Play and liberty : A brief incursion into some ideological currents in the history of systems‐oriented family therapy
2022
We reflect on family therapy and its history from two points of view, as an entity that becomes understood with the help of a twofold concept of a game, and a twofold concept of liberty. Systemic family therapy has always been comprehended with the help of game theory. Its development becomes more properly understood if we keep in mind that game itself is a dualistic concept entailing both a cultural and a logico-mathematical interpretation of a game. We show how cultural ethos has molded the ways how game metaphor have been implemented to systemic thinking. In the same manner we show how Isaiah Berlin's idea of two incompatible concepts of liberty helps to contextualize family therapy in a…
Promoting neoliberal ideology in Finnish rural community development : the creation of new moral actors
2019
Today’s political ambitions are based on the neoliberal aspiration to diminish the state’s role and responsibilities, and to transfer those responsibilities to local communities and individuals in ways that idealise those communities, promising to ‘give power to the people’. Instead of highlighting individualism, neoliberalism now celebrates communities and participation. This article deals with the effects of this ideology with regard to Finnish rural policy objectives. Drawing on Finnish village action programmes as data, we argue that these ideological views aim to transform individuals and create new moral actors. Our research indicates that Finland’s rural policy objectives invoke acto…
The Soldiers of Odin Finland : From a local movement to an international franchise
2019
This chapter analyzes the growth of the Soldier of Odin Finland from a local phenomenon to an international movement, exploring the reasons behind both the success of the SOO, and its later decline in Finland as well as internationally. Additionally, the chapter describes the connections of the SOO with the Finnish extreme right and competition they had with other street patrol organizations. It scrutinizes the rhetoric they use and the ideology they share, and analyzes profiles of SOO leaders in Finland. The chapter is based on data drawn from interviews with Soldiers of Odin and other street patrol groups, police and court files, and online observation. peerReviewed

The conversion of the atom : nuclear science and ideology in Francoist Spain
2016
At the beginning of the atomic age, Francoist Spain launched an expensive project to develop, research and use nuclear energy. Scientists, the military and high-ranking officials in the administration mobilised to materialise a technoscientific dream with an international scope. The modernity of nuclear science contrasts with the reactionary ideology of the regime, but the paradox is only apparent because until now there has not necessarily been any historical relationship between science and democracy. The drive towards nuclear technoscience reveals the mutual construction of science and politics during the Cold War era and the different ways to appropriate and exploit the atom during the …
Realitat, fantasia i ideologia en la poètica de Pere Calders
2019
This paper analyses the value and meaning of the concepts "reality" and "fantasy" in Pere Calders' literary world, as the foundations of a literary attitude upholding the imaginary and the fantastic and facing realistic literature of committed or testimonial nature. Secondly, it analyses the author's critiques of positivist scientism and his claim of art and literature as gnoseological alternatives. The analysis of two short stories completes the ideological approach to Calders' oeuvre: "The First Harlequin", as opposed to religious thinking, and "The Streak and the Wish" [1], as a metaphoric view of Catalonian exile.[1] Traducció del títol a càrrec de Mara Faye Lethem. L'article analitza e…
(Re-)examining horizons in feminist translation studies: towards a third wave
2009
This article is an English version of "(Re)examinando horizontes en los estudios feministas de traducción: ¿hacia una tercera ola?" by Olga Castro, which was first published in MonTI 1 (2009), pp. 59-86. It was not included on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism and internationalism. Feminisms are one of those framework theories that have contributed powerfully to all areas of society, including Translation Studies. The most evident outcome of this interplay is the emergence, in the 1980s, of a Feminist Translation school in Canada, which placed gender in the spo…
