Relative efficiency revealed: Equations for k<inf>1</inf>–k<inf>6</inf> of the PVGIS model

The European PV Geographical Information System (PVGIS) describes module performance in terms of the relative efficiency with respect to Standard Testing Conditions (STC). The efficiency's dependence on irradiance and operating temperature is modeled with a bi-quadratic polynomial with respect to the relative temperature and the logarithm of relative irradiance. In earlier works, the present author derived relations between two model coefficients describing the irradiance dependence at 25°C, k 1 and k 2 , and I–V curve model parameters such as the series resistance RS and the ideality factor n. Primary production calculations for sea ice from bio-optical observations in the Baltic Sea

Abstract Bio-optics is a powerful approach for estimating photosynthesis rates, but has seldom been applied to sea ice, where measuring photosynthesis is a challenge. We measured absorption coefficients of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), algae, and non-algal particles along with solar radiation, albedo and transmittance at four sea-ice stations in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea. Self-similar focusing with generalized devil's lenses

[EN] We introduce the generalized devil's lenses (GDLs) as a new family of diffractive kinoform lenses whose structure is based on the generalized Cantor set. The focusing properties of different members of this family are analyzed. It is shown that under plane wave illumination the GDLs give a single main focus surrounded by many subsidiary foci. It is shown that the total number of subsidiary foci is higher than the number of foci corresponding to conventional devil's lenses; however, the self-similar behavior of the axial irradiance is preserved to some extent. UV Index experimental values on vertical surfaces

UV erythemal irradiance (UVER) has been studied on a horizontal plane and on vertical surfaces with different orientations in Valencia, Spain. The evolution of the solar noon value and the maximum daily value over a year has been analysed from the instantaneous UVER taken every five minutes on the horizontal plane and on vertical surfaces with north, south, east and west orientations. The annual evolution of these values shows a sinusoidal form for all planes except for the vertical south plane with maxima in spring and autumn. Approaches to partitioning the global UVER irradiance into its direct and diffuse components in Valencia, Spain

[1] The paper explores methods of partitioning the hourly average UV erythemal flux into its direct and diffuse components for Valencia, Spain. It is shown that the cloud modification factor, the ratio of measured to cloudless erythemal flux relates linearly to the fraction of the measured irradiance that is diffuse. This relationship was developed further into two simple models- a linear and nonlinear one. The models are characterized by an effective cloud cover to partition the global erythemal flux. Design of a sun tracker for the automatic measurement of spectral irradiance and construction of an irradiance database in the 330-1100 nm range

Abstract An automatic global and direct solar spectral irradiance system has been designed based on two LICOR spectroradiometers equipped with fibre optics and remote cosine sensors. To measure direct irradiance a sun tracker based on step motors has been developed. The whole system is autonomous and works continuously. From the measurements provided by this system a spectral irradiance database in the 330–1100 nm range has been created. This database contains normal direct and global horizontal irradiances as well as diffuse irradiance on a horizontal plane, together with total atmospheric optical thickness and aerosol optical depth.

Zero axial irradiance by annular screens with angular variation

For optical alignment, it may be convenient to use a three-dimensional diffraction pattern with zero irradiance along the optical axis. This pattern is created here by using annular screens in the form of a phase daisy, a daisy flower, or a pie, with an even number of slices of an equal central angle and with every other slice with a phase retardation of 180 degrees . We recognize this form of angular variation as a particular solution of a wider set of functions that are able to produce zero axial irradiance.

Stability of the performance of thin film modules during one year of operation

At the University of Agder in Grimstad, Southern Norway, a test bench for photovoltaic modules is in operation since December 2010. Currently, various c-Si as well as aSi, CIS and HIT modules are under investigation. This project is part of the Norwegian contribution to IEA PVPS Task13. The paper focuses on the stability of the modules' MPP-performance in the course of one year. A preliminary assessment of a detailed two stream short-wave narrow-band model using spectral radiation measurements

Abstract A data bank of measurements of global, direct and diffuse solar spectral irradiances at ground level for clear skies has been compiled for Valencia (Spain) dating back to December 1992. The measurements were made with a commercial Li-cor 1800 spectroradiometer with a range of 300–1100 nm and a spectral resolution of 6 nm. A preliminary comparative assessment has been carried out between the experimental data and model data.
