Dominant vs. nondominant arm advantage in mentally simulated actions in right handers

2013

Although plentiful data are available regarding mental states involving the dominant-right arm, the evidence for the nondominant-left arm is sparse. Here, we investigated whether right-handers can generate accurate predictions with either the right or the left arm. Fifteen adults carried out actual and mental arm movements in two directions with varying inertial resistance (inertial anisotropy phenomenon). We recorded actual and mental movement times and used the degree of their similarity as an indicator for the accuracy of motor imagery/prediction process. We found timing correspondences (isochrony) between actual and mental right arm movements in both rightward (low inertia resistance) …

Mentally represented motor actions in normal aging: III. Electromyographic features of imagined arm movements.

2009

Abstract Motor imagery is a cognitive process during which subjects mentally simulate movements without actually performing them. Here, we investigated the temporal and electromyographic (EMG) features of imagined arm movements in healthy elderly adults. Twelve young (mean age: 24.0 ± 1.3 years) and 12 elderly (mean age: 67.0 ± 4.5 years) participants executed and mentally simulated, with their right and left arms and as fast and as accurately as possible, arm pointing movements between three targets located in the frontal plane. We used the mental chronometry paradigm as an indicator of the accuracy of the motor imagery process (i.e. isochrony between executed and imagined movements) and t…

The relationship between animal cruelty in children and adolescent and interpersonal violence: A systematic review

2019

Abstract The following study is a systematic review of the relationship between animal cruelty and interpersonal violence. The systematic literature review following PRISMA guidelines and combined with the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, enabled us to locate 32 studies published between 1995 and July 2017. Overall, the results show that episodes of animal cruelty during childhood and adolescence tend to co-occur alongside other forms of violent and antisocial behaviors. Cruelty to animals was associated with bullying, behavioral problems, experiences of abuse (emotional, physical and sexual), and juvenile delinquency. Furthermore, recurrent animal cruelty during childhood a…

Polyketides from the marine-derived fungus Aspergillus falconensis: In silico and in vitro cytotoxicity studies.

2020

Abstract Fermentation of the marine-derived fungus Aspergillus falconensis, isolated from sediment collected from the Red Sea, Egypt on solid rice medium containing 3.5% NaCl yielded a new dibenzoxepin derivative (1) and a new natural isocoumarin (2) along with six known compounds (3–8). Changes in the metabolic profile of the fungus were induced by replacing NaCl with 3.5% (NH4)2SO4 that resulted in the accumulation of three further known compounds (9–11), which were not detected when the fungus was cultivated in the presence of NaCl. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by HRESIMS and 1D/2D NMR as well as by comparison with the literature. Molecular docking was conducted fo…

HC-SCR of NOx over Ag/alumina: a combination of heterogeneous and homogeneous radical reactions?

2005

Matrix isolation combined with EPR and FT-IR technique at low temperature has been used to study the gas phase species involved in HC-SCR over a highly active Ag/alumina catalyst. A combination of heterogeneous and homogeneous (radical) reactions is proposed to take place over a Ag/alumina catalyst during HC-SCR. Radicals of low molecular weight were trapped in a growing argon matrix behind the Ag/alumina catalyst. In the same matrix, cyanogen isocyanate was detected and is suggested to be a key intermediate for the formation of amines and ammonia via the hydrolysis of isocyanate species.

Relations between compression and thermal contraction in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene and melting of trichlorobenzene isomers

2015

The compression and thermal expansion of crystalline 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, C6H3Cl3, 124TCB, investigated under isobaric and isothermal conditions, are in reverse relation, as for most of crystals, however, the isochoric strain along direction c is clearly different from those along a and b. Single crystals of 124TCB have been in situ grown under isochoric and isobaric conditions, at 270 K/0.1 MPa and 295 K/0.16 GPa, and also at 100 K/0.1 MPa and 295 K/0.64 GPa, when the unit-cell volume is similar. All crystallizations yielded the same phase, of monoclinic space group P21/n, with two symmetry-independent molecules (Z′ = 2). The structure is governed by Cl⋯Cl and Cl⋯H interactions and the …

Mechanistic Study of Stepwise Methylisocyanide Coupling and C-H Activation Mediated by a Low-Valent Main Group Molecule

2013

An experimental and DFT investigation of the mechanism of the coupling of methylisocyanide and C-H activation mediated by the germylene (germanediyl) Ge(Ar(Me6))2 (Ar(Me6) = C6H3-2,6(C6H2-2,4,6-Me3)2) showed that it proceeded by initial MeNC adduct formation followed by an isomerization involving the migratory insertion of the MeNC carbon into the Ge-C ligand bond. Addition of excess MeNC led to sequential insertions of two further MeNC molecules into the Ge-C bond. The insertion of the third MeNC leads to methylisocyanide methyl group C-H activation to afford an azagermacyclopentadienyl species. The X-ray crystal structures of the 1:1 (Ar(Me6))2GeCNMe adduct, the first and final insertion …

Tautomerism and the Protonation/Deprotonation of Isocytosine in Liquid- and Solid-States Studied by NMR Spectroscopy and Theoretical Calculations

2011

Isocytosine crystallizes as a 1:1 ratio of two tautomers in a manner similar to that of the guanine and cytosine pairs in DNA. The solid-state NMR chemical shifts of crystalline neutral isocytosine, the sodium salt of isocytosine, and those of isocytosine hydrochloride were measured and related to the NMR parameters in aqueous and organic solutions. The experimental chemical shifts were compared with those calculated by three different methods: (1) calculations on isolated molecules, (2) calculations on isocytosine clusters of various sizes, and (3) infinite crystal calculations, that is, the gauge-including projector-augmented wave (GIPAW) method. The data obtained with the GIPAW method we…
