Abstract A highly sensitive method was developed for determination of bismuth in milk shakes by multicommutation hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) based on off-line sonication for 10 min with aqua regia 8% (v/v) and on-line waste treatment. The instrumentation and chemistry variables were studied in order to provide the best performance. The limit of detection in the original samples, established for a probability level of 99.6% (k = 3), was 1.67 ng/g Bi. The method provides a fast alternative in control analysis with a sampling throughput of 72 h as compared with 31 h obtained by the classical continuous measurement. Experimental and Theoretical Study of Bi2O2Se Under Compression

[EN] We report a joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural, vibrational, elastic, optical, and electronic properties of the layered high-mobility semiconductor Bi2O2Se at high pressure. A good agreement between experiments and ab initio calculations is observed for the equation of state, the pressure coefficients of the Raman-active modes and the bandgap of the material. In particular, a detailed description of the vibrational properties is provided. Quantum size effects in solitary wires of bismuth

We have performed four-probe electrical transport measurements on solitary highly crystalline wires of semimetallic bismuth with aspect ratios up to 60 at room and at cryogenic temperatures. By proper choice of the substrate material and the film deposition parameters, lithographic wires with lateral dimensions of down to one single grain, $\sim 250$ nm, were fabricated. The electrical resistance of each wire was measured against its thickness through successive reactive ion etching of the self-same wire. Thermo-Optical Investigation of Sodium-Bismuth Titanate Single Crystal and PLZT Ceramics

Thermal lensing in relaxor type ferroelectrics as a function of temperature has been investigated by using pulse/probe method. Enhanced thermo-optical (TO) properties had been observed in 3d elements (Cu, Co) doped PLZT ceramics and in sodium-bismuth titanate single crystals near phase transitions (PT). Comparison of TO signals for several doped PLZT materials reveals that 0.5 wt.% Cu doping is responsible for improved thermal lensing parameters interpreted by optimal light absorption, heat transfer and possible PT adjustment. Investigations of Low Temperature Phase Transitions in BiFeO3Ceramic by Infrared Spectroscopy

In this paper, results of new infrared FIR-MIR measurements (wavenumber range of 4000–100 cm−1) in the range of the temperature 300 ÷ 8 K of the BiFeO3 ceramic are presented. Below 200 K only one symmetric band at ca. 800 cm−1 is visible. The full width at half maximum of this band decreases exponentially on cooling. The shape of the band at ca. 545 cm−1connected with A1 (TO) mode also changes between 60–40 K, this is in the vicinity of the phase transition at 50 K. Initially a broad band reveals its components as shoulder bands. Theirs FWHM decrease with cooling.

Studies on the mechanism of photosystem II photoinhibition II. The involvement of toxic oxygen species.

In a previous paper it was shown that photoinhibition of reaction centre II of spinach thylakoids was predominantly caused by the degradation of D1-protein. An initial inactivation step at the QB-site was distinguished from its breakdown. The present paper deals with the question as to whether this loss of QB-function is caused by oxygen radical attack. For this purpose the photoinhibition of thylakoids was induced at 20°C in the presence of either superoxide dismutase and catalase or the antioxidants glutathione and ascorbic acid. Low-dimensional non-toxic A 3 Bi 2 X 9 compounds synthesized by a dry mechanochemical route with tunable visible photoluminescence at room temperature

We have synthesized fifteen inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic non-toxic A3Bi2X9 compounds (A = K+, Rb+, Cs+, CH3NH3+ and HC(NH2)2+; X = I−, Br−, Cl−) through dry mechanochemistry. We demonstrate that this synthetic method is very well suited to prepare compounds from poorly soluble precursors, allowing thus the preparation of so far unreported compounds. X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrates the high crystallinity of the so-formed ternary bismuth halides. Furthermore, we show that, through substitution of the A-cation and X-anion, the bandgap of these compounds can be tuned to absorb throughout the whole visible spectrum. Impact of fluorine admixture, hydrogen loading, and exposure to ArF excimer laser on photoluminescence of bismuth defects in amorphous silica

Abstract Photoluminescence (PL) excited by ArF (193 nm), KrF (248 nm) and N 2 (337 nm) pulsed lasers is studied in bismuth doped unfused silicon dioxide synthesized on silica substrates by surface-plasma chemical vapor deposition (SPCVD). Additive free and fluorinated (F content ~ 0.4 wt.%) amorphous silica are examined as host materials for bismuth. Three typical PL bands peaking at wavelengths of 650 nm (orange), 800 nm and 1400 nm (near infrared, NIR) were observed. It is found that fluorine additive weakly affects PL detail of as deposited samples. Intra-center and recombination luminescence of bismuth defects in fused and unfused amorphous silica fabricated by SPCVD

Abstract Photoluminescence (PL) of bismuth doped silicon dioxide excited by UV excimer lasers (ArF — 193 nm, KrF — 248 nm) and a green light laser diode (532 nm) is studied in a wide spectral band at temperatures ranging from 12 to 750 K. Two types of samples are investigated: unfused, 100 μm in thickness amorphous layer immediately deposited on the inner surface of silica substrate tube, and the same material after profusion resulted from tube collapsing to a rod by external heating.
