Corneo-scleral contact lens in a piggyback system for keratoconus: A case report.

2017

Purpose: We describe a case of fitting a corneo-scleral contact lens with a multi-aspheric geometry design (MAGD CScL) on top of a daily silicone hydrogel lens (piggyback system) for keratoconus management. Methods: A 48-year-old man using soft toric contact lenses required an improvement in the unsatisfactory quality of his vision. He presented with bilateral asymmetric keratoconus with high myopia in the right eye (RE) and severe myopia in the left eye (LE). In addition, he had low vision in his LE because of a maculopathy. He was fitted with MAGD CScL to correct his irregular astigmatism. A diagnostic trial set was used in the fitting process and the patient was assessed according to a s…

Comparison of 2 Zero-Profile Implants in the Treatment of Single-Level Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy: A Preliminary Clinical Study of Cervical Disc…

2016

Objectives Cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) with Discover prosthesis or anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with Zero-P cage has been widely used in the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). However, little is known about the comparison of the 2 zero-profile implants in the treatment of single-level CSM. The aim was to compare the clinical outcomes and radiographic parameters of CDA with Discover prosthesis and ACDF with Zero-P cage for the treatment of single-level CSM. Methods A total of 128 consecutive patients who underwent 1-level CDA with Discover prosthesis or ACDF with Zero-P cage for single-level CSM between September 2009 and December 2012 were included in…

Effect of custom-made and prefabricated foot orthoses on kinematic parameters during an intense prolonged run

2020

Foot orthoses are one of the most used strategies by healthy runners in injury prevention and performance improvement. However, their effect on running kinematics throughout an intense prolonged run in this population is unknown. Moreover, there is some controversy regarding the use of custom-made versus prefabricated foot orthoses. This study analysed the effect of different foot orthoses (custom-made, prefabricated and a control condition) on spatio-temporal and angular (knee flexion and foot eversion) kinematic parameters and their behaviour during an intense prolonged run. Twenty-four recreational runners performed three similar tests that consisted of running 20 min on a treadmill at 8…

Clinical effectiveness and safety of a distraction-rotation knee brace for medial knee osteoarthritis

2015

Abstract Objective Evaluation of the clinical effectiveness and safety of a new custom-made valgus knee brace (OdrA) in medial knee osteoarthritis (OA) in terms of pain and secondary symptoms. Methods Open-label prospective study of patients with symptomatic medial knee OA with clinical evaluation at 6 and 52 weeks (W6, W52). We systematically assessed pain on a visual analog scale (VAS), Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), spatio-temporal gait variables, use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and analgesic-sparing effects of the brace and tolerance. Mean scores were compared at baseline, W6 and W52 and the effect size (ES) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI…

Patient Alert to detect ICD lead failure: efficacy, limitations, and implications for future algorithms.

2006

Aims An algorithm that alerts implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) patients, in case of abnormal lead impedance (Patient Alert™, Medtronic), may help to recognize lead dysfunction. We aimed to determine the utility of Patient Alert for ICD lead-failure detection in a prospective study. Methods and results Three hundred and sixty ICD patients were followed for 22±14 months. Patient Alert was active for pacing impedance 2000–3000 Ω, and high-voltage conductor impedance 200 Ω. Ten alert events and a total of 29 severe system complications occurred. Patient Alert detected three of 10 ICD lead failures, with a positive predictive value (PPV) of 77.8% for any severe system complication. R…

Polymeric Nanocarriers for Magnetic Targeted Drug Delivery: Preparation, Characterization, and in Vitro and in Vivo Evaluation

2013

In this paper the preparation of magnetic nano- carriers (MNCs), containing superparamagnetic domains, is reported, useful as potential magnetically targeted drug delivery systems. The preparation of MNCs was performed by using the PHEA-IB-p(BMA) graft copolymer as coating material through the homogenization−solvent evaporation method. Magnetic and nonmagnetic nanocarriers containing flutamide (FLU-MNCs) were prepared. The prepared nanocarriers have been exhaustively characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and magnetic measurements. Biological evaluation was performed by in vitro cytotoxicity and cell uptake tests and in vivo biodistribution …

Quantitative assessment and localization of the hollowing of the temple after craniectomy and cranioplasty–The frontozygomatic shadow

2021

Background After cranioplasty, in many cases a not negligible soft tissue defect remains in the temporozygomatical area, also referred to as a hollowing defect of the temple. Objective To assess the precise localization and volume of the hollowing defect, to optimize future cranioplasties. Methods CT data of patients who received craniectomy and conventional CAD cranioplasty in our institution between 2012 and 2018 were analyzed. CT datasets prior to craniectomy and after cranioplasty were subtracted to quantify the volume and localization of the defect. Results Out of 91 patients, 21 had suitable datasets. Five cases had good cosmetic results with no defect visible, 16 patients had an app…

Medial buttressing of the quadrilateral surface in acetabular and periprosthetic acetabular fractures

2020

Background In geriatric acetabular fractures, the quadrilateral plate is often involved in the fracture pattern and medially displaced. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) includes reduction of the quadrilateral plate and securing its position. In this study, the concept of medial buttressing in acute and periprosthetic acetabular fractures is evaluated. Materials and methods Patients, who sustained an acetabular fracture between 2012 and 2018, in whom ORIF with a specific implant for medial buttressing was performed, were included in the study. Patients were divided in two groups; acute acetabular fractures (group 1) and periprosthetic acetabular fractures (group 2). Demographics,…

Adherence to the Mediterranean Lifestyle and Desired Body Weight Loss in a Mediterranean Adult Population with Overweight: A PREDIMED-Plus Study

2020

Background. Body weight dissatisfaction is a hindrance to following a healthy lifestyle and it has been associated with weight concerns. Objectives. The aim of this study was to assess the association between the adherence to the Mediterranean lifestyle (diet and exercise) and the desired body weight loss in an adult Mediterranean population with overweight. Methods. Cross-sectional analysis in 6355 participants (3268 men; 3087 women) with metabolic syndrome and BMI (Body mass index) between 27.0 and 40.0 kg/m2 (55–75 years old) from the PREDIMED-Plus trial. Desired weight loss was the percentage of weight that participants wished to lose. It was categorized into four cut-offs of this perce…

Waterjet Dissection of Peripheral Nerves: An Experimental Study of the Sciatic Nerve of Rats

2010

BACKGROUND: Although waterjet dissection has been well evaluated in intracranial pathologies, little is known of its qualities in peripheral nerve surgery. Theoretically, the precise dissection qualities could support the separation of nerves from adjacent tissues and improve the preservation of nerve integrity in peripheral nerve surgery. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential of the new waterjet dissector in peripheral nerve surgery. METHODS: Waterjet dissection with pressures of 20 to 80 bar was applied on the sciatic nerves of 101 rats. The effect of waterjet dissection on the sciatic nerve was evaluated by clinical tests, neurophysiological examinations, and histopathological studies up …
