Basal Forebrain Mediates Motivational Recruitment of Attention by Reward-Associated Cues.

2018

The basal forebrain, composed of distributed nuclei, including substantia innominata (SI), nucleus basalis and nucleus of the diagonal band of Broca plays a crucial neuromodulatory role in the brain. In particular, its projections to the prefrontal cortex have been shown to be important in a wide variety of brain processes and functions, including attention, learning and memory, arousal, and decision-making. In the present study, we asked whether the basal forebrain is involved in recruitment of cognitive effort in response to reward-related cues. This interaction between motivation and cognition is critically impacted in psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia. Using the Designer Rece…

Separation of uncorrelated stationary time series using autocovariance matrices

2014

Blind source separation (BSS) is a signal processing tool, which is widely used in various fields. Examples include biomedical signal separation, brain imaging and economic time series applications. In BSS, one assumes that the observed $p$ time series are linear combinations of $p$ latent uncorrelated weakly stationary time series. The aim is then to find an estimate for an unmixing matrix, which transforms the observed time series back to uncorrelated latent time series. In SOBI (Second Order Blind Identification) joint diagonalization of the covariance matrix and autocovariance matrices with several lags is used to estimate the unmixing matrix. The rows of an unmixing matrix can be deriv…

Biomechanical analysis of different starting strategies utilized during cross-country skiing starts

2016

The present study was designed to analyse and compare the kinetics and kinematics associated with three different starting strategies during classic cross-country ski racing. Inside a ski tunnel, 12 elite male skiers performed three sets of three 38 m starts. Each set included one start using: double poling only (DP), diagonal stride only (DIA) and freely chosen (FREE) (i.e. where subjects used the strategy or combination of strategies they felt was fastest) in random order. The first 18 m was performed on a series of force plates that measured horizontal and vertical forces followed by 20 m of a standard snow track. Additionally, cycle characteristics and joint angles were measured. DIA an…

Diagonal ear lobe crease and atherosclerosis : a review of the medical literature and dental implications

2011

In Spain a significant number of individuals die from atherosclerotic disease of the coronary and carotid arteries without having classic risk factors and prodromal symptoms. The diagonal ear lobe crease (DELC) has been characterized in the medical literature as a surrogate marker which can identify high risk patients having occult atherosclerosis. This topic however has not been examined in either the medical or dental literature emanating from Spain. The majority of clinical, angiography and postmortem reports support the premise that DELC is a valuable extravascular physical sign able to distinguish some patients at risk of succumbing to atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. A minori…

Cardinal invariants of cellular Lindelof spaces

2018

A space X is said to be cellular-Lindelof if for every cellular family $$\mathcal {U}$$ there is a Lindelof subspace L of X which meets every element of $$\mathcal {U}$$ . Cellular-Lindelof spaces generalize both Lindelof spaces and spaces with the countable chain condition. Solving questions of Xuan and Song, we prove that every cellular-Lindelof monotonically normal space is Lindelof and that every cellular-Lindelof space with a regular $$G_\delta $$ -diagonal has cardinality at most $$2^\mathfrak {c}$$ . We also prove that every normal cellular-Lindelof first-countable space has cardinality at most continuum under $$2^{<\mathfrak {c}}=\mathfrak {c}$$ and that every normal cellular-Lindel…

Alternative Diagonality Criteria for SOBI

2015

Blind source separation (BSS) is a multivariate data analysis method, whose roots are in the signal processing community. BSS is applied in diverse fields, including, for example, brain imaging and economic time series analysis. In the BSS model there are interesting latent uncorrelated variables, and the aim is to estimate the latent variables from multiple linear combinations of them. In this article we assume that these variables are weakly stationary time series, and we consider estimation methods which are based on approximate joint diagonalization of autocovariance matrices. In the popular SOBI estimator, a set of matrices is most diagonal when the sum of squares of their diagonal ele…

Neural networks for the diagnostics of gas turbine engines

1996

The paper describes the activities carried out for developing and testing Back Propagation Neural Networks (BPNN) for the gas turbine engine diagnostics. One of the aims of this study was to analyze the problems encountered during training using large number of patterns. Each pattern contains information about the engine thermodynamic behaviour when there is a fault in progress. Moreover the research studied different architectures of BPNN for testing their capability to recognize patterns even when information is noised. The results showed that it is possible to set-up and optimize suitable and robust Neural Networks useful for gas turbine diagnostics. The methods of Gas Path Analysis furn…
