fibrosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and more recently, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Herein, we propose to address the effects of neddylation inhibition and the underlying mechanisms in pre-clinical models of NAFLD. Methods Hepatic neddylation measured by immunohistochemical analysis and NEDD8 serum levels measured by ELISA assay were evaluated in NAFLD clinical and pre-clinical samples. The effects of neddylation inhibition by using a pharmacological small inhibitor, MLN4924, or molecular approaches were assessed in isolated mouse hep…

TESTICULAR SPERM EXTRACTION AND INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION

1998

We evaluate the efficacy of testicular sperm extraction and results of intracytoplasmic sperm injection in cases of nonobstructive azoospermia. In addition, we define predictive parameters for successful testicular sperm extraction in these patients.A total of 154 patients with nonobstructive azoospermia underwent multiple testicular biopsies to obtain testicular spermatozoa and for histopathological diagnosis. Results of testicular sperm extraction were related to suspected etiology of azoospermia, patient age, maximal testicular volume, serum follicle-stimulating hormone and histopathology. When testicular sperm extraction was successful, intracytoplasmic sperm injection was performed.Spe…

Cisternostomy for Traumatic Brain Injury: Pathophysiologic Mechanisms and Surgical Technical Notes

2016

Objective Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the major challenges in health care, representing the third most frequent cause of death. Current optimal management is based on a progressive, target-driven approach combining both medical and surgical treatment strategies. Here we describe cisternostomy, an emerging surgical treatment for the treatment of TBI. Methods Cisternostomy is a novel technique that incorporates knowledge of skull base and microvascular surgery. By opening the brain cisterns to atmospheric pressure, the technique could decrease the intracranial pressure due to a backshift of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the swollen brain to the cisterns through the Virchow-Rob…

Comparing indirect methods of digit ratio (2D:4D) measurement.

2008

The ratio of the lengths of the second and fourth finger (2D:4D) has been proposed to index prenatal exposure to androgens. Different methods have been utilized to measure digit ratio, however, their measurement precision and economy have not been systematically compared yet. Using different indirect methods (plastic ruler, caliper, computer software), three independent raters measured finger lengths of 60 participants. Generally, measurement precision (intraclass correlation coefficient, technical error of measurement, and relative technical error of measurement) was acceptable for each method. However, precision estimates were highest for the computer software, indicating excellent measur…

Transcranial Doppler ultrasound study of the effects of nitrous oxide on cerebral autoregulation during neurosurgical anesthesia: a randomized contro…

2003

Object. Nitrous oxide has an adverse effect on cerebrovascular hemodynamics. Increased intracranial pressure, cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral metabolic rate of O2 (CMRO2), and reduced autoregulation indices have been reported, but their magnitudes are still being debated. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of N2O on CBF and autoregulatory indexes during N2O—sevoflurane anesthesia in a prospective randomized controlled series of patients. Methods. Two groups of 20 patients were studied on the basis of the use of N2O in the anesthetic gas mixture. The transient hyperemic response test, which relies on transcranial Doppler ultrasound techniques, was used to assess cerebral hemo…

Reliability and validity of the form 90 interview.

2004

Objective: Alcohol consumption is a central variable in substance abuse research and treatment. The study reports the psychometric characteristics of the German version of the Form 90 interview for the assessment of recent alcohol consumption. Method: Reliability was evaluated in a test-retest study (7 days) with 30 consecutively admitted psychiatric inpatients with alcohol dependence. Validity of Form 90 was assessed with a second sample of 60 alcohol-dependent inpatients. Results: Form 90 demonstrated good to excellent retest reliability for the central variables of alcohol consumption. Retest reliability Pearson correlation coeffic…

Mutations in the gene encoding the basal body protein RPGRIP1L, a nephrocystin-4 interactor, cause Joubert syndrome.

However, details of the molecular mechanisms underlying these disorders remain poorly understood. RPGRIP1- like protein ( RPGRIP1L) is a homolog of RPGRIP1 ( RPGR-interacting protein 1), a ciliary protein defective in Leber congenital amaurosis(7,8). We show t…

Abnormal BAEP and internal auditory canal MRI in intracranial hypotension

2017

Intracranial hypotension (IH) is a treatable condition due to cerebrospinal fluid leak, characterised by variable clinical and MRI findings.1 Positional headache, neck stiffness, hearing changes with subdural fluid collection, enhancement of meninges, engorgement of venous structures and brain sagging are among the most frequent clinical and MRI findings. Typical abnormalities are found in 68%–85% of patients1. Hearing alterations (ranging from misperception to severe hearing loss) are known clinical symptoms of IH.1 The mechanism involves secondary perilymph depression due to patency of the cochlear aqueduct, inducing a compensatory expansion of the endolymphatic compartment, decreasing ba…
