Continuous Electrical Stimulation Affects Initial Growth and Proliferation of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells

2020

The aim of the study was to establish electrical stimulation parameters in order to improve cell growth and viability of human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSC) when compared to non-stimulated cells in vitro. hADSC were exposed to continuous electrical stimulation with 1.7 V AC/20 Hz. After 24, 72 h and 7 days, cell number, cellular surface coverage and cell proliferation were assessed. In addition, cell cycle analysis was carried out after 3 and 7 days. After 24 h, no significant alterations were observed for stimulated cells. At day 3, stimulated cells showed a 4.5-fold increase in cell numbers, a 2.7-fold increase in cellular surface coverage and a significantly increased proliferation.…

Monitoring of ticks and tick-borne pathogens through a nationwide research station network in Finland.

2020

In 2015 a long-term, nationwide tick and tick-borne pathogen (TBP) monitoring project was started by the Finnish Tick Project and the Finnish Research Station network (RESTAT), with the goal of producing temporally and geographically extensive data regarding exophilic ticks in Finland. In the current study, we present results from the first four years of this collaboration. Ticks were collected by cloth dragging from 11 research stations across Finland in May September 2015-2018 (2012-2018 in Seili). Collected ticks were screened for twelve different pathogens by qPCR: Borrelia afzelii, Borrelia garinii, Borrelia valaisiana, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, Borrelia miyamotoi, Babesia sp…

THU0569 MANAGEMENT OF ADULT-ONSET STILL’S DISEASE (AOSD) WITH IL-1 INHIBITORS: EVIDENCE- AND CONSENSUS-BASED STATEMENTS BY A PANEL OF ITALIAN EXPERTS

2019

Background: Still’s disease is a rare autoinflammatory disease, presenting in both pediatric [systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA)] and adult patients [adult-onset Still’s disease (AOSD]. Due to the rarity of the disease, clinical trials are limited and treatment guidelines are not available. In patients refractory to the classical therapy with NSAIDs, corticosteroids and DMARDs, the introduction of drugs targeting IL-1 has greatly expanded treatment options. Among these, canakinumab, a human monoclonal anti-IL-1β antibody, and anakinra, a human recombinant IL-1RA, have been recently approved for the treatment of refractory patients. Objectives: To produce recommendations, based on…

The effective and safe method for preventing and treating bacteria-induced dental diseases by herbal plants and a recombinant peptide

2020

Background This study was conducted aimed at evaluating the antibacterial property of the recombinant peptide of bacteriocin entrocin P (EnP), the essential oil of Cuminum cyminum, and the extract of Ferulago angulata on some oral pathogens. Besides, the cytotoxicity of EnP was evaluated. Material and methods The antimicrobial property was tested on streptococcus mutans (ATCC 35668), streptococcus salivarius (ATCC 9222), streptococcus oralis (ATCC 35037), and Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), using the microbroth dilution method. The 0.2% Chlorhexidin (CHX) mouthwash was used as the control group. Besides, the cytotoxicity analysis was done on gingival fibroblasts by the MTT colorimetric …

Histological and morphometric study of the components of the sinus and atrioventricular nodes in horses and dogs

2019

Abstract The cardiac nodes are the source of the electrical impulse that is transmitted to the heart, the aim of this work is study the histological and morphometric characteristics of the different components of the sinus and atrioventricular nodes in horses and dogs that help to know the physiopathology of these nodes. A group of ten horse hearts and five dog hearts were used. The region of the sinus and atrioventricular nodes was sectioned serially, and the block of tissue removed for study. The samples were assessed using a morphometric analysis with the Image-Pro Plus 7.1 software and the acquisition of the images using a Leica DMD108 optic microscope. The shape of the horse's sinus no…

Genome-wide association study of diabetic kidney disease highlights biology involved in renal basement membrane collagen

2018

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a heritable but poorly understood complication of diabetes. To identify genetic variants predisposing to DKD, we performed genome-wide association analyses in 19,406 individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) using a spectrum of DKD definitions basedon albuminuria and renal function. We identified 16 genome-wide significant loci. The variant with the strongest association (rs55703767) is a common missense mutation in the collagen type IV alpha 3 chain(COL4A3)gene, which encodes a major structural component of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) implicated in heritable nephropathies. The rs55703767 minor allele (Asp326Tyr) is protective against several definit…

Multisite field potential recordings and analysis of the impulse propagation pattern in cardiac cells culture

2007

To provide further insights into the impulse propagation between cardiac myocytes, we performed multiparametric studies of excitation spread with cellular resolution in confluent monolayers of cultured cardiomyocytes (CM). Simultaneous paired intracellular recordings of action potentials in two individual CM revealed slight periodic spontaneous advances/delays in the interspike time lag. Multisite field potential recordings performed with microelectrode arrays (MEA) confirmed random and iterative cycle-to-cycle changes in the direction of excitation spread. These local spontaneous variations in the cardiac impulse propagation pathways may be a safety process protecting against microscopical…

[Management of patients with lymphatic diseases and lipoedema during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recommendations of the Spanish Group of Lymphology].

2020

Autonomic Modulation Improves in Response to Harder Performances While Playing Wind Instruments

2020

Background: Despite inducing autonomic benefits similar to exercise, playing wind instruments is a physical, and cognitive task of high attentional requirements, which demands musicians maximal efforts, leading to sympathetic hyperarousal and autonomic worsening. In this context of controversy, it remains unknown the autonomic response to playing highly demanding music performances, as compared to an easier one, which might be of interest in wind musicians' cardiovascular health. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate differences in the autonomic control of the heart with regard to task demands (TD), avoiding emotional influences (rehearsal performance). Methods: Eight healthy male pro…

2021

Background: The purpose of this study was to collect and analyse the available scientific evidence on the effectiveness of shock wave therapy as a treatment for spasticity. Methods: the search was performed in the following databases: PubMed, PEDro, Cochrane, Embase, and the Virtual Health Library. All publications from November 2009 to November 2019 were selected that included a sample of patients with spasticity and prior suspension of botulinum toxin, to whom shock wave therapy was applied. The methodological quality of the articles was evaluated using the Jadad scale and the pyramid of quality of scientific evidence. Results: 25 studies involving 866 participants with spasticity were se…
