Laser spectroscopy measurement of isotope shifts and nuclear moments of short-lived neon isotopes
2003
Within the scope of a laser spectroscopy study of nuclear structure in the sd shell we are measuring nuclear moments and isotope shifts of neon isotopes. An ultra-sensitive variant of collinear laser spectroscopy [1, 2] is applied to a neutralized fast beam from ISOLDE (CERN). The non-optical detection is based on optical pumping, state selective collisional ionization and β-activity counting. This method gives access in particular to the short-lived isotopes in the extended chain of 17–26,28Ne.
Experiments with stored exotic nuclei at relativistic energies
2006
Abstract A review and recent progress are presented from experiments on masses and lifetimes of bare and few-electron exotic nuclei at GSI. Relativistic rare isotopes produced via projectile fragmentation and fission were separated in flight by the fragment separator FRS and injected into the storage ring ESR. This worldwide unique experimental method gives access to all fragments with half-lives down to the microsecond range. The great research potential is demonstrated by the discovery of new isotopes along with simultaneous mass and lifetime measurements. Single particle decay measurements and the continuous recording of both stored mother and daughter nuclei open up a new era for nuclea…
Isotope Shift Measurements for Superdeformed Fission Isomeric States
1998
Optical isotope shift measurements have been performed for the ${}^{240,242}{\mathrm{Am}}^{f}$ fission isomers with low target production rates of $10{\mathrm{s}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ employing resonance ionization spectroscopy in a buffer gas cell. Isotope shift ratios ${\mathrm{IS}}^{240f,241}/{\mathrm{IS}}^{243,241}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}39.2(8)$ and ${\mathrm{IS}}^{242f,241}/{\mathrm{IS}}^{243,241}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}41.4(8)$ have been measured at the 500.02 nm transition. A difference in the nuclear mean charge radii $\ensuremath{\delta}〈{r}^{2}{〉}_{\mathrm{opt}}^{242f,241}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}5.34(2…
Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure in the $\mathsf{ 3d ^2D_J \rightarrow 4p ^2P_J}$ transitions in calcium II
1998
The isotope shift and hyperfine structure in the three \(\) - transitions in Ca II have been studied by fast ion beam collinear laser spectroscopy for all stable Ca isotopes. The metastable 3d states were populated within the surface ionization source of a mass separator with a probability of about 0.1%. After resonant excitation to the 4p levels with diode laser light around 850 nm the uv photons from the \(\) transitions to the ground state were used for detection. Hyperfine structure parameters A and B for the odd isotope 43Ca, as evaluated from the splittings observed, agree well with theoretical predictions from relativistic many-body perturbation theory. Field shift constants \(\) and…
First observation of the β-decay of neutron-rich 215Pb and 218Bi by the pulsed-release technique and resonant laser ionisation
2003
The neutron-rich Tl, Pb and Bi isotopes are of exceptional interest to trace the evolution of single-particle levels away from the doubly magic 208Pb towards the neutron-rich side of the nuclear chart. While 208Pb is well understood in terms of the shell model, experimental data on the heavier isotopes is very scarce and it is far from clear to what extent the shell model is upheld [1]. Furthermore, large branchings ratios for β-delayed neutron emission are expected in this mass region, adding astrophysical interest to the subject [2].
Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure in calcium 4snp and 4snf F Rydberg states
2000
Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure have been measured in 4snp 1 P1 and Rydberg states for all stable calcium isotopes and the radioisotope 41Ca using high-resolution laser spectroscopy. Triple-resonance excitation via Rydberg state was followed by photoionization with a CO2 laser and mass selective ion detection. Isotope shifts for the even-mass isotopes have been analyzed to derive specific mass shift and field shift factors. The apparent isotope shifts for 41Ca and 43Ca exhibit anomalous values that are n-dependent. This is interpreted in terms of hyperfine-induced fine-structure mixing, which becomes very pronounced when singlet-triplet fine-structure splitting is comparable to the h…
Decay of Neutron-Rich Mn Nuclides and Deformation of Heavy Fe Isotopes
1998
The use of chemically selective laser ionization combined with beta-delayed neutron counting at CERN/ISOLDE has permitted identification and half-life measurements for 623-ms Mn-61 up through 14-ms Mn-69. The measured half-lives are found to be significantly longer near N=40 than the values calculated with a QRPA shell model using ground-state deformations from the FRDM and ETFSI models. Gamma-ray singles and coincidence spectroscopy has been performed for Mn-64 and Mn-66 decays to levels of Fe-64 and Fe-66, revealing a significant drop in the energy of the first 2+ state in these nuclides that suggests an unanticipated increase in collectivity near N=40.
Calculation of atomic properties of superheavy elements Z=110–112 and their ions
2020
We calculate the spectra, electric dipole transition rates, and isotope shifts of the superheavy elements Ds ($Z=110$), Rg ($Z=111$), and Cn ($Z=112$) and their ions. These calculations were performed using a recently developed, efficient version of the ab intio configuration-interaction combined with perturbation theory to treat distant effects. The successive ionization potentials of the three elements are also calculated and compared to lighter analogous elements.
Jet propagation through inhomogeneous media and shock ionization
2021
In this contribution we present the first numerical simulations of a relativistic outflow propagating through the inner hundreds of parsecs of its host galaxy, including atomic and ionised hydrogen, and the cooling effects of ionisation. Our results are preliminary, but we observe efficient shock ionization of atomic hydrogen in interstellar clouds. The mean density of the interstellar medium in these initial simulations is lower than that expected in typical galaxies, which makes cooling times longer and thus no recombination is observed inside the shocked region. The velocities achieved by the shocked gas in the simulations are in agreement with observational results, although with a wide…
The diagnostic potential of Fe lines applied to protostellar jets
2013
We investigate the diagnostic capabilities of the iron lines for tracing the physical conditions of the shock-excited gas in jets driven by pre-main sequence stars. We have analyzed the 300-2500 nm X-shooter spectra of two jets driven by the pre-main sequence stars ESO-Halpha 574 and Par-Lup 3-4. Both spectra are very rich in [FeII] lines over the whole spectral range; in addition, lines from [FeIII] are detected in the ESO-H\alpha 574 spectrum. NLTE codes along with codes for the ionization equilibrium are used to derive the gas excitation conditions of electron temperature and density, and fractional ionization. The iron gas-phase abundance is provided by comparing the iron lines emissivi…
