The Influence of Religion on Life Satisfaction in Italy

2021

Italy is the cradle of Catholicism and, despite the secularization process, religion continues to be part of its national culture. Although Italian sociologists have investigated the religious paradigm in Italy, there are aspects of such phenomenon still little explored. This paper examines the potential influence religion has on individuals’ life satisfaction. Data from the European Value Study survey provides evidence of a two-way interaction between religion and life satisfaction, with a substantial effect only in the case of public religious forms. This association seems to be moved by the mechanism of social support, and it differs across Italian regions. Results confirm the hypothesis…

Social Work with Refugees and Migrants in Italy

2021

Social Work in Italy has been tackling the internal migration phenomenon since the post-WW II period, when more than 1,300,000 Italian citizens from poor southern regions, where employment was scarce, moved to the center and to the industrialized north of Italy (Simone 2016). Since then, and as early as the late 1980s, social workers have had to deal with flows of migrants and refugees from other countries. Faced with the growing commitment of Social Work to the field of migration, the professional community has been called to reassess both the training of social workers and the updating of methodology and functions, especially with regard to the adaptation of professional work and ser- vic…

Neighbourhood effects and determinants of population changes in Italy: a spatial perspective

2023

Population trends in Italy are strongly spatially differentiated, with some munic- ipalities showing a systematic loss of population, and others showing an equally continuous demographic increase. Here, we focus our attention on the spatial dimension of population change, looking at how different socio-economic and demographic dimensions affect population changes, as well as their spatial effects. After performing a preliminary descriptive analysis of the trends of population growth and decline in Italy over the last 40 years and the relevant demographic components, we used a spatial Durbin model (SDM) to investigate the potential existence of a diffusion process and the determinants of the…

The management of migrants' emergency in Sicily (Italy), between suspension of rights and controversies of planning

2015

The attention of the media and international news is addressed to the migration issues, just during the landings of illegal migrants, and especially when these landings are linked to the deaths of migrants. However, for nearly thirty years, Sicily, among the Southern European regions most affected by the phenomenon of migration flows, has assumed the role of “gate” which introduces to Europe from Africa, making a bridge among nearest worlds, but often extremely different. This condition is, in fact, a historical value, given that Sicily has always been the crossroads of migration flows among Mediterranean Europe, Asia and Africa which allowed the exchange among cultures, ethnicities and rel…

Production and Efficiency in 21 Industrialized Countries from 1966 to 2007 to Analyse the Italy’s Decline: Application of a Stochastic Frontier Model…

2008

This paper uses a stochastic frontier production model to estimate the technical efficiency of 21 nations among the more industrialized countries in the world for the wide period from 1966 to 2007. A Cobb-Douglas with labour and capital as inputs, GDP as output and efficiency with exponential distribution appears to work good from a statistical point of view. This model is used to estimate in a bayesian approach the efficiency score of these 21 countries. The bayesian way, applied via Gibbs sampling, is here useful to avoid problems about the small number of observations. So, each efficiency score is obtained as mean of 10,000 draws. The results underline a general and progressive efficienc…

Local and territorial determinants in the realization of public–private–partnerships: an empirical analysis for Italian provinces

2019

ABSTRACT Relational networks and intangible factors are crucial elements for the competitiveness of a territory. Public–Private–Partnerships (PPPs), in particular, allow for the provision of goods and services that favour the exploitation of complementarities between public and private resources. They aim at promoting an increase in the overall efficiency of investment projects through a complex mechanism that distributes risk and revenues among stakeholders. This paper examines the local and territorial determinants of PPPs through an econometric analysis based upon Italian municipal data, grouped at the provincial level. Using a tobit model, we analyse the relationship between the realiza…

The (im)possible success of disadvantaged students. Reflections on education, migration and social change

2019

The paper focuses on the ?unexpected pathways? of successful students with an immigrant background: these biographical routes, that seems socially impossible, raise theoretical issues around the individual-society, actor-structure relationship. Disadvantaged students who succeed represent a sociological challenge in the attempt to understand atypical situations and to identify the institutional processes and the structural opportunities that facilitate them, reducing ethnic inequalities in education. This framework is the starting point of the Su.Per. project (Success in educational pathways of students with immigrant background), based on the collection of written autobiographies of 65 imm…
