Psicothema

2010

Experimental and numerical evaluation of sandwich composite structures

2004

The main problem working with sandwich composite structures is their intrinsic anisotropy and non-homogeneity that does not allow their correct modelling. Nowadays the available data on mechanical properties of complex structures, necessary to allow a correct and reliable design, are not sufficient. The aim of the present work is to extend the knowledge of mechanical properties both on single components and on complete structures, focusing on the effects induced by different kind of skin arrangements (Kevlar, glass and carbon fibres). Compressive, shear and flexural tests were performed for a complete static mechanical characterisation of the sandwich structure both on each single component…

Influence of the anisotropy of sisal fibers on the mechanical properties of high performance unidirectional biocomposite lamina and micromechanical m…

2021

Abstract High performance biocomposites reinforced by sisal fibers, are between the most promising materials that could be used in various fields, from automotive to civil constructions, thanks to their good mechanical performance, as well as to the low cost and the great availability of the fiber. Nevertheless, at present their practical use is prevented by the limited knowledge of their mechanical performance. The results of the present study have shown that the intimate fibrillar structure of the sisal fiber is associated with a high anisotropy involving not only the elastic parameters, but also the damage processes with typical fiber splitting phenomena, that influence noticeably the bi…

Influence of Ce codoping and H2 pre-loading on Er/Yb-doped fiber: Radiation response characterized by Confocal Micro-Luminescence

2011

International audience; Confocal microscopy luminescence measurements were applied to study the X-ray radiation response of Er/Yb-doped optical fibers in connection with H2 pre-loading and with the addition of another lanthanide element (Cerium) in the core composition. Laser excitations at 488 nm and 325 nm allow deriving the emission and absorption pattern of Er3+, the latter derived from the dips appearing in a wide luminescence band related to defects in silica. We found that the luminescence spectrum of the X-irradiated Er/Yb-doped core fiber evidences an increase in the emission intensity around 520 and 660 nm; in contrast, no changes are induced by radiation neither after H2 pre-load…

Giant subcutaneous lipomatosis in Myoclonic Epilepsy with Ragged Red Fibers syndrome: The first literature report of “laparoscopic” excision

2020

Background MERRF (Myoclonic Epilepsy with Ragged Red Fibers) is a rare multisystem clinical disorder due to a pathogenic variant of the mitochondrial DNA. Rare symptoms of MERRF include multiple systemic lipomatosis with symmetric uncapsulated lipomas occurs generally on the posterior cervical region and upper back. Methods We report the clinical case of a 46 years-old Caucasian man with MERRF syndrome who presented with MSL on the right cervical region. We decided to perform a mini-invasive approach using laparoscopic instruments. We performed a 10-mm incision about 5 cm under the mass and conducted a blunt dissection of the subcutaneous plane. Then we positioned a 10-mm port and started C…

Remote Photoplethysmography for Evaluation of Cutaneous Sensory Nerve Fiber Function

2021

About 2% of the world’s population suffers from small nerve fiber dysfunction, neuropathy, which can result in severe pain. This condition is caused by damage to the small nerve fibers and its assessment is challenging, due to the lack of simple and objective diagnostic techniques. The present study aimed to develop a contactless photoplethysmography system using simple instrumentation, for objective and non-invasive assessment of small cutaneous sensory nerve fiber function. The approach is based on the use of contactless photoplethysmography for the characterization of skin flowmotions and topical heating evoked vasomotor responses. The feasibility of the technique was evaluated on volunt…

Characterizing the Invasive Tumor Front of Aggressive Uterine Adenocarcinoma and Leiomyosarcoma

2021

The invasive tumor front (the tumor–host interface) is vitally important in malignant cell progression and metastasis. Tumor cell interactions with resident and infiltrating host cells and with the surrounding extracellular matrix and secreted factors ultimately determine the fate of the tumor. Herein we focus on the invasive tumor front, making an in-depth characterization of reticular fiber scaffolding, infiltrating immune cells, gene expression, and epigenetic profiles of classified aggressive primary uterine adenocarcinomas (24 patients) and leiomyosarcomas (11 patients). Sections of formalin-fixed samples before and after microdissection were scanned and studied. Reticular fiber archit…

Colocalization but differential regulation of neuronal NO synthase and nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in C2C12 myotubes.

2003

In mammalian skeletal muscle, neuronal-type nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) is found to be enriched at neuromuscular endplates. Here we demonstrate the colocalization of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR, stained with α-bungarotoxin) and nNOS (stained with a specific antibody) in murine C2C12myotubes. However, coimmunoprecipitation experiments demonstrated no evidence for a direct protein-protein association between the nAChR and nNOS in C2C12myotubes. An antibody to the α1-subunit of the nAChR did not coprecipitate nNOS, and an nNOS-specific antibody did not precipitate the α1-subunit of the nAChR. Treatment of mice with bacterial LPS downregulated the expression of nNOS in skeletal…

White Matter Relationships Examined by Transillumination Technique Using a Lateral Transcortical Parietal Approach to the Atrium: Three-Dimensional I…

2019

Background Numerous lesions are found in the ventricular atrium (VA). Access is gained through many white matter tracts with great relevance and specific neurologic functions. It is important to understand the configuration of the most relevant structures surrounding this zone and, thus, select the safest entry zone on the lateral cerebral surface. Objective We studied the white matter layers traversed in the lateral transcortical parietal approach through the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), adding a transillumination technique. With this knowledge, we selected the safest highway to improve this particular approach. Methods An in-depth study of the white matter tracts was performed on 24 cerebr…

Generalization of seizures parallels the formation of "dark" neurons in the hippocampus and pontine reticular formation after focal-cortical applicat…

2008

Abstract Distribution and time course of the occurrence of “dark” neurons were compared with the EEG activity and behavior of rats during 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) induced epileptic seizures. A crystal of the K + channel blocker 4-AP (0.5 mg/kg) was placed onto the exposed parieto-occipital cortex of Halothane-anesthetized rats for 40 min. Thereafter, the anesthesia was discontinued and the behavioral signs of the epileptic seizure activity were observed. The presence of “dark” neurons was demonstrated by the sensitive silver method of Gallyas in rats sacrificed at 0, 3 and 6 h after the end of the 4-AP crystal application. The EEG activity was recorded in the rats with longer survival times. …
