Inheritance of resistance to aBacillus thuringiensistoxin in a field population of diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella)

1995

Inheritance of resistance to the Bacillus thuringiensis Berl. CryIA(b) crystal protein was studied in Plutella xylostella L. (diamondback moth). A field population 50-fold more resistant to CryIA(b) than a control susceptible strain was used. Dose-mortality curves of the resistant population, the susceptible strain and the F 1 from the two reciprocal crosses were compared. Resistance transmission to the F 1 was dependent on the sex of the resistant progenitor. Sex ratio of the survivors to high doses of CryIA(b) in the F 1 of the two reciprocal crosses did not corroborate the preliminary hypothesis of resistance being due to a recessive sex-linked allele. Since, in a previous work, the loss…

Occurrence of antibiotics and risk of antibiotic resistance evolution in selected Kenyan wastewaters, surface waters and sediments

2019

Active pharmaceutical ingredients, especially antibiotics, are micropollutants whose continuous flow into hydrological cycles has the potential to mediate antibiotic resistance in the environment and cause toxicity to sensitive organisms. Here, we investigated the levels of selected antibiotics in four wastewater treatment plants and the receiving water bodies. The measured environmental concentrations were compared with the proposed compound-specific predicted no-effect concentration for resistance selection values. The concentration of doxycycline, amoxicillin, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin within the influents, effluents, surface waters and river sediments…

Treatment of giardiasis reverses "active" coeliac disease to "latent" coeliac disease.

2001

In patients with coeliac disease, a regression of intestinal damage without a gluten-free diet is a very rare event. We describe a young child with diarrhoea, intestinal mucosa atrophy and positive serum anti-endomysial and anti-tissue transglutaminase (anti-tTG) antibodies during intestinal giardiasis infection. He showed normal intestinal mucosa architecture and negative anti-endomysial and anti-tTG antibodies after his giardiasis was cured, although he continued to assume a normal diet. Re-evaluations on a 6-monthly basis showed that he was symptom free, and all haemato-chemical parameters were within normal limits. Three years after the initial diagnosis, a third intestinal biopsy showe…

Secondary impairment of pancreatic function as a cause of severe malabsorption in intestinal giardiasis: A case report

1997

We report the case of a 54-year-old male patient hospitalized for diarrhea and weight loss (8 kg over the previous three months). At admission, we observed pale oral and conjunctival mucosa and peripheral edema of the lower limbs. Stool frequency was 8-10 per day. Laboratory data were as follows: hemoglobin, 11 g/dL; total proteins, 4.3 g/dL; albumin, 2 g/dL; pseudocholinesterase, 1248 U/L; triglycerides, 54 mg/dL; serum cholesterol, 102 mg/dL; calcium, 7.9 mg/dL. Fecal fat was 8.2 g/24 hr. Fecal chymotrypsin (FCT) was 2.3 U/g. A duodenal probe was performed after administration of intravenous secretin and cerulein stimulation, and a contemporaneous mucosal biopsy was taken at the ligament …

Analysis of pharmaceutical preparations containing antihistamine drugs by micellar liquid chromatography

2005

Rapid chromatographic procedures for analytical quality control of pharmaceutical preparations containing antihistamine drugs, alone or together with other kind of compounds are proposed. The method uses C18 stationary phases and micellar mobile phases of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with either 1-propanol or 1-butanol as organic modifier. The proposed procedures allow the determination of the antihistamines: brompheniramine, chlorcyclizine, chlorpheniramine, diphenhydramine, doxylamine, flunarizine, hydroxyzine, promethazine, terfenadine, tripelennamine and triprolidine, in addition to caffeine, dextromethorphan, guaifenesin, paracetamol and pyridoxine in different pharmaceutical …

Cystic degeneration of uterine leiomyoma during ulipristal acetate treatment

2016

Degenerative cyst formation  is a rare phenomenon in-between uterine leiomyomas, however, both patients and physicians have to be aware of this possibility when using ullipristal acetate as this event may guide to the inaccurate diagnosis of an adnexal malignant pathology.

Informal male caregivers in the city of Valencia. An experience of reciprocity

2018

Synthesis and induction of G0–G1 phase arrest with apoptosis of 3,5-dimethyl-6-phenyl-8-(trifluoromethyl)-5,6-dihydropyrazolo[3,4-f][1,2,3,5]tetrazep…

2007

The multistep synthesis of 3,5-dimethyl-6-phenyl-8-(trifluoromethyl)-5,6-dihydropyrazolo[3,4-f][1,2,3,5]tetrazepin-4(3H)-one 15 has been carried out. The compound showed antiproliferative and apoptotic effects against K562, K562-R (imatinib mesilate resistant), HL60 and multidrug resistant (MDR) HL60 cell lines. Compound 15 showed a pro-apoptotic activity against HL60 and K562 resistant cell lines markedly higher than etoposide and busulfan, respectively. Flow cytometry studies carried out on K562 cells allowed to establish that 15 induces G0-G1 phase arrest followed by apoptosis.
