Filling-in Gaps in Textured Images Using Bit-Plane Statistics

2008

In this paper we propose a novel approach for the texture analysis-synthesis problem, with the purpose to restore missing zones in greyscale images. Bit-plane decomposition is used, and a dictionary is build with bit-blocks statistics for each plane. Gaps are reconstructed with a conditional stochastic process, to propagate texture global features into the damaged area, using information stored in the dictionary. Our restoration method is simple, easy and fast, with very good results for a large set of textured images. Results are compared with a state-of-the-art restoration algorithm.

Super-resolution-based magnification of endothelium cells from biomicroscope videos of the cornea

2018

We present a practical, robust, and effective pipeline to compute a high-resolution (HR) image of the corneal endothelium starting from a low-resolution (LR) video sequence obtained with a general purpose slit lamp biomicroscope. An image quality typical of dedicated and more expensive confocal microscopes is achieved via software magnification by exploiting information redundancy in the video sequence. In particular, the HR image is generated from the best LR frames, obtained by identifying the most suitable endothelium video subsequence using a support vector machine-based learning approach, followed by a robust graph-based frame registration. Results on long, real sequences show that the…

Color Correction for Image Stitching by Monotone Cubic Spline Interpolation

2015

This paper proposes a novel color correction scheme for image stitching where the color map transfer is modelled by a monotone Hermite cubic spline and smoothly propagated into the target image. A three-segments monotone cubic spline minimizing color distribution statistics and gradient differences with respect to both the source and target images is used. While the spline model can handle non-linear color maps, the minimization over the gradient differences limits strong alterations on the image structure. Adaptive heuristics are introduced to reduce the minimization search space and thus computational time. Experimental comparisons with respect to the state-of-the-art linear mapping model…

Restoration of Digitized Damaged Photos using Bit-Plane Slicing

2007

Digital image restoration aims to recover damaged zones of a digital image, using surrounding information. In this paper we propose a novel approach, based on bit-plane slicing decomposition, with the purpose to make information analysis and reconstruction process easy, fast and effective. Tests have been made on digitized damaged old photos to restore several classes of typical defects in old photographic prints.

Dealing with reconstruction problems: two cases study

Reconstruction problems are always included in a computer vision system as one of the key step toward the recognition of a scene. There are hierarchies of reconstruction that go from pixels to regions in the lower level, and from patches to objects in higher steps. The success of the reconstruction phase de-pends on several factors: the selection of "suitable" features, the matching function, the linking strategy. I this paper we show some of problems and solutions in two different contexts: the 3D reconstruction from cloud of points representing fragments of archeological finding, and the mosaicing from sea bed video frames. Preliminary results show that in both cases the accuracy is satis…

Global Archaelogical Mosaicing for Underwater Scenes

2006

This contribution regards the mosaicing of seabed landscapes, in order to represent higher resolution photos of whole sites with wrecks in a fast and safe fashion. A stereo vision system has been arranged by adding two cameras to the payload aboard a Remotely Operated Vehicle. A number of problems arise due to poor luminosity, cloudy water, water distortion and presence of artifacts. A robust algorithm has been defined to reduce the radial distortion of the camera lenses and to enhance the results.

Il parametro della pericolosità ed i poteri di polizia di sicurezza

2022

As is well known, the Republican Constitution configures public security in objective terms. This is framed as a public interest related to a situation of orderly and peaceful coexistence, an indispensable prerequisite for the exercise of other fundamental rights, or as an objective interest of the state, of the legal system, and therefore of the community as a whole. An idea of public security is expressed, on the one hand, as a limit to the exercise of freedoms, on the other, as a regulatory and administrative task of public authorities and, in particular, of the state apparatus. The first aspect that is most relevant here is found in the references to the concept of security contained in…

Maximizing versus satisficing in the digital age: Disjoint scales and the case for “construct consensus”

2018

Abstract A question facing us today, in the new and rapidly evolving digital age, is whether searching for the best option – being a maximizer – leads to greater happiness and better outcomes than settling on the first good enough option found – or “satisficing.” Answers to this question inform behavioural insights to improve well-being and decision-making in policy and organizational settings. Yet, the answers to this fundamental question of measurement of the happiness of a maximizer versus a satisficer in the current psychological literature are: 1) conflicting; 2) anchored on the use of the first scale published to measure maximization as an individual-difference, and 3) unable to descr…

The Decision Making Tendency Inventory: A new measure to assess maximizing, satisficing, and minimizing

2015

Abstract We introduce the Decision Making Tendency Inventory (DMTI), a new scale for measuring the decision-making tendencies to maximize, to satisfice, and to minimize. The scale has promising psychometric properties. Our findings show that the revealed tendencies are independent from each other and from the specific decision-making domain. Each factor is differently related to a set of indices of well-being and functioning, suggesting intriguing considerations regarding the distinctive characteristics of maximizing, satisficing, and minimizing. The DMTI extends previous research on maximizing and might contribute to explain the inconsistent results in the literature. Directions for future…
