Photocatalytic H2 production over inverse opal TiO2 catalysts

Abstract The influence of BiVO4 and CuO on the chemico-physical properties of TiO2-based systems is reported. The performances of these systems were investigated in the photocatalytic H2 production both under UV and solar light irradiation. The characterization data pointed out that the obtained TiO2 samples have highly porous inverse opal structures with interconnected macropores. Inverse opal TiO2 exhibited higher activity in the H2 production than the commercial TiO2 due to the peculiar porosity that allows photons to enter inside the photocatalyst. The use of ionizing radiation in order to initiate polymerization of suitable monomers has found increased interest in the last two decades due to its several advantages. In this work, carbon fiber composites through gamma radiation polymerization of epoxy matrices have been produced for aerospace and advanced automotive applications. Composite samples were produced by irradiation at room temperature using different radiation doses and, as reference, thermal curing of the same epoxy resin formulations was also carried out. On thermal influence of laser beam irradiation on optical absorption of amorphous as-evaporated As2S3 films

Abstract Photoinduced changes of the optical absorption in amorphous as-evaporated As 2 S 3 thin films are studied. Before the measurements films were kept at dark for more than two years. The long storage time ensured that the relaxational structural changes caused by the deposition process were absent. As a light source a CW unfocused 488.0 nm Ar laser line was used. The intensity of the laser beam was varied from rather low intensity values up to intensities which raised the temperature of the films above the glass transition temperature. Carbon–tungsten layers deposited on graphite by thermionic vacuum arc (TVA) were directly irradiated with a femtosecond terawatt laser. The morphological and structural changes produced in the irradiated area by different numbers of pulses were systematically explored, both along the spots and in their depths. Although micro-Raman and Synchrotron-x-ray diffraction investigations have shown no carbide formation, they have shown the unexpected presence of embedded nano-diamonds in the areas irradiated with high fluencies. Wavelength influence on nitrogen insertion into titanium by nanosecond pulsed laser irradiation in air

Abstract We studied in this work the influence of the wavelength (532 vs. 1064 nm) on the insertion of nitrogen in titanium targets by surface laser treatments in air. The laser pulses were of 5 ns and the irradiance was lower than 25 × 10 12 W/m 2 . Results obtained using a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm were compared with those previously reported for laser treatments at 1064 nm. Nuclear reaction analysis and micro-Raman spectroscopy were used for determining the composition and the structure of the surface layers, respectively. Silica nanoparticle core structure examined by the E?Si? center 29Si strong hyperfine interaction

Abstract β-Ray irradiation up to 1.2 GGy was employed to induce E′Si γ defects and to study the structure of silica nanoparticles with diameters from 7 up to 20 nm. Defect concentration and their 29 Si strong hyperfine doublet were investigated through electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. Our data indicate that stable defects are located in the nanoparticle core. Furthermore, the E′Si γ hyperfine interaction evidences that the core structure is denser than bulk silica and independent from the particle size. Finally, we put in evidence that the core structure is stable and unaffected by the irradiation in the investigated dose range maintaining the specific features of nanoparticles.
Low-K factor of SiO2 layer on Si irradiated by YAG:Nd laser

Abstract The change of optical and electrical properties of SiO2 layer on Si single crystal exposed to YAG:Nd laser radiation has been found experimentally. The second harmonic of YAG:Nd laser was used as a source of light. Before irradiation the SiO2 layer with thickness 0.75 μm had red color in reflecting light due to the interference. After irradiation with the laser with intensity of more than 3.5 MW/cm2 red color changed to yellow. However, samples with thickness 0.21 μm did not change color after irradiation. The model for the annealing of a radiation-induced point defect in silica, the ${\text{E}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ center, is identified in the temperature range $(150--550)\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\text{C}$. Thermal treatments in controlled atmospheres of water vapor, oxygen, or helium of irradiated amorphous silicon dioxide are carried out. Direct experimental evidences that the annealing of the ${\text{E}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ center is caused by a reaction with diffusing water molecules are found. Dielectric properties of reactor irradiated ferroelectric thin films

Abstract Radiation effects in highly oriented Pb1Zr0.53Ti0.47O3 (PZT), Pb0.94La0.06Zr0.65Ti0.35O3 (PLZT-6), and PbiZriO3 (PZ) ferroelectric (FE) and antiferroelectric (AF) thin films are investigated in view of their possible application as a temperature sensitive element in a new bolometer system for ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor). The dielectric properties (i.e. hysteresis loops, dielectric constants) of the films were investigated in a frequency range from 20 to 105 Hz and at temperatures up to 450 °C, before and after neutron irradiation to a neutron fluence of 5×1021 m−2 (E<0.1 MeV).
