Formal Variation and Language Change in Catalan Quantifiers : the Role of Pragmatics

2020

This article studies the formal variation of the masculine singular forms of the quantifiers u/un 'one', algú/algun 'someone, some', ningú/ningun 'no-one, anyone, not one, any, none' and cada u/cada un 'everyone, each one' in contemporary Catalan. The standard uses of these forms are contrasted with dialectal uses, obtained from a thorough search in oral and written corpora. In addition, they are compared with the uses in the other Romance languages and with their historical evolution in Catalan. The whole set of data, and especially the dialectal information on the Valencian area, allow us to explain the various factors that have interacted in the variation and formal change of these quant…

Nomi di piante e nomi di santi. San Giovanni nella lessicografia botanica siciliana

2022

Biofabrication of biosilica-glass by living organisms

2008

Biosilicification is an evolutionarily old and widespread type of biomineralization both in unicellular and multicellular organisms, including sponges, diatoms, radiolarians, choanoflagellates, and higher plants. In the last few years combined efforts in molecular biology, cell biology, and inorganic and analytical chemistry have allowed the first insight into the molecular mechanisms by which these organisms form an astonishing variety of siliceous structures that cannot be achieved by chemical methods. Here we report about the present stage of knowledge on structure, biochemical composition, and mechanisms of biosilica formation, focusing our attention particularly on sponges because of t…

La literatura emblemática, Goya y la avaricia

1991

GOYA, A CABALLO ENTRE DOS EPOCAS, RECURRIO A LA EMBLEMATICA COMO FUENTE DE INSPIRACION EN ALGUNAS DE SUS OBRAS, A LAS QUE IMPRIMIO SU PERSONAL INTERPRETACION. CON ESTA ORIENTACION, ENTRE SUS PRINCIPALES FUENTES SE ENCUENTRAN LOS EMBLEMAS DE ALCIATO Y EL TEATRO MORAL DE VAENIUS. (A.B.C./ L.A.G.)

Homeostasis in school science: analysis of the subject and results of a proposal for classroom work

2016

Evaluation of 2,3-epoxypropyl groups and functionalization yield in glycidyl methacrylate monoliths using gas chromatography

2014

Abstract Poly(glycidyl methacrylate- co -ethylene dimethacrylate) (poly(GMA- co -EDMA)) is most frequently used as parent monolith to obtain stationary phases with a variety of surface chemistries for liquid chromatography and capillary electrochromatography. Functionalization is performed by opening the accessible 2,3-epoxypropyl groups of the monolith with a suitable reagent. The number of 2,3-epoxypropyl groups which are accessible before and after the functionalization reaction, and the grafting yield, are important parameters, required both to optimize functionalization and to interpret the chromatographic performance of functionalized monoliths. In this work, a method capable of provi…

<title>Holographic recording in amorphous semiconductor films</title>

1997

The present state of the real time holographic recording in amorphous semiconductor films is reviewed including mechanisms, parameters, properties and applications. Effects of the coherent, incoherent and relaxational self- enhancement as well as the influence of the film structure relaxation are considered. Quasi-permanent sub-band-gap light holographic recording is reported for the first time. 157

Wavelength-compensated time-sequential multiplexed color joint transform correlator

2010

We report a wavelength-compensated three-channel (RGB) joint transform correlator (JTC) for color pattern recognition using a ferroelectric liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) operating in binary pure phase modulation. We apply a previously reported time-multiplexing technique useful in creating wavelength-compensated diffraction patterns, based on the synchronization of properly scaled diffraction masks with the input wavelength selection obtained by applying a rotating RGB color-filter wheel to an Ar-Kr laser. The application of this technique to a JTC architecture permits real-time color object detection. In order to achieve a high light efficiency for the correlation process, w…

Third-harmonic light polarization control in magnetically resonant silicon metasurfaces

2021

Nonlinear metasurfaces have become prominent tools for controlling and engineering light at the nanoscale. Usually, the polarization of the total generated third harmonic is studied. However, diffraction orders may present different polarizations. Here, we design an high quality factor silicon metasurface for third harmonic generation and perform back focal plane imaging of the diffraction orders, which present a rich variety of polarization states. Our results demonstrate the possibility of tailoring the polarization of the generated nonlinear diffraction orders paving the way to a higher degree of wavefront control.
