Quadrupole interaction of $^{8}$Li and $^{9}$Li in LiNbO$_{3}$ and the quadrupole moment of $^{9}$Li

1988

The quadrupole interaction of nuclear spin polarized8Li (I=2) and9Li (I=3/2) in LiNbO3 has been studied at room temperature. The polarization was achieved by optical pumping of a fast atomic beam with circularly polarized laser light. The atoms were implanted into a hexagonal LiNbO3 single crystal and the quadrupole splitting ofβ-NMR spectra was measured. A ratio of ¦Q(9Li)/Q(8Li)¦=0.88(4) for the nuclear quadrupole moments was deduced, yielding a new value of ¦Q(9Li)¦=25.3 (9) mb for the quadrupole moment of9Li.

Isomer separation of Cu and Cu with a resonance ionization laser ion source

2000

Abstract Radioactive copper isotopes were ionized with the resonance ionization laser ion source (RILIS) at the on-line isotope separator ISOLDE (CERN). Using the different hyperfine structure in the 3d10 4s  2 S1/2 – 3d10 4p  2 P01/2 transition the low- and high-spin isomers of 70 Cu were selectively enhanced by tuning the laser wavelength. The light was provided by a narrow-bandwidth dye laser pumped by copper vapor lasers (CVL) and frequency doubled in a BBO crystal. The ground state to isomeric state intensity ratio could be varied by a factor of 30, allowing to assign gamma transitions unambiguously to the decay of the individual isomers. It is shown that the method can also be used to…

Changes in nuclear structure along the Mn isotopic chain studied via charge radii

2016

The hyperfine spectra of $^{51,53-64}$Mn were measured in two experimental runs using collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE, CERN. Laser spectroscopy was performed on the atomic $3d^5\ 4s^2\ ^{6}\text{S}_{5/2}\rightarrow 3d^5\ 4s4p\ ^{6}\text{P}_{3/2}$ and ionic $3d^5\ 4s\ ^{5}\text{S}_2 \rightarrow 3d^5\ 4p\ ^{5}\text{P}_3$ transitions, yielding two sets of isotope shifts. The mass and field shift factors for both transitions have been calculated in the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock framework and were combined with a King plot analysis in order to obtain a consistent set of mean-square charge radii which, together with earlier work on neutron-deficient Mn, allow the study of nuclear struc…

Production of neutron-rich surface-ionized nuclides at PARRNe

2002

Yields of neutron-rich isotopes produced by fast neutron induced fission of 238 U were measured at the ISOL set-up Production dAtomes Radioactifs Riches en Neutrons. A surface ion source was used to ionize selectively elements with low ionization potentials. In order to observe also the most n-rich isotopes, the identification was achieved by a combined measurement of b- and c-rays and b-delayed neutrons. The flux of fast neutrons inducing fission was generated by a 1 lA beam of 26 MeV deuterons stopped in a graphite converter. The target was a standard ISOLDE type 238 UC

Optical polarization of neutron-rich sodium isotopes and β-NMR measurements of quadrupole moments

1996

The nuclear quadrupole moments of neutron-rich sodium isotopes are being investigated with the help of in-beam polarization by optical pumping in combination with $\beta$-NMR techniques. First measurements have yielded the quadrupole splittings of NMR signals in the lattice of LiNbO$_{3}$ for the isotopes $^{26}$Na, $^{27}$Na and $^{28}$Na. Interaction constants and ratios of the electric quadrupole moments are derived. In view of future experiments, $\beta$-decay asymmetries for the sequence of isotopes up to the $N$=20 neutron shell closure, $^{26-31}$Na, have been measured.

On-line yields obtained with the ISOLDE RILIS

2003

The ISOLDE resonance ionization laser ion source (RILIS) allows to ionize efficiently and selectively many metallic elements. In recent yield surveys and on-line experiments with the ISOLDE RILIS we observed 23–34 Mg, 26–34 Al, 98–132 Cd, 149 Tb, 155–177 Yb, 179–200 Tl, 183–215 Pb and 188–218 Bi. The obtained yields are presented together with measured release parameters which allow to extrapolate the release efficiency towards more exotic (short-lived) nuclides of the same elements. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Reactions of40Ar with233U,235U, and238U at the barrier

1990

Production cross sections for target-like transfer products in reactions of40Ar with233,235,238U at the barrier were determined using radiochemical techniques. The heaviest products detected are isotopes of californium (Z=98). In addition to the quasi-elastic component of the isotopic distributions observed in the vicinity of uranium, there are also relaxed contributions throughout the entire region. The peak positions of the isotope distributions of this component for fixed atomic number, after the transfer of > 3 charges, approach closely the minimum of the potential energy surfaces (PES). The experimental results thus indicate the cold formation of the reaction products. A search for lon…

Optical spectroscopy using mass-separated beams: Nuclear properties of unstable indium and tin isotopes

1987

Abstract Collinear fast-beam laser-spectroscopy has been used to measure the hyperfine structure and isotope shift of several indium and tin isotopes. The related experimental techniques are described, including the preparation of mass-separated beams of neutron-deficient indium and tin isotopes at the GSI on-line mass separator following fusion-evaporation reactions. The deviation of the observed dependence of the charge radii upon the neutron number from the expected behaviour is briefly discussed.
