A LiDAR Prototype with Silicon Photomultiplier and MEMS Mirrors

In this paper, we present a low cost prototype of a Time-Of-Flight (TOF) LiDAR system, employing a SiPM as photo detector and MEMS mirrors in order to steer the nanosecond pulsed optical beam with a scanning angle of +/-6°. Preliminary TOF measurements have been performed both indoor and outdoor to test the limits of the system.

LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) systems measures the distance from the sensor to the target by determining the time between the release of the laser pulse to the receiving of the backscattered pulse. The interest in LiDAR technology has exploded in recent years since the applications are numerous. Here, we would highlight the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and for rendezvous & docking operations between spacecraft. Comparison in terms of TOF measurements between APD and SiPM for LiDAR applications

We present an experimental comparison of two LiDAR systems, employing the SiPM and the APD as photodetectors, in terms of TOF measurements differing for the distance of the target and at different intensities of ambient light. The use of the APD represents the conventional approach, while the implementation of the SiPM is innovative. The performed measurements achieved very promising results, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of our LiDAR based on SiPM.

To realize high-efficiency thin-film silicon solar cells it is crucial to develop light-trapping methods that can increase absorption of the near- bandgap light in the silicon material. That can be achieved using the far-field scattering properties of metal nanoparticles (MNP) sustaining surface plasmons. The MNPs should be inserted in the back of the cell, embedded in the transparent conductive oxide (TCO) layer which separates the rear mirror from the silicon layers. Light-harvesting complex (LHCII) of the photosynthetic apparatus in plants is attached to type-II core-shell CdTe/CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals (quantum dots, QD) exhibiting an absorption band at 710 nm and carrying a dihydrolipoic acid coating for water solubility. LHCII stays functional upon binding to the QD surface and enhances the light utilization of the QDs significantly, similar to its light-harvesting function in photosynthesis. Electronic excitation energy transfer of about 50% efficiency is shown by donor (LHCII) fluorescence quenching as well as sensitized acceptor (QD) emission and corroborated by time-resolved fluorescence measurements. Light harvesting with Ge quantum dots embedded in SiO2 and Si3N4

Cataloged from PDF version of article. Germanium quantum dots (QDs) embedded in SiO2 or in Si3N4 have been studied for light harvesting purposes. SiGeO or SiGeN thin films, produced by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, have been annealed up to 850 degrees C to induce Ge QD precipitation in Si based matrices. By varying the Ge content, the QD diameter can be tuned in the 3-9 nm range in the SiO2 matrix, or in the 1-2 nm range in the Si3N4 matrix, as measured by transmission electron microscopy. The problem of spatial homogeneity in an LCoS projector

Abstract Video projectors allow interesting applications in vision sciences since they provide a large projection area. We have colorimetrically characterized a LCoS projector using a mathematical model requiring additivity and constancy of the primaries -a sigmoid function in our case. Significant differences in chromaticity in the CIELAB space, but not in lightness, were found between the center and the corners of the screen. The lack of spatial homogeneity led us to estimate the parameters of the model as a function of spatial position, using different strategies. Twenty-four, and possibly twenty-five painted stelae and aediculae were found, in different times, in the area of the necropolis of Lilybaeum (1903, 1974-1984), and further North, nearer to the ancient sea-shore (1895); most recently, two new entries enhanced the Museo Lilibeo (2009), beside two elements from decorated epitymbia. Despite previous scholarly opinions spread these artifacts over three centuries, as a whole, they can be assigned approximately to Cicero’s time.
