Colour centres in LiBaF3 crystals

Abstract The origin of the absorption bands in LiBaF 3 created by X-ray irradiation at RT has been investigated. It is found that three absorption bands at 270, 320 and 430 nm represent different electron transitions within a radiation defect effectively created in LiBaF 3 single crystals. Following the Mollwo–Ivey relation we discuss investigations of optical dichroism, magnetic optical dichroism, as well as the assumptions regarding the accumulation kinetics of these absorption bands, the F centre being the main radiation defect created by X-rays in undoped LiBaF 3 crystals at RT.

Transient absorption spectra and relaxation kinetics in Nb-doped PbWO4 scintillating crystals

Abstract The spectra and relaxation kinetics of absorption induced by a pulsed electron beam were studied for undoped and Nb-doped PbWO 4 single crystals. A significant influence of Nb doping on transient absorption was found. The influence of Nb doping on the relaxation kinetics is proposed to be due to an oxygen vacancy involving electron–hole recombination. A delay was observed (35– 50 ns ) between the growth of F-centers and the irradiation pulse. A large portion of the F-centers decays within ∼16 μs due to recombination with mobile holes. The prolonged recombination processes are responsible for the decrease of the scintillation yield in PbWO 4 : Nb crystals.

Room Temperature Instability of E′γ Centers Induced by γ Irradiation in Amorphous SiO2

We study by optical absorption measurements the stability of E'(gamma) centers induced in amorphous silica at room temperature by gamma irradiation up to 79 kGy. A significant portion of the defects spontaneously decay after the end of irradiation, thus allowing the partial recovery of the transparency loss initially induced by irradiation. The decay kinetics observed after gamma irradiation with a 0.6 kGy dose closely resembles that measured after exposure to 2000 pulses of pulsed ultraviolet (4.7 eV) laser light of 40 mJ/cm(2) energy density per pulse. <title>Primary radiation defect formation in silver halides</title>

Under irradiation the formation of primary intrinsic defects in silver halide solid solutions AgBr1-xClx take place via strong exciton-phonon interaction. Efficiency of these defects formation depend on solid solution composition and within 0 <EQ x <EQ 0.15 dependence on temperature was observed too. On/Off Photoswitching in a Cyanide-Bridged {Fe2Co2} Magnetic Molecular Square

International audience; A repeatable bidirectional paramagnetic ↔ diamagnetic photomagnetic effect has been observed in the cyanide-bridged Fe-Co square complex {[Fe{B(pz)(4)}(CN)(3)](2)[Co(bik)(2)](2)}(ClO(4))(2)*3H(2)O [B(pz)(4) = tetrapyrazolylborate, bik = bis(1-methylimidazol-2-yl)ketone]. Magnetic measurements and low-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments have shown that a complete electron transfer from the diamagnetic Fe(II)-Co(III) state to the paramagnetic Fe(III)-Co(II) metastable state is induced by 808 nm laser light irradiation, whereas the diamagnetic state is recovered in an almost quantitative yield under irradiation at 532 nm.

The molecular and metabolic alterations preceding the clinical manifestation of a photobiologic process, the erythematous or sunburn reaction, were investigated in mammalian skin in vivo. The effect of a moderate (2.5–3 times the minimal erythema dose [MED]) and a large (6–8 times MED) dose of ultraviolet radiation (290–320 nm) on the incorporation of [ Me - 3 H]-thymidine into epidermal cell DNA of guinea pigs was studied. Peri-implant parameters in head and neck reconstruction: influence of extraoral skin or intraoral mucosa.

Objective: This study is designed to assess dental implants supporting overdentures in edentulous patients with operated head and neck malignancies using parameters to detect peri-implant disease. Material and methods: Thirty-four implants supporting overdentures in 34 oral cancer patients were examined. Response ofBacillus subtilis spores to dehydration and UV irradiation at extremely low temperatures

Spores of Bacillus subtilis have been exposed to the conditions of extreme dehydration (argon/silica gel; simulated space vacuum) for up to 12 weeks at 298 K and 80 K in the dark. The inactivation has been correlated with the production of DNA-double strand-breaks. The temperature-dependence of the rate constants for inactivation or production of DNA-double strand-breaks is surprisingly low. Controls kept in the frozen state at 250 K for the same period of time showed no sign of deterioration. Flow‐Injection Chemiluminescent Determination of Thiamine in Pharmaceutical Samples by On‐line Photodegradation

Abstract A simple, sensitive, and precise method for the determination of thiamine hydrochloride in a flow‐injection system is described. The method is based on the UV irradiation of thiamine in acid medium. Then, the photo‐fragments are oxidized by permanganate in acid medium, and the resultant chemiluminescent intensity is measured. The optimum conditions for the photoreaction and for the chemiluminescence emission were investigated. The method allows the determination of thiamine, over the range 0.05(LOD)–84 mg · l−1, with a throughput of 30 h−1, and a RSD (n, 20) at 20 and 0.5 mg · l−1 of the thiamine level of 2.5 and 1.3%, respectively.
