Effects of an incremental maximal endurance exercise stress-induced cortisol on cognitive performance

2019

Exercise; Cognitive functions; Cortisol Ejercicio físico; Funciones cognitivas; Cortisol Exercici físic; Funcions cognitives; Cortisol Objectives: It can be hypothesized that cognitive performance decreases after fatigue protocol when it coincides with the maximum peak of cortisol. The first aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of a single bout of high intensity exercise on behavioural (i.e., attention and memory) and physiological (i.e., salivary cortisol) responses. The second objective was to evaluate the effect of the performance of the cognitive tasks on cortisol levels. Methods: Thirty-four physically active men (at least 5 days/week of physical activity practice) 38.11 (1.5…

Invasive mechanical ventilation; COVID-19; Critical care Ventilación mecánica invasiva; COVID-19; Cuidado crítico Ventilació mecànica invasiva; COVID-19; Atenció crítica Background Up to 30% of hospitalised patients with COVID-19 require advanced respiratory support, including high-flow nasal cannulas (HFNC), non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIV), or invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). We aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, outcomes and risk factors for failing non-invasive respiratory support in patients treated with severe COVID-19 during the first two years of the pandemic in high-income countries (HICs) and low middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods This is a multin…

In Silico Conformational Features of Botulinum Toxins A1 and E1 According to Intraluminal Acidification

2022

International audience; Although botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) are among the most toxic compounds found in nature, their molecular mechanism of action is far from being elucidated. A key event is the conformational transition due to acidification of the interior of synaptic vesicles, leading to translocation of the BoNT catalytic domain into the neuronal cytosol. To investigate these conformational variations, homology modeling and atomistic simulations are combined to explore the internal dynamics of the sub-types BoNT/A1 (the most-used sub-type in medical applications) and BoNT/E1 (the most kinetically efficient sub-type). This first simulation study of di-chain BoNTs in closed and open s…

Effect of Mycorrhizal Inoculation on Melon Plants under Deficit Irrigation Regimes

2023

The shortage of good quantity and quality of water for irrigated agriculture is a major problem in arid and semiarid regions. To deal with this problem, deficit irrigation (DI) or arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation have been proposed and adopted for many crops as a tool to save water, or to improve crop tolerance to drought stress. An experiment was conducted for two consecutive years to evaluate the effect of mycorrhizal inoculation on the physiological, morphological, yield, and quality characteristics of melon plants grown under deficit irrigation. Melon crop (Cucumis melo L. cv. Helios) was grown under field conditions adopting a split-plot design with four replications, whe…

Abstract 857: Metal oxide nanoparticles as adjuvant for radiation therapy

2018

Abstract Background: Radiation therapy comprises a fundamental component of modern tumor treatment. Unfortunately, its success is limited by the development of radiation resistances. The emerging field of nanotechnology offers great opportunities for diagnosing, imaging, as well as treating cancer. Metal oxide nanoparticles in particular zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NP) have been shown to display a selective cytotoxic effect on tumor cells via a yet unknown mechanism. Most likely the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), breakdown of mitochondria and DNA damage are involved. The success of radiation therapy equally relies on the generation of ROS, which develop their cytotoxic poten…

Improved bioaccessibility and antioxidant capacity of olive leaf ( Olea europaea L.) polyphenols through biosorption on Saccharomyces cerevisiae

2016

Abstract Olive ( Olea europaea L.) leaves (OL) are natural by-products that can be used as an advantageous rich source of bioactive compounds, especially polyphenols. This study investigated the potential use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a new carrier of OL antioxidants and a means to protect their bioactivity during simulated gastrointestinal digestion. The biosorption on S. cerevisiae allowed the recovery of 25.17 mg/g and 49.40% of the polyphenols from olive leaf (var. Chemlali ) infusions. Both infusions and suspensions before and after biosorption were analyzed for total soluble polyphenols and total antioxidant capacity (oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and trolox equivalen…

Considering syntrophic acetate oxidation and ionic strength improves the performance of models for food waste anaerobic digestion.

2021

Current mechanistic anaerobic digestion (AD) models cannot accurately represent the underlying processes occurring during food waste (FW) AD. This work presents an update of the Anaerobic Digestion Model no. 1 (ADM1) to provide accurate estimations of free ammonia concentrations and related inhibition thresholds, and model syntrophic acetate oxidation as acetate-consuming pathway. A modified Davies equation predicted NH3 concentrations and pH more accurately, and better estimated associated inhibitory limits. Sensitivity analysis results showed the importance of accurate disintegration kinetics and volumetric mass transfer coefficients, as well as volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and hydrogen up…

2011

Cet article a fait l'objet d'une discussion dans "Morris, C. E., Sands, D. C., Bardin, M., Jaenicke, R., Vogel, B., Leyronas, C., Ariya, P. A., and Psenner, R.: Microbiology and atmospheric processes: an upcoming era of research on bio-meteorology, Biogeosciences Discuss., 5, 191-212, doi:10.5194/bgd-5-191-2008, 2008."; International audience; For the past 200 years, the field of aerobiology has explored the abundance, diversity, survival and transport of micro-organisms in the atmosphere. Micro-organisms have been explored as passive and severely stressed riders of atmospheric transport systems. Recently, an interest in the active roles of these micro-organisms has emerged along with prop…
