Instantaneous hourly and daily radiation on tilted surfaces

1991

A simple model to evaluate the irradiance incident on tilted surfaces of various orientations is proposed in this paper. It is based on the knowledge of the monthly daily average values of global and diffuse radiation on horizontal surfaces and their distributions over a period of a day. These distributions are approximated by a modified Gaussian expression with two parameters, which take into account the morning-to-afternoon asymmetries. Integrating the irradiance over a period of an hour or a day, values of monthly hourly average and daily on variously oriented surfaces have been calculated for the locations of Barcelona, Genoa, and Montreal. The calculated values are generally in good ag…

An approach to day ahead forecasting of solar irradiance with an application to energy gain in solar thermal collectors

2014

Masteroppgave i fornybar energi ENE 500 Universitetet i Agder 2014 Today, for the management of energy supply systems forecast information on load and theproduction of meteorology dependent (wind, solar, hydro) generation is ever rising. Solarirradiance forecasting is given a unique priority as it spans over major applications such asmanagement of grids with a high share of photovoltaic generation and thermal power supplysystems relying on solar heat generation. This thesis will address the day ahead prediction of thelocal irradiances intended to be applied for the management of solar assistant systems for heat andhot water supply. The forecast method presented here is based on the statisti…

Comparison of aircraft measurements during GoAmazon2014/5 and ACRIDICON-CHUVA

2019

Abstract. The indirect effect of atmospheric aerosol particles on the Earth's radiation balance remains one of the most uncertain components affecting climate change throughout the industrial period. The large uncertainty is partly due to the incomplete understanding of aerosol–cloud interactions. One objective of the GoAmazon2014/5 and the ACRIDICON (Aerosol, Cloud, Precipitation, and Radiation Interactions and Dynamics of Convective Cloud Systems)-CHUVA (Cloud Processes of the Main Precipitation Systems in Brazil) projects was to understand the influence of emissions from the tropical megacity of Manaus (Brazil) on the surrounding atmospheric environment of the rainforest and to investiga…

Numerical procedures and their practical application in PV modules’ analyses. Part II: Useful fractions and APE

2019

Abstract The article regards aspects of PV modules tested with the use of natural sunlight. The analysis of spectral structure of solar energy resources in southern Poland, carried out on the basis of meteorological data originating from SolarLab PW Wroclaw and AGH Krakow, Poland [ 1 ] was used in the article. It is a continuation of the article: Analysis of solar energy resources in southern Poland for photovoltaic applications [ 1 ], describing the method to determine spectral parameters of average photon energy (APE) and useful fraction (UF) with the use of a solar radiation spectrum simulator. This article, however, includes an experimental presentation of their impact on PV conversion …

Recovery Capabilities of Rateless Codes on Simulated Turbulent Terrestrial Free Space Optics Channel Model

2013

Free Space Optics (FSO) links are affected by several impairments: optical turbulence, scattering, absorption, and pointing. In particular, atmospheric optical turbulence generates optical power fluctuations at the receiver that can degrade communications with fading events, especially in high data rate links. Innovative solutions require an improvement of FSO link performances, together with testing models and appropriate channel codes. In this paper, we describe a high-resolution time-correlated channel model able to predict random temporal fluctuations of optical signal irradiance caused by optical turbulence. Concerning the same channel, we also report simulation results on the error mi…

Proof of Concept of an Irradiance Estimation System for Reconfigurable Photovoltaic Arrays

2015

In order to reduce the mismatch effect caused by non-uniform shadows in PV arrays, reconfigurable interconnections approaches have been recently proposed in the literature. These systems usually require the knowledge of the solar radiation affecting every solar module. The aim of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness of three irradiance estimation approaches in order to define which can be well suited for reconfigurable PV arrays. It is presented a real-time solar irradiance estimation device (IrradEst), implementing the three different estimation methods. The proposed system is based on mathematical models of PV modules enabling to estimate irradiation values by sensing a combination …

Fuzzy modeling of solar irradiance on inclined surfaces

2003

A model of solar irradiance on arbitrarily oriented inclined surfaces is proposed, based on fuzzy logic procedures. The behavior of the proposed model is similar to that of other models of increased performance such as the models of Perez or Gueymard, though it requires only a very limited number of classes and adjustable parameters. The use of fuzzy clustering optimizes the number and definition of the sky categories. The model considers overlapping clusters and allows an improved description of the sky situations close to the transition zone between contiguous categories.

Experimental values of the UV index during 2000 at two locations in Mediterranean Spain

2002

During the past 2 years automatic measurements of UVB solar irradiance have been made sstematically at ground level at a number of points in Spain. Values for both the ultraviolet erythemal radiation and the ultraviolet index (UVI) have been obtained from these measurements. In this paper we present a first analysis of these values for two locations on the Spanish Mediterranean coast—Valencia and Barcelona—an area where a large part of the summer tourism of the country is concentrated. During the summer the UVI only reached ten on three occasions, though a value of nine was reached repeatedly (both classified as extreme risk by the World Health Organization). It has been shown that, in 90% …

Flux heterogeneity and evapotranspiration partitioning in a sparse canopy: the fallow savanna

1997

Abstract This paper focuses on in situ measurements obtained during the intensive observation period of the HAPEX-Sahel experiment. Micrometeorological measurements and trunk sap flow monitoring were combined to analyse transfer characteristics of a fallow savanna site within the East Central Supersite. Results show that the shrub canopy heterogeneity induces a large spatial variability of solar irradiance, soil heat flux and sensible and latent heat fluxes at the grassland level. This variability is induced by both a “shade effect” and a “wake effect”. Both shrubs and grassland provide sources of vapour, but the partitioning of evapotranspiration between these two components varies conside…
