Humidity Sensing by Polymer-Loaded UHF RFID Antennas
2012
Passive ultra high-frequency radio frequency identification tags, besides item labeling, are also able to exploit capability to sense the physical state of the tagged object as well as of the surrounding environment. Here, a new family of polymer-doped tags are proposed and fully characterized for the detection of ambient humidity. A sensitive chemical species based on PEDOT:PSS is used to load a shaped slot, carved into a folded-like patch tag. The communication and sensing capabilities of the resulting radio-sensor are investigated by means of simulation and measurements that show how to control and balance above opposite requirements by a proper deposition of the sensitive material. The …
Energy market segmentation for distributed energy resources implementation purposes
2007
The new power market scene has made its actors aware of the importance of offering customers a set of products according to their specific needs. At the same time, a desirable massive deployment of distributed energy resources would require that the products be designed for specific purposes for each type of customer. For these reasons, it is essential to identify the energy behaviour of different customer segments existing in the electricity market. This paper presents a segmentation methodology that allows the identification of different types of customers in accordance with their energy use. This segmentation is conceptually different from the one that is currently performed by the utili…
Optical technique for classification, recognition and identification of obscured objects
2010
Abstract The capability to classify, recognize and to identify objects from spatially low resolution images has high significance in security related applications especially in a case that recognition of camouflaged object is required. In this paper we present a novel approach in which the scenery containing obscured objects which we wish to classify, recognize or identify is illuminated by spatially coherent beam (e.g. laser) and therefore secondary speckles pattern is reflected from the objects. By special image processing algorithm developed for this research and which is basically based upon temporal tracking of the random speckle pattern one may extract the temporal signature of the ob…
Fingerprint Registration Using Specialized Genetic Algorithms
2005
One of the most common problem to realize a robust matching algorithm in an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) is the images registration. In this paper a fingerprints registration method based on a specialized genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. A global transformation between two fingerprint images is performed using genetic data evolutions based on specialized mutation rate and solution refining. An AFIS including the above method has been developed and tested on two different fingerprint databases: NIST 4 ink-on-paper and self optical scanned. The obtained experimental results show that the proposed approach is comparable with literature systems working on medium quality…
The possibilities of using the acoustic emission method in expert systems for the evaluation of insulation systems of power transformers
2006
The paper presents the range and possibilities of using expert systems at diagnostic measurements of insulation systems of power appliances taken by the acoustic emission (AE) method. Multi-parametric descriptors characterizing the AE signals, which can be used in the knowledge base as criteria making the identification of basic partial discharge forms (PDs) possible, have been characterized in detail. The tables show descriptors describing the AE signals registered in time, frequency, time-frequency domains and statistical data. Moreover, computational tools that can be used in the process of conclusion drawing were suggested and the range of the research work done by the authors of the pa…
Research opportunities in performance measurement in public utilities regulation
2015
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a method to choose a set of scientific articles about performance measurement in public utilities regulation. The method is designed to identify references with high academic relevance in databases accessed via the internet, and, through these articles, to perform a mapping of these publications and conduct a systemic analysis. Design/methodology/approach – The study is characterized as exploratory and descriptive with a qualitative and quantitative approach. Incorporates an inductive logic, and draws on primary and secondary data sources. The research involves the application of a technical procedure for selection and study of selected art…
Automatic identification of word translations from unrelated English and German corpora
1999
Algorithms for the alignment of words in translated texts are well established. However, only recently new approaches have been proposed to identify word translations from non-parallel or even unrelated texts. This task is more difficult, because most statistical clues useful in the processing of parallel texts cannot be applied to non-parallel texts. Whereas for parallel texts in some studies up to 99% of the word alignments have been shown to be correct, the accuracy for non-parallel texts has been around 30% up to now. The current study, which is based on the assumption that there is a correlation between the patterns of word co-occurrences in corpora of different languages, makes a sign…
State Space-Vector Model of Linear Induction Motors Including End-effects and Iron Losses - Part II: Model Identification and Results
2020
This is the second part of an article, divided into two parts, dealing with the definition of a space-vector dynamic model of the linear induction motor (LIM) taking into consideration both the dynamic end-effects and the iron losses as well as the offline identification of its parameters. This second part is devoted to the description of an identification technique that has been suitably developed for the estimation of the electrical parameters of the LIM dynamic model accounting for both the dynamic end-effects and iron losses. Such an identification technique is strictly related to the state formulation of the proposed model and exploits genetic algorithms for minimizing a suitable cost …
Application of model quality evaluation to systems biology
2008
Application of model quality evaluation to the quasispecies models is presented. These models are useful for the analysis of the DNA and RNA evolution and for the description of the population dynamics of viruses and bacteria. An estimate of the parameters together with their interval of variability is computed and the quality evaluation is tested on the basis of the model prediction error capability.
State Space-Vector Model of Linear Induction Motors including End-Effects and Iron Losses Part I: Theoretical Analysis
2020
This is the first part of the article, divided into two parts, dealing with the definition of a space-vector dynamic model of the linear induction motor (LIM) taking into consideration both the dynamic end-effects and the iron losses and its offline identification. This first part specifically treats the theoretical formulation of this model, which has been expressed in a state form, so to be, in perspective, suitably adopted for developing novel nonlinear control techniques, nonlinear observers as well as electrical losses minimization techniques. Besides the formulation of the dynamic model in space-vector state form, a steady-state analysis is proposed, highlighting the combined effects …
