Visibility in mediated borderscapes : The hunger strike of asylum seekers as an embodiment of border violence

2018

In 2012, two Afghan asylum seekers camped outside the Parliament building in Helsinki during a hunger strike that lasted for 72 days. Although the protest was very visible in the city space, the mainstream media and most politicians ignored it. This paper analyzes the protest and its mediation through the concepts of borderscape and visibility. Using methods of visual and discourse analysis, we examine the ways in which the hunger strike protest – and its mediation – negotiate the (in)visibility of borders. We show how the city can be a site for both policing and for politicizing asylum issues. In particular, we focus on the ways in which protesting asylum seekers embody borders and border …

Baicalin and berberine ultradeformable vesicles as potential adjuvant in vitiligo therapy.

2018

0.5-1% of the world's population is affected by vitiligo, a disease characterized by a gradual depigmentation of the skin. Baicalin and berberine are natural compounds with beneficial activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and proliferative effects. These polyphenols could be useful for the treatment of vitiligo symptoms, and their efficacy can be improved by loading in suitable carriers. The aim of this work was to formulate and characterize baicalin or berberine loaded ultradeformable vesicles, and demonstrate their potential as adjuvants in the treatment of vitiligo. The vesicles were produced using a previously reported simple, scalable method. Their morphology, size distrib…

Enabling a culture for IT services; the role of the IT infrastructure library

2016

Building on process management and service climate theories, this paper investigates the pertinent issues of whether firms that implement ITIL best practices for IT service management will also experience growth in their process management activities and IT service climate. First, ITIL practices imply that processes in the IT department should be managed on a daily basis; without process management, ITIL will fail beyond its initial implementation. Second, two of the main reasons for adopting ITIL are to become a service-oriented organisation and to deliver IT services that meet business needs. Thus, we hypothesise that as the implementation status of ITIL increases, process management and …

Using the ITIL Process Reference Model for Realizing IT Governance: An Empirical Investigation

2014

Information Technology Infrastructure Library ITIL is a popular framework for IT governance, but little academic research on ITIL exists. The authors investigate the overlap between ITIL and IT governance practices to illustrate ITIL's potential to stimulate IT governance. A field study shows that IT implementation success is particularly influenced by group efficacy and organizational resources, and, to a lesser extent, senior-management involvement. Findings show that ITIL, as expected, is a framework that contributes to IT governance by stimulating process management practices.

Emerging drugs for the treatment of vitiligo.

2020

Introduction: Vitiligo is a relatively common autoimmune depigmenting disorder of the skin. There has been a great advance in understanding the pathological basis, which has led to the development and utilization of various new molecules in treating vitiligo. This review aims at a comprehensively describing the treatments available and the emerging treatment aspects and the scope for future developments.Areas covered: This study comprehensively summarizes the current concepts in the pathogenesis of vitiligo with special focus on the cytokine and signaling pathways, which are the targets for newer drugs. JAK kinase signaling pathways and the cytokines involved are the focus of vitiligo treat…

Chronic active hepatitis associated with vitiligo, nail dystrophy, alopecia and a new variant of LKM antibodies

1990

In this report we describe the case of a 7-year-old boy, suffering from autoimmune-type chronic active hepatitis (AI-CAH) associated with vitiligo, nail dystrophy, alopecia areata and a variant of liver kidney microsomal (LKM) autoantibodies. This patient's antibodies are different from LKM-1 which are directed against cytochrome P450 db1. They react predominantly with perivenous hepatocytes in contrast to LKM-1 antibodies which homogeneously stain the whole liver lobule in immunofluorescence. In Western blot analysis this LKM variant reacts with a liver microsomal protein of approx. 50 kDa, but not with recombinant LKM-1 (cytochrome P450 db1) antigen. Immunosuppressive treatment led to a n…
