Association of erythrocyte deformability with red blood cell distribution width in metabolic diseases and thalassemia trait.

2016

Abstract Increased red blood distribution width (RDW) in anemia is related to disturbances in the cellular surface/volume ratio, usually accompanied by morphological alterations, while it has been shown in inflammatory diseases that the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines disturbing erythropoiesis increases RDW. Recently it has been reported that higher RDW is related with decreased erythrocyte deformability, and that it could be related with the association of RDW and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. In order to analyze the influence of morphological alterations and proinflammatory status on the relationship between RDW and erythrocyte deformability, we analyzed erythrocyte de…

Red blood cell distribution width: A simple parameter with multiple clinical applications

2014

The red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a simple and inexpensive parameter, which reflects the degree of heterogeneity of erythrocyte volume (conventionally known as anisocytosis), and is traditionally used in laboratory hematology for differential diagnosis of anemias. Nonetheless, recent evidence attests that anisocytosis is commonplace in human disorders such as cardiovascular disease, venous thromboembolism, cancer, diabetes, community-acquired pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, liver and kidney failure, as well as in other acute or chronic conditions. Despite some demographic and analytical issues related to the routine assessment that may impair its clinical usef…

The European Unemployment Benefit Scheme: Legal Basis for Resocialising Europe

2017

Approaches to model the retention and peak profile in linear gradient reversed-phase liquid chromatography.

2012

Abstract The optimisation of the experimental conditions in gradient reversed-phase liquid chromatography requires reliable algorithms for the description of the retention and peak profile. As in isocratic elution, the linear relationship between the logarithm of the retention factor and the solvent contents is only acceptable in relatively small concentration ranges of modifier. However, more complex models may not allow an analytical integration of the general equation for gradient elution. Alternative approaches for modelling the retention in linear gradient elution are here proposed. Those based on the quadratic logarithmic model and a model proposed for normal liquid chromatography yie…

Comparison of conventional hamstring/quadriceps ratio between genders in level-matched soccer players

2017

Abstract Objectives: The main goal of our study is to compare the hamstring/quadriceps (H/Q) ratio at different knee angles between level-matched male and female soccer players and to determine whether differences in the H/Q ratio exist between the dominant and the non-dominant leg. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used to compare an isometric H/Q ratio and functional isokinetic ratio (between hamstring in eccentric contraction and quadriceps in concentric contraction) between males (n = 14) and females (n = 14). These ratios were studied at two different speeds of movement (60° s−1 and 180° s−1) and in five different positions (40°, 50°, 60°, 70° and 80° degrees of knee flexion)…

Tetrasomy 18p de novo: Identification by FISH with conventional and microdissection probes and analysis of parental origin and formation by short seq…

1996

We report a de novo supernumerary isochromosome 18p in a child with tetrasomy 18p, analyzed by a straightforward combination of cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic methods. The diagnostic procedure consisted of standard banding techniques and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with centromere and library DNA probes for chromosome 18, and 18p-specific FISH probes prepared by chromosome microdissection and in vitro amplification. The maternal origin as well as the most probable cell stages of formation of the supernumerary isochromosome were determined by typing of short sequence repeats (SSRs). The pattern of allelic distribution suggests a nondisjunction during meiosis followed by …

Assessing the genetic diversity ofCentaurea parlatorisgroup (sect.Dissectae, Compositae) in Sicily using isozymes

2011

Abstract The Centaurea parlatoris group belongs to sect. Dissectae and is one of the most taxonomically critical groups in Sicily. The taxa included in it inhabit dry slopes, pastures and rocky places. Some of them are narrow endemics to Sicily, and others to Italy. The great morphological variability at the intrapopulation level has not permitted the creation of an adequate taxonomic scheme. The recent proposal of two new species from Sicily confirms the insufficient knowledge of the taxonomic diversity. This study involves eight Sicilian populations of the C. parlatoris group. Seven loci from nine enzyme systems [isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), 6-phosphoglucona…

D-2-hydroxyglutarate produced by mutant IDH2 causes cardiomyopathy and neurodegeneration in mice.

2014

Mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 and 2 (IDH1/2) have been discovered in several cancer types and cause the neurometabolic syndrome D2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria (D2HGA). The mutant enzymes exhibit neomorphic activity resulting in production of D2-hydroxyglutaric acid (D-2HG). To study the pathophysiological consequences of the accumulation of D-2HG, we generated transgenic mice with conditionally activated IDH2R140Q and IDH2R172K alleles. Global induction of mutant IDH2 expression in adults resulted in dilated cardiomyopathy, white matter abnormalities throughout the central nervous system (CNS), and muscular dystrophy. Embryonic activation of mutant IDH2 resulted in more pronounced ph…
