SiC Based Latching Current Limiter for High Voltage Space Power Distribution Systems
2018
This study presents a novel Latching Current Limiter topology, based on a N-channel Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFET as the main switching element. The design has been carried out using only discrete components, without digital controllers. This design has been validated by simulation and with a prototype. Tests have been performed at 1000V, modifying the limitation times, current-limiting values and eventually checking the proper operation of the system.
Flow measurement using circular portable flume
2018
Abstract The circular portable flume is a simple device to measure discharge in circular drainage networks. Since the unit can be easily installed and removed, it is helpful in water distribution measurement and management. First in this paper the available studies are reviewed for highlighting the effect of both the contraction ratio and the flume slope on the stage-discharge relationship. Then the Buckingham's Theorem of the dimensional analysis and the self-similarity theory are used to deduce the stage-discharge curve of the circular flume. The new theoretical stage-discharge equation is calibrated by the literature available experimental data and those obtained in this experimental inv…
A comprehensive comparison between halophilic granular and flocculent sludge in withstanding short and long-term salinity fluctuations
2018
The effects of salinity fluctuations on the activity of autochthonous halophilic bacteria in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and flocculent activated sludge (FAS) reactors were investigated. The response of nitrifiers and denitrifiers activity to drastic and moderate salinity shocks in the short-term (ST) and long-term (LT) was examined. The BOD5removal efficiency decreased only in the reactors subjected to the drastic LT salinity increase. Nevertheless, stable performances were achieved 18 days after the shock in the AGS-R1 (90%), whereas after 27 days in the FAS-R1 (82%). The loss in nitritation efficiency was higher in the FAS reactors and was proportional to the shock intensity. Nitritati…
Robust Network Agreement on Logical Information
2011
Abstract Logical consensus is an approach to distributed decision making which is based on the availability of a network of agents with incomplete system knowledge. The method requires the construction of a Boolean map which defines a dynamic system allowing the entire network to consent on a unique, global decision. Previous work by the authors proved the method to be viable for applications such as intrusion detection within a structured environment, when the agent's communication topology is known in advance. The current work aims at providing a fully distributed protocol, requiring no a priori knowledge of each agent's communication neighbors. The protocol allows the construction of a r…
Aircraft wing rock oscillations suppression by simple adaptive control
2020
Abstract Roll angular motion of the modern aircraft operating in non-linear flight modes with a high angle of attack often demonstrates the limit cycle oscillations, which is commonly known as the wing rock phenomenon. Wing rock dynamics are represented by a substantially non-linear model, with parameters varying over a wide range, depending on the flight conditions (altitude, Mach number, payload mass, etc.) and angle of attack. A perspective approach of the wing rock suppression lies in the adaptation methods. In the present paper an application of the simple adaptive control approach with the Implicit Reference Model (IRM) is proposed and numerically studied. The IRM adaptive controller …
Geometrical deviation of end-of-life parts as a consequence of reshaping by single point incremental forming
2021
AbstractPutting in place circular economy strategies is an urgent challenge to face. In this scenario, manufacturing processes play a relevant role as efficient material reuse enabler. Scientists have to make an effort either to find new process or to rethink old process to reprocess end-of-life (EoL) component to recover both material and functions. In this paper, single point incremental forming (SPIF) process is used for reshaping sheet metal EoL components. The entire process chain was replicated including both deep drawing process (to imitate the end-of-life component) as well as SPIF operations (to obtain the reshaped components). The geometrical deviation as a consequence of SPIF ope…
Manufacturing processes as material and energy efficiency strategies enablers: The case of Single Point Incremental Forming to reshape end-of-life me…
2021
Abstract Making materials consumes about 21% of the global energy demand; concerning metals production, it accounts for about 8% of total global energy consumption. Circular economy strategies such as longer life, more intense use, repair, product upgrades, modularity, remanufacturing, component reuse, and open/closed-loop recycling are strategies to put in place urgently to reduce the environmental impact of raw material production. Although recycling of metals is the most used strategy and is being improved in terms of efficiency, it is mandatory moving towards more virtuous circular economy strategies, such as product/component reuse. In this paper a novel reuse strategy for sheet metal …
Anti-swing control of a hydraulic loader crane with a hanging load
2021
Abstract In this paper, anti-swing control for a hydraulic loader crane is presented. The difference between hydraulic and electric cranes are discussed to show the challenges associated with hydraulic actuation. The hanging load dynamics and relevant kinematics of the crane are derived to create the 2-DOF anti-swing controller. The anti-swing controller is added to the electro-hydraulic motion controller via feedforward. A dynamic simulation model of the crane is made, and the control system is evaluated in simulations with a path controller in actuator space. Simulation results show significant reduction in the load swing angle during motion. Experiments are carried out to verify the perf…
Classification and Review of Pump-Controlled Differential Cylinder Drives
2019
Pump-controlled hydraulic cylinder drives may offer improved energy efficiency, compactness, and plug-and-play installation compared to conventional valve-controlled hydraulic systems and thus have the potential of replacing conventional hydraulic systems as well as electro-mechanical alternatives. Since the late 1980s, research into how to configure the hydraulic circuit of pump-controlled cylinder drives has been ongoing, especially in terms of compensating the uneven flow requirements required by a differential cylinder. Recently, research has also focused on other aspects such as replacing a vented oil tank with a small-volume pressurized accumulator including the consequences of this i…
A Novel Solution for the Elimination of Mode Switching in Pump-Controlled Single-Rod Cylinders
2020
This paper concerns the stability issue of pump-controlled single-rod cylinders, known as mode switching. First, a review of the topic is provided. Thereafter, the most recently proposed solution for the elimination of mode switching is investigated and shown to result in unstable behavior under certain operating conditions. A theoretical analysis is provided demonstrating the underlying mechanisms of this behavior. Based on the analysis, a novel control strategy is proposed and investigated numerically. Proper operation and stability are demonstrated for a wide range of operating conditions, including situations under which the most recently proposed solution results in unstable behavior a…
