Measurement Issues for the Characterization of Medium Voltage Grids Communications

2013

This paper is focused on the measurement issues and procedures for the characterization of medium voltage grids for narrowband power line communications (NB-PLCs), in the perspective of the use and integration of such technology into smart grids communication networks. The fundamentals are given for the characterization of the PLC channel, by means of noise and attenuation measurements. Suitable procedures are also developed for the characterization and modeling of the power system components in the frequency range of interest. Furthermore, the complete model of the PLC system is experimentally validated in a real case study.

Optical Fibre Control-Measurement Systems Of Compound HV/HP Electrical Equipment

1988

Responsible electrical equipment should be controlled during the work in care of their high reliability. Traditional control measurement systems cannot fulfil the task because of the hard conditions in which the equipment may operate (various electrical potentials, electromagnetic interferences, changes of temperature, etc.). The development of fibre optic transmission media and fibre optic sensors allows the construction of new control measurement systems for cooperation with such electrical equipment as: converters, generators, treLnsforniens, switch bays, busbards, etc. Those optical fibre structures, composed of bu-ses and sensors are subject of this paper. The main attention is paid to…

Research Toward The Optical Equipment For An Autonomous Robot For TviV Environment

1989

The paper consists of three major parts: basic technical problems in very high power/megavolt environment, signal processing and mechanical equipment for this environment, construction of a sensor equipped robot for this environment. The first part contains mainly metrological confinements and reliability considerations for the optical, optoelectronic and electronic part of a system. The second part contains mechanics and robotics problems. The result of these two parts is a choice of a system to be realized.

Interior permanent magnet synchronous motors: Impact of the variability of the parameters on their efficiency

2016

In the scientific literature, various authors presented different control strategies aimed to increase the efficiency of the interior permanent magnet synchronous motors. These strategies, starting from a well-known mathematical model of the dynamic behaviour of the motor, are able to reduce the power losses acting on the magnetizing component of the stator current. However, none of the proposed approaches takes into account that, varying the working conditions of the motor, also the values of the parameters, which have an impact on the power losses, can vary. In this paper, therefore, starting from an accurate measurement of the motor characteristics for various values of speed and load, w…

A cogging torque minimization procedure for IPMSMs based on different laminate geometry

2016

This paper presents a possible minimization procedure of the cogging torque generated by an IPMSM (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine) with a progressive modification of a basic geometrical structure of rotor laminates. More in detail, an IPMSM model is analyzed by using a Finite Element Method (FEM) approach. Then, other IPMSM models, which are obtained by modifying the geometry of the IPMSM rotor laminates and by maintaining the same stator configuration, are proposed and discussed. From the obtained simulation results, the cogging torque components for each structure are determined by means of FEM and compared to each other. From this comparison, it can be stated that the cogg…

Medium Voltage Smart Grid: Experimental Analysis of Secondary Substation Narrow Band Power Line Communication

2013

This paper is focused on the possibility of employing narrow band power line communication (PLC) in medium voltage (MV) distribution networks. The topic is investigated by means of both simulations and experimental tests, which were carried out in the distribution network of Ustica Island. In detail, a two-way MV communication was tested between two secondary substations connected by an MV cable power line. Each substation has a by-pass connection at MV bus-bars and an MV/LV oil filled power transformer. In this paper, the MV and the PLC systems under test are described and the experimental tests are presented, which were carried out to evaluate the parameters of the simulation model. The a…

Controlled Fault-Tolerant Power Converters for Power Quality Enhancement

2013

Power quality depends generally on the interaction of electrical power with electrical equipments. If electrical equipments operate correctly and reliably without being damaged or stressed, a suitable level of power quality is assured. On the other hand, if the electrical equipment malfunctions, is unreliable, or is damaged during normal usage, power quality is poor and probably the economical loss could be important like the technical one. In the scenario of the Distributed Generation, power quality issues will be moreover important because an higher dissemination of power conditioning equipment will be requested and this obviously increases the sources of vulnerability of the electrical s…

Experimental study on efficiency enhancement in Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous machines

2015

This paper presents an experimental study on the efficiency variation occurring in an IPMSM (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) with respect to the direct axis current component and for several working conditions. Such investigation is the starting point for the arrangement of a speed control drive system equipped with a real-time power losses minimization algorithm. More in detail, a test bench is set up to carry out the measurements needed for the final power loss identification. The experimental investigation is developed by performing tests at different speed, magnetization and load conditions. From the obtained results, it can be stated that the IPMSM efficiency can be maximi…

Compact instrumentation for radiation tolerance test of flash memories in space environment

2010

Aim of this work is the description of a test equipment, designed to be integrated on board of a microsatellite, able to investigate the radiation tolerance of non-volatile memory arrays in a real flight experiment. An FPGA-based design was adopted to preserve a high flexibility degree. Besides standard Program/Read/Erase functions, additional features such as failure data screening and latch-up protection have been implemented. The instrument development phase generated, as a by-product, a non-rad-hard version of the instrument that allowed performing in-situ experiments using 60Co and 10 MeV Boron irradiation facilities on Ground. Preliminary measurement results are reported to show the i…

The Use of Accelerometers and Gyroscopes to Estimate Hip and Knee Angles on Gait Analysis

2014

In this paper the performance of a sensor system, which has been developed to estimate hip and knee angles and the beginning of the gait phase, have been investigated. The sensor system consists of accelerometers and gyroscopes. A new algorithm was developed in order to avoid the error accumulation due to the gyroscopes drift and vibrations due to the ground contact at the beginning of the stance phase. The proposed algorithm have been tested and compared to some existing algorithms on over-ground walking trials with a commercial device for assisted gait. The results have shown the good accuracy of the angles estimation, also in high angle rate movement.
