Effect of Channel-Quality Indicator Delay on HSDPA Performance
2007
This paper evaluates the effect of the channel estimation inaccuracy on the performance of an HSDPA system. This study provides some results from system level simulations that have been conducted over a very complete dynamic simulator which models an HSDPA system full compliant with specifications. This emulator allows performing multi-user transmission and link adaptation with a limited modulation and coding scheme (MCS) selection based on the channel quality indicator (CQI) modes. Many factors such as the user equipment (UE) speed, the employed scheduling algorithm or the traffic load have been considered in the assessment. Moreover the intrinsic constraints of a WCDMA system like HSDPA h…
A Non-Invasive Thermal Drift Compensation Technique Applied to a Spin-Valve Magnetoresistive Current Sensor
2011
A compensation method for the sensitivity drift of a magnetoresistive (MR) Wheatstone bridge current sensor is proposed. The technique was carried out by placing a ruthenium temperature sensor and the MR sensor to be compensated inside a generalized impedance converter circuit (GIC). No internal modification of the sensor bridge arms is required so that the circuit is capable of compensating practical industrial sensors. The method is based on the temperature modulation of the current supplied to the bridge, which improves previous solutions based on constant current compensation. Experimental results are shown using a microfabricated spin-valve MR current sensor. The temperature compensati…
Noise risk assessment in a bottling line of a modern Sicilian winery
2013
In wine industry, bottling is a phase of the production cycle characterized by high levels of noise mostly due to repeated collisions between the bottles. In Italy the Law Decree 81/2008 defined the requirements for assessing and managing noise risk, identifying a number of procedures to be adopted at different noise levels to limit workers exposure. This study aims at evaluating the equivalent and peak noise level inside the bottling plant area of a modern Sicilian winery. In particular, the influence of the working capacity (number of bottles produced per hour) on noise levels was evaluated. We considered three test conditions: T1 with working capacity of 4,000 bottles per hour, T2 with w…
Reconfigurable digital instrumentation based on FPGA
2004
A novel application of FPGA to realize digital test equipment is proposed. It takes advantage of the dynamic reconfigurability of FPGAs so easily tailoring custom test functions in the same instrument. This results in high effective, compact and low cost instruments.
Synchronization in Vehicle Routing—A Survey of VRPs with Multiple Synchronization Constraints
2012
This paper presents a survey of vehicle routing problems with multiple synchronization constraints. These problems exhibit, in addition to the usual task covering constraints, further synchronization requirements between the vehicles, concerning spatial, temporal, and load aspects. They constitute an emerging field in vehicle routing research and are becoming a “hot” topic. The contribution of the paper is threefold: (i) It presents a classification of different types of synchronization. (ii) It discusses the central issues related to the exact and heuristic solution of such problems. (iii) It comprehensively reviews pertinent literature with respect to applications as well as successful s…
Cogging torque comparison of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators with different stator windings
2017
This paper presents the comparison between the cogging torques produced by four IPMSGs (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators) with different stator winding configurations. More in detail, an IPMSG model, which is derived from a commercial geometry, is analyzed through means of a FEM (Finite Element Method) approach. Then, three more structures are determined and analyzed by adequately changing the number of stator slots of the basic IPMSG stator structure and by maintaining the same rotor configuration. From the obtained simulation results, the cogging torque components for each structure are determined and compared. From this comparison, it can be stated that the use of dissymm…
Narrowband power line communications for medium voltage smart grids
2014
The aim of the paper is to show how narrowband power line communications (NB-PLCs) can be a valid solution for medium voltage grids. Advantages and drawbacks of this solution are analyzed, starting from some experimental communication results, which were carried out on the medium power system networks of the islands of Ustica and Favignana, in the presence of the net voltage. Furthermore, some communication architectures and hardware prototypes based on NB-PLCs are proposed for different smart grids applications.
Exploring FPGA‐Based Lock‐In Techniques for Brain Monitoring Applications
2017
Functional near‐infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) systems for e‐health applications usually suffer from poor signal detection, mainly due to a low end‐to‐end signal‐to‐noise ratio of the electronics chain. Lock‐in amplifiers (LIA) historically represent a powerful technique helping to improve performance in such circumstances. In this work a digital LIA system, based on a Zynq® field programmable gate array (FPGA) has been designed and implemented, in an attempt to explore if this technique might improve fNIRS system performance. More broadly, FPGA‐based solution flexibility has been investigated, with particular emphasis applied to digital filter parameters, needed in the digital LIA, and its …
Finite-element performance comparison of IPMSMs with unsymmetrical double-layer windings
2017
This paper presents a comparison of the performances between IPMSMs (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine) with a symmetrical and with two different types of unsymmetrical windings. The aim is to demonstrate that the adoption of slightly unsymmetrical windings does not significantly affect the performances of the machines, both in terms of cogging torque and torque/load angle characteristics, providing also the advantage of a higher possibility of choice in terms of slot number/poles ratio. More in particular, an IPMSM model (named IPMSM-1) derived from a commercial geometry equipped with a symmetrical winding is analyzed by using a Finite Element Method (FEM) approach. The simulat…
Push-and-pull enteroscopy using a single-balloon technique for difficult colonoscopy.
2006
Background and study aims Several factors predict difficult or incomplete colonoscopy with a standard colonoscope, including female gender, low body mass index, extensive diverticulosis, and prior pelvic surgery. Patients and methods A push-and-pull enteroscopy device and a single-balloon technique was used in 14 patients (six men, eight women; mean age 62 +/- 15 years) after failure of ileocolonoscopy or endoscopic therapy using either a standard or a pediatric colonoscope. The original ileocolonoscopy had been performed to investigate colon polyps (n = 6), an obscure inflammatory process in the ileocecal region (n = 6), or iron deficiency anemia with a positive fecal occult stool test (n …
