Radiosurgery of Carotid-Cavernous Fistulae

25 cases of carotid-cavernous fistulae (CCF) who underwent radiosurgery with a conventional gamma source from 1977 to 1992 are reported. 22 were low-flow, spontaneous CCFs and 3 were high flow fistulae which had undergone a previous trApplng. The total dose delivered was 30 to 40 Gy. 91% to patients with low-flow CCF cured after radiosurgery in a mean time of 7.5 months, presenting improvent in a mean time of 2.3 months. Only one of the high-flow fistulae was cured. Follow-up period ranged between 14 years and 15 months (mean: 50 months). No recurrence was recorded in any case. For the first time it has been proven that cholest-4-ene-3-one is an endogenous constituent of adrenal tissue. Concentrations of cholestenone in quartered rat adrenals after 3 hours of in vitro incubation were comparable to those of progesterone. However, from specific radioactivities of tissue cholesterol and progesterone and from those of tissue cholestenone and progesterone after incubations with either 4-14C-cholesterol or 4-14C-cholestenone it has been concluded that, at best, cholestenone plays a minimal role as a C27-intermediate of corticosteroid biosynthesis.

Aim: To identify prophylactic antibiotic prescription practices among Spanish dentists with preferential dedication to Oral Surgery in different types of tooth extraction surgeries. Method: Members of the Spanish Oral Surgery Society were surveyed on antibiotic prophylaxis use in 4 different tooth extraction modalities scaled according to their surgical invasiveness. Results: Sixty-nine of the 105 distributed questionnaires were returned completed. Cryptosporidium parvum is an intracellular parasite causing enteritis which can become life-threatening in the immunocompromised host. CD4+ T cells and interferon (IFN)-gamma play dominant roles in host immune response to infection. However, effector mechanisms that are responsible for recovery from infection are poorly understood. In the present study we analyzed mice deficient in IFN-gamma or interleukin (IL)-12 in parallel to C57BL/6 wild type mice as models for murine cryptosporidiosis.
