A unique dispositive to determine casein which is the most abundant protein in dairy sewages has been proposed. In this sensing technology, the derivatization reagent 1,2-naphtoquininone 4-sulphonate (NQS) is embedded into a polydimethylsiloxane-tetraethylortosilicate-SiO2 nanoparticles composite (PDMS-TEOS-SiO2NPs). When the composite is immersed into the samples, casein is extracted from the solution and derivatized inside the PDMS matrix after 10 min at 100°C. The sensing support changes its color from yellow to orange depending on the casein concentration. Pressure Dependence of Positron Annihilation in Si

The pressure dependence of the electron-positron and the electron-electron momentum densities in silicon are studied. The observations that the electron-positron momentum density increases more rapidly with pressure than the electron-electron momentum density alone is explained in terms of increased positron penetration into the ion cores. The computational technique used here is based on the independent-particle model (IPM) coupled with the use of the electron pseudo-wave functions.

First Steps of µTAS in Latvia

Owing to participation of Latvian and Swedish scientists in the field of chemically sensitive FET and MOS structures it was possible to utilize the technological facilities of the Microelectronics enterprise in Latvia in making an integrated smart sensor as a matrix of chemically sensitive FETs by using silicon based microtechnology. Thereby the first steps of µTAS in Latvia are made in the direction of integration of solid state ionic materials with FET and MOS structures to develop new chemically sensitive structures and systems.

The CogALex-IV Shared Task on the Lexical Access Problem

The shared task of the 4th Workshop on Cognitive Aspects of the Lexicon (CogALexIV) was devoted to a subtask of the lexical access problem, namely multi-stimulus association. In this task, participants were supposed to determine automatically an expected response based on a number of received stimulus words. We describe here the task definition, the theoretical background, the training and test data sets, and the evaluation procedure used for ranking the participating systems. We also summarize the approaches used and present the results of the evaluation. In conclusion, the outcome of the competition are a number of systems which provide very good solutions to the problem.
Automatic identification of word translations from unrelated English and German corpora

Algorithms for the alignment of words in translated texts are well established. However, only recently new approaches have been proposed to identify word translations from non-parallel or even unrelated texts. This task is more difficult, because most statistical clues useful in the processing of parallel texts cannot be applied to non-parallel texts. Whereas for parallel texts in some studies up to 99% of the word alignments have been shown to be correct, the accuracy for non-parallel texts has been around 30% up to now.
