The assessment of multicultural strength: Design and validation of an Openness to the Other Affective Domain Inventory

2014

The classification of character strengths and virtues by Peterson and Seligman (2004) includes 24 strengths and 6 virtues. Although the development of this classification was inspired by diverse cultural traditions, no one strength or virtue centrally focused on cultural aspects. Fowers and Davidov (2006) have proposed a new multicultural strength or virtue termed as openness to the other. We developed the Openness to the Other Affective Domain Inventory (OADI), a new 6-item measurement instrument to assess affective attraction to the other, that is, fascination with or attraction to culturally diverse others, and affective aversion to the other, that is, distrust of or disgust with cultura…

Emotion rating from short blog texts

2008

Being able to automatically perceive a variety of emotions from text alone has potentially important applications in CMC and HCI that range from identifying mood from online posts to enabling dynamically adaptive interfaces. However, such ability has not been proven in human raters or computational systems. Here we examine the ability of naive raters of emotion to detect one of eight emotional categories from 50 and 200 word samples of real blog text. Using expert raters as a 'gold standard', naive-expert rater agreement increased with longer texts, and was high for ratings of joy, disgust, anger and anticipation, but low for acceptance and 'neutral' texts. We discuss these findings in ligh…

2010

Iron incorporated into food systems induces oxidation and precipitation. The consequences are a reduced bioavailability and a modification of other food flavor. The iron chelates such as Fe-bisglycinate and Fe-EDTA represent a possibility to avoid side effects, since the iron is protected. The inertety of Fe bisglycinate and NaFe EDTA for lipid peroxidation has been verified in oil-in-water emulsion models stabilized by sodium caseinate or by β lactoglobulin through the following studies: i/ increase of primary and secondary products of oxidation, ii/ change of the properties of the oil/water interface (tension and interfacial rheology), iii/ the stability of the chelate iron (Fe-bisglycina…

The Profiles of Body Image Associate With Changes in Depression Among Participants in Dance Movement Therapy Group

2020

This mixed-methods study analyzed the body image quality of 143 patients with depression. The participants received a 20 × 75 min dance movement therapy (DMT) group treatment, sessions twice a week. Body Image Assessment (BIA) was the data collection tool, with pre-, post-, and 3-mos follow-up assessments. Pre-intervention body image quality characteristics were low energy and activity levels, discomfort, shame and disgust toward the body, tension in social interactions. On the BIA scores, a statistical method of Latent Profile Analysis was utilized to identify participant profiles in the data. The two identified profiles were participant with initial negative body image and participant wit…

Emotion recognition changes in a confinement situation due to COVID-19

2020

Abstract The confinement situation experienced as a result of COVID-19 will have consequences at a psychological level. These consequences can affect emotion recognition because, due to isolation, interactions and social contacts have been drastically reduced. The aim of this study was to find out if there were differences in facial emotion recognition in two groups of young adults, one confined during COVID-19 and the other unconfined. One hundred and sixty-four young adults were tested twice, the first time unconfined, to obtain the baseline, then the sample was divided into two subgroups so that 84 were evaluated in a confined situation and 80 in an unconfined situation. . Disguised Employment - The Nature of Forced Entrepreneurship

2007

Present labor markets are in the wind of change. A widely made distinction between employees and individual contractors has been challenged. The study discusses abductively, i.e. both conceptually and empirically, the nature of being a responsible employer. Consequently, the two central concepts are: a) responsibility and b) employment relationship. The empirical research task is: Why does disguised employment exist? Question of the research is: What is disguised employment as forced entrepreneurship? The approach is qualitative and abductive, which in this case means a two-way dialogue between the findings gained from literature and interviews. For this exploration, twelve open and unstruc…
