Defining gut mycobiota for wild animals: a need for caution in assigning authentic resident fungal taxa
2021
Animal gut mycobiota, the community of fungi that reside within the gastrointestinal tract, make an important contribution to host health. Accordingly, there is an emerging interest to quantify the gut mycobiota of wild animals. However, many studies of wild animal gut mycobiota do not distinguish between the fungi that likely can reside within animal gastrointestinal tracts from the fungal taxa that are non-residents, such as macrofungi, lichens or plant symbionts/pathogens that can be ingested as part of the host’s diet. Confounding the non-resident and resident gut fungi may obscure attempts to identify processes associated with the authentic, resident gut mycobiota per se. To redress th…
2005
Landscape is shaped by a community of people who do not necessarily share the same intentions and/or expectations towards landscape. Thus, the representations of the people involved (planners, decisions makers, users) influence the way landscape is being taken into consideration in the field of town-and-country-planning. The multiple representations hinder communication while projects are being discussed, yet the interlocutors are bound to come to a general agreement to guarantee an negociated-and-shared achievement. On the other hand, the minimal education about landscape is necessary to apprehend the landscaped problematics of the concerned areas; nevertheless, people usually miss the poi…
Photonic crystal intermediate reflector in micromorph tandem solar cells
2011
Experimental and numerical evidences are presented which show that the efficiency of silicon based tandem solar-cells can be increased by incorporating a three-dimensional photonic crystal as an intermediate reflector.
The essay traces the milestones of the interventions on the water-front of Palermo, through an analysis of the major urban transformations and the buildings that characterize it. The research wa…
Infrastrutture e tessuti urbani.
‘Old Frisian krocha: Setting Fire with a Coal Pan’
2017
TheBrokmerbrefand the Emsigo Compensation Tariff concerning arson provide a number of occurrences of the wordkrocha, otherwise unrecorded in Old Frisian, in the meaning ‘coal pan’. Yet the Modern Frisian dialect words denote different sorts of cooking pots, either earthen or metal, and apparently do not support the specialized meaning of the Old Frisian. Coal pans were quite common in medieval times, however, and the legal provisions under examination provide both homely and lively descriptions of arson, possibly based on actual cases. Medieval iconography of the devil as an arsonist—portrayed with a coal pan in his hand—assists the interpretation ofkrocha, which goes back to Richthofen, an…
Changes in surface stress, morphology and chemical composition of silica and silicon nitride surfaces during the etching by gaseous HF acid
2007
International audience; HF acid attack of SiO2 and Si3N4 substrates is analyzed to improve the sensitivity of a sensor based on inicrocantilever. Ex situ analysis of the etching using XPS, SIMS and AFM show significant changes in the anisotropy and the rate of the etching of the oxides on SiO2 and Si3N4 surface. Those differences influence the kinetic evolution of the plastic bending deflection of the cantilever coated with SiO2 and Si3N4 layer, respectively. The linear dependence between the HF concentration and the Si3N4 cantilever bending corresponds to a deep attack of the layer whereas the nonlinear behavior observed for SiO2 layer can be explained by a combination of deep and lateral …
Ca-P-O thin film preparation, modification and characterisation
2011
Bioceramics are biocompatible ceramic materials, that interact with biological systems of the body to treat, strengthen or replace body functions. Most conventional bioceramics are oxide ceramics, glass ceramics and calcium phosphate ceramics. Among these calcium phosphates, synthetic hydroxyapatite has been extensively studied due to its biomimetic properties similar to that of natural bone. One approach to prepare synthetic hydroxyapatite is to first deposit amorphous Ca-P-O thin film and then by means of post deposition annealing initiate the formation of hydroxyapatite crystals to the film. In addition to the correct film composition and crystalline structure, other surface properties s…
