Glycopolymer Functionalization of Engineered Spider Silk Protein-based Materials for Improved Cell Adhesion

2014

Silk protein-based materials are promising biomaterials for application as tissue scaffolds, due to their processability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. The preparation of films composed of an engineered spider silk protein (eADF4(C16)) and their functionalization with glycopolymers are described. The glycopolymers bind proteins found in the extracellular matrix, providing a biomimetic coating on the films that improves cell adhesion to the surfaces of engineered spider silk films. Such silk-based materials have potential as coatings for degradable implantable devices.

Synthesis and bio-functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles for medical diagnosis and treatment

2011

The synthesis of multifunctional magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) is a highly active area of current research located at the interface between materials science, biotechnology and medicine. By virtue of their unique physical properties magnetic nanoparticles are emerging as a new class of diagnostic probes for multimodal tracking and as contrast agents for MRI. Furthermore, they show great potential as carriers for targeted drug and gene delivery, since reactive agents, such as drug molecules or large biomolecules (including genes and antibodies), can easily be attached to their surface. On the other hand, the fate of the nanoparticles inside the body is mainly determined by the interactions wi…

Behavior of carbohydrate-based material in black liquor during heating

2004

One industrial softwood Kraft black liquor was heat-treated (at 175 ?C and 190 ?C for 15-60 min) together with laboratory-made soda-AQ (wheat straw and reed canary grass) and Kraft (reed canary grass) black liquors (at 190 ?C for 30 min). The feedstock black liquors were characterized with respect to their polysaccharide (mainly xylem) and aliphatic carboxylic acid contents before and after the heat treatments. It was noted that, due to the higher amount of polysaccharides in the non-wood black liquors (8.2-16.6% of d.s) compared to that in the softwood black liquor (1.4% of d.s), the heat treatment in the former case resulted in a 5-30% increase in the amount of aliphatic acids formed by v…

Modulation of Fatty Acid Patterns During Protoplast Isolation

1983

Protoplast isolation and regeneration is known from numerous plant species (Binding et al. 1). But there are plant species which show very unconstant regeneration or no reaction at all, even if the isolation showed high viability of the protoplasts. Does this lacking response only depend on medium composition and effectors or are there other unknown conditions? The procedure of protoplast isolation and the use of strong hypertonic media is a dramatic disturbance of cell metabolism and might be a stress situation, which cannot be overcome by the cell. Fleck et al. (2) reported “osmotic-stress proteins” in Nicotiana sylvestris protoplasts and Kaiser et al. (3) showed a remarkable influence of…

A new equipment to measure the combined effect of humidity, temperature, mechanical stress and UV exposure on the creep behaviour of polymers

2008

To be able to study and predict the physical properties of a polymeric material under different environmental conditions is very important. Moisture, UV irradiation, thermal and mechanical stresses can dramatically change the characteristics of the material and hinder some specific applications. In this work, a new equipment able to perform creep tests under different environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, stress) is presented. Some preliminary results are also presented using a sample of polyamide 6. As this polymer is sensitive to all these variables, it is appropriate to verify the effectiveness of the new instrument.

Experimental Evaluation on Narrow Band Power Line Communication in Medium and Low Voltage Smart Grids

2013

The aim of this work is to perform a feasibility study on the power line communication for the development of a new generation of interface devices (IDs) for smart grid and energy storage applications. More in detail, this paper deals with one of the most important issues on this topic, which is the communication system. Among the existing communication technologies, the study is focused on power line communications (PLCs). After an analysis of the state of the art in the field, the main aspects are analyzed, concerning the open issues on the use of PLCs, especially for medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) systems. In this work the use of PLC in MV-LV networks is investigated, by means …
