Geochemical characteristics of Cretaceous carbonatites from Angola

1999

Abstract The Early Cretaceous (138–130 Ma) carbonatites and associated alkaline rocks of Angola belong to the Parana-Angola-Etendeka Province and occur as ring complexes and other central-type intrusions along northeast trending tectonic lineaments, parallel to the trend of coeval Namibian alkaline complexes. Most of the Angolan carbonatite-alkaline bodies are located along the apical part of the Mocamedes Arch, a structure representing the African counterpart of the Ponta Grossa Arch in southern Brazil, where several alkaline-carbonatite complexes were also emplaced in the Early Cretaceous. Geochemical and isotopic (C, 0, Sr and Nd) characteristics determined for five carbonatitic occurren…

Dual Labeling of Lipopolysaccharides for SPECT-CT Imaging and Fluorescence Microscopy.

2013

International audience; : Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) or endotoxins are amphipathic, pro-inflammatory components of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. In the host, LPS can trigger a systemic inflammatory response syndrome. To bring insight into in vivo tissue distribution and cellular uptake of LPS, dual labeling was performed with a bimodal molecular probe designed for fluorescence and nuclear imaging. LPS were labeled with DOTA-Bodipy-NCS, and pro-inflammatory properties were controlled after each labeling step. LPS were then radiolabeled with (111)In and subsequently injected intravenously into wild-type, C57B16 mice, and their in vivo behavior was followed by single photon emis…

Gamma activity and geochemical features of building materials: estimation of gamma dose rate and indoor radon levels in Sicily.

2001

A high-purity germanium detector has been used to measure the abundance of radium (Ra), thorium (Th) and potassium (K) in building materials used in Sicilian dwellings. The measurements were performed to evaluate which material was suitable for the construction of an enclosure, which would have a low background emission. The materials examined in this work showed concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K dramatically variable depending on the lithologies, particularly in the case of blocks, sands and aggregates commonly used in building materials in Sicily. The results are discussed and a criterion is indicated to reduce the radiation dose to humans. Since radon inlet is a major health problem…

Helium-3 imaging of pulmonary ventilation.

1998

In the first studies in humans, the 3He gas was Helium is an inert, non-radioactive, noble gas. directly inhaled from the glass cell or via a mouth 3He is a rare isotope with a nuclear spin c. As it tip or plastic bag [2, 3]. The estimated inhaled is derived from tritium decay, it is quite expensive. volume in our studies was 400–500 ml. Recently, Non-polarized 3He costs 100–150 US$. Advanwe developed a computer-assisted application tages for applications in humans are: negligible system which is compatible with spontaneous solubility in water or blood, no adverse effects — breathing, assisted or mechanical ventilation. The widely used in deep-sea diving (80% He, 20% lungs can be flushed wi…

Functional MRI of the lung using hyperpolarized 3-helium gas

2004

Lung imaging has traditionally relied on x-ray methods, since proton MRI is limited to some extent by low proton density in the lung parenchyma and static field inhomogeneities in the chest. The relatively recent introduction of MRI of hyperpolarized noble gases has led to a rapidly evolving field of pulmonary MRI, revealing functional information of the lungs, which were hitherto unattainable. This review article briefly describes the physical background of the technology, and subsequently focuses on its clinical applications. Four different techniques that have been used in various human investigations are discussed: ventilation distribution, ventilation dynamics, and small airway evaluat…

Hyperpolarized 3helium gas as a novel contrast agent for functional MRI of ventilation.

2002

The use of inhaled hyperpolarized 3He gas in MRI is a recent approach for ventilation imaging. It has recently received enormous interest since it is capable of producing new and regional information on normal and abnormal lung ventilation. Promising preclinical and preliminary clinical results are the driving force to start phase II trials with patients suffering from obstructive and restrictive lung diseases.

The synthesis of SNAT2 transporters is required for the hypertonic stimulation of system A transport activity

2004

AbstractIn cultured human fibroblasts incubated under hypertonic conditions, the stimulation of system A for neutral amino acid transport, associated to the increased expression of the mRNA for SNAT2 transporter, leads to an expanded intracellular amino acid pool and to the recovery of cell volume. A protein of nearly 60 kDa, recognized by an antiserum against SNAT2, is increased both in the pool of biotinylated membrane proteins and in the total cell lysate of hypertonically stressed cells. The increased level of SNAT2 transporters in hypertonically stressed cells is confirmed by immunocytochemistry. DRB, an inhibitor of transcription, substantially inhibits the increase of SNAT2 proteins …

Calcium Carbonate and Phosphate Reference Materials for Monitoring Bulk and Microanalytical Determination of Sr Isotopes

2017

In situ laser ablation analyses rely on the microanalytical homogeneity of reference materials (RMs) and a similar matrix and mass fraction between unknown samples and RMs to obtain reliable results. Suitable carbonate and phosphate RMs for determination of Sr isotope ratios in such materials are limited. Thus, we determined Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios of several carbonate (JCt-1, JCp-1, MACS-1, MACS-3) and phosphate (MAPS-4, MAPS-5, NIST SRM 1400, NIST SRM 1486) international RMs using dissolved samples and two different multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometers (MC-ICP-MS). Our Sr isotope data are in agreement with published data and have an improved measurement precision for s…

Initial results of NEXT-DEMO, a large-scale prototype of the NEXT-100 experiment

2013

NEXT-DEMO is a large-scale prototype of the NEXT-100 detector, an electroluminescent time projection chamber that will search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Xe-136 using 100-150 kg of enriched xenon gas. NEXT-DEMO was built to prove the expected performance of NEXT-100, namely, energy resolution better than 1% FWHM at 2.5MeV and event topological reconstruction. In this paper we describe the prototype and its initial results. A resolution of 1.75% FWHM at 511 keV (which extrapolates to 0.8% FWHM at 2.5 MeV) was obtained at 10 bar pressure using a gamma-ray calibration source. Also, a basic study of the event topology along the longitudinal coordinate is presented, proving that it…

Dynamics and identification of soil microbial populations actively assimilating carbon from 13C-labelled wheat residue as estimated by DNA- and RNA-S…

2007

International audience; This work is the first report on the use of DNA-, RNA-SIP approaches to elucidate the dynamics and the diversity of bacterial populations actively assimilating C derived from plant residues labelled at more than 90% (13)C. Wheat-residues, were incorporated and incubated into soil microcosms for 28 days. At the end of the incubation time, no more than 55% of the total CO(2) released was (13)C-labelled, suggesting the occurrence of an important priming effect process. After 7 days, more than 30% of the whole DNA extracted were labelled, allowing an efficient separation of labelled from unlabelled DNA using density gradient centrifugation. The genetic structure of bacte…
