The present article focuses on Polish motifs in Sofya Kovalevskaya’s recollections. Kovalevskaya was a great 19th century Russian mathematician whose contributions were acknowledged throughout Europę during her lifetime. She was the first European woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Gottingen, a professor at Stockholm University in Sweden, and the first female corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Besides her scientific activities, Kovalevskaya was also a writer and publicist. She is the author of a number of novels, poems, a play and autobiographical Recollections of Childhood. Habitat area and local habitat conditions outweigh fragmentation effects on insect communities in vineyards

Fragmentation of habitat, for example by intensive agricultural practices, can be detrimental to local biodiversity. However, it often remains unclear whether such biodiversity declines are caused by loss of habitat area or increased fragmentation, and how habitat quality factors into it. In our study system, vegetated vineyards are typically small, and isolated from one another, potentially limiting the distribution and dispersal of organisms. The incidence of multiple pregnancy has increased, particularly because of the advances in assisted reproductive technologies. Multiple gestations are high risk pregnancies, especially the monochorionic ones. Two/thirds of initially twin pregnancies result in singles at birth, a condition defined as vanishing twin syndrome. The intrauterine death of one of the twins can cause direct fetal damage to the surviving one on several levels. The paper describes the case of a child born from twin pregnancy that was interrupted for one of the co-twins at early second trimester of gestation who presented with aplasia cutis congenita.

The article is a tentative analysis of the word-forming potential for Polish not only onomatopoeic verbs. As the input material for analysis, the author selected 84 word-forming nests of verbs, taken from Słownik gniazd słowotwórczych współczesnego języka ogólnopolskiego (Kraków 2004). The selected verbs are the base for nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs. The derived nouns and verbs were divided into 23 semantic classes. Helsingissä työskentelevät poliisit kohtaavat työssään yhä useammin tilanteita, joissa vaaditaan englannin kielen taitoa. Poliisien kielitaito on aihe, jota ei ole tutkittu paljon; viimeisin tutkimus lienee vuodelta 1994. Näin ollen tämä tutkimus tuo arvokasta tietoa poliisien englannin taidoista.
