Scientific investigation to preserve our architectural heritage: experimental application in Sicily between 2002 and 2012

2014

The essay introduces the result of thermographic surveys and other scientific applications on some Sicilian monuments, and demonstrates the clear evolution of the method to support an effective conservation of ancient buildings. The method introduced is useful to get a metric thermal image to be edited with the photogrammetric image of the architectural surfaces simultaneously, and related with the results of other kind of diagnostic tests. Some examples of its application are introduced and critically commented to understand all the potentialities of the investigation in the discipline of the restoration of cultural heritage.

Propositions pour une littérature d'investigation

2017

Lucian, a new Odysseus? : role and issue of a Homeric character in the work of Lucian of Samosata

2015

The aim of our thesis, which comes within the scope of considering the process of rewriting classic texts in the time period of the second sophistic, is to study the unique importance of Odysseus in the writings of Lucian of Samosata. At first, Odysseus is distinguished from Achilles, a character more monolithic who, even in Homer’s works is constructed in contrast to Odysseus. Moreover, from an isolated quote to intricate references, scattered to create echoes between works seemingly very different, the context in which Odysseus appears is more elaborate and subtler than that of Achilles. Hence, studying and comparing references to both heroes is sufficient to imply Odysseus’ primacy, asso…

It is evident that our technological society is undoubtedly linked to the diffusion of images. Authors such as Gottfried Boehm John Mitchell Hans Belting investigated the nature of the image by laying the foundations in the 1990s for the idea of a pictorial turn of a culture totally dominated by images that has now become a real technical possibility on global scale. A new statute of the image that is used to collect under the label of iconic turner inserted in the wider field of visual culture studies. The use of the term culture alongside that of visual is indicative of the breadth of the field of investigation that visual culture studies aim to seek: they do not want to limit themselves to ascertaining the predominance of the visual in contemporary society and an evaluation of its aesthetic component. but they want to proceed towards an anthropological research in which visual culture is analyzed as a particular lifestyle that expresses certain meanings and values not only in art and high culture but also in institutions and daily behavior. We will try to apply this new paradigm to photographs: instead of asking ourselves what the images mean let's try to ask ourselves what they want.

An unprecedented hetero-bimetallic three-dimensional spin crossover coordination polymer based on the tetrahedral [Hg(SeCN)4]2− building block

2019

[EN] Self-assembly of octahedral FeII ions, trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl) ethane (bpe) bridging ligands and [Hg(XCN)(4)](2-) (X = S (1), Se (2)) tetrahedral building blocks has afforded a new type of hetero-bimetallic Hg-II-Fe-II spin-crossover (SCO) 3D 6,4-connected coordination polymer (CP) formulated {Fe(bpe)[Hg(XCN)(4)]}(n). For X = S (1), the ligand field is close to the crossing point but 1 remains paramagnetic over all temperatures. In contrast, for X = Se (2) the complex undergoes complete thermal induced SCO behaviour centred at T-1/2 = 107.8 K and complete photoconversion of the low spin state into a metastable high-spin state (LIESST effect) with T-LIESST = 66.7 K. The current results…

Photosensitive Alternative Splicing of the Circadian Clock Gene timeless Is Population Specific in a Cold-Adapted Fly, Drosophila montana.

2018

To function properly, organisms must adjust their physiology, behavior and metabolism in response to a suite of varying environmental conditions. One of the central regulators of these changes is organisms' internal circadian clock, and recent evidence has suggested that the clock genes are also important in the regulation of seasonal adjustments. In particular, thermosensitive splicing of the core clock gene timeless in a cosmopolitan fly, Drosophila melanogaster , has implicated this gene to be involved in thermal adaptation. To further investigate this link we examined the splicing of timeless in a northern malt fly species, <i&…

Emerging MEK inhibitors

2010

IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD: The Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK pathway is often activated by genetic alterations in upstream signaling molecules. Integral components of this pathway such as Ras and B-Raf are also activated by mutation. The Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK pathway has profound effects on proliferative, apoptotic and differentiation pathways. This pathway can often be effectively silenced by MEK inhibitors. AREAS COVERED BY THIS REVIEW: This review will discuss targeting of MEK which could lead to novel methods to control abnormal proliferation which arises in cancer and other proliferative diseases. This review will cover the scientific literature from 1980 to present and is a follow on from a review which fo…

Inferring heterozygosity from ancient and low coverage genomes

2016

Abstract While genetic diversity can be quantified accurately from high coverage sequencing data, it is often desirable to obtain such estimates from data with low coverage, either to save costs or because of low DNA quality, as is observed for ancient samples. Here, we introduce a method to accurately infer heterozygosity probabilistically from sequences with average coverage <1× of a single individual. The method relaxes the infinite sites assumption of previous methods, does not require a reference sequence, except for the initial alignment of the sequencing data, and takes into account both variable sequencing errors and potential postmortem damage. It is thus also applicable to …
