Thiolate Adsorption on Au(hkl) and Equilibrium Shape of Large Thiolate-covered Gold Nanoparticles
2013
The adsorption of thiolates on Au surfaces employing density-functional-theory calculations has been studied. The dissociative chemisorption of dimethyl disulfide (CH3S−SCH3) on 14 different Au(hkl) is used as a model system. We discuss trends on adsorption energies, bond lengths, and bond angles as the surface structure changes, considering every possible Au(hkl) with h, k, l ≤ 3 plus the kinked Au(421). Methanethiolate (CH3S-) prefers adsorption on bridge sites on all surfaces considered; hollow and on top sites are highly unfavourable. The interface tensions for Au(hkl)-thiolate interfaces is determined at low coverage. Using the interface tensions in a Wulff construction method, we cons…

Multi-technical approach for the characterization of polychrome decorative surfaces at Spanish Mission Churches in Nueva Vizcaya (Chihuahua, Mexico)
2020
An interdisciplinary and multi-institutional group of science and art conservation specialists has provided new insight into the painting materials used in the polychrome walls and wooden ceilings in four seventeenth century Spanish colonial churches of Nueva Vizcaya (Chihuahua, Mexico). A multi-analytical study of the decorative surfaces was performed in situ using spectroscopic approaches (XRF, FORS), False Colour Infrared Reflectography – IRFC, as well as micro sampling for ATR-FTIR, LM and GC/MS laboratory analyses. A survey of natural resources were also studied by ATR-FTIR and LM to elucidate the natural occurrence of a select number of materials found in the surrounding areas of the …

Molecular evolution and complete genome sequences in forensic analysis: Neisseria gonorrhoeae in a transmission case
2019
Molecular epidemiology and phylogenetic analyses are frequently used in the investigation of viral transmission cases in forensic contexts. Here, we present the methods and results of the analysis of a bacterial transmission in an alleged child abuse case using complete genome sequences obtained by high-throughput sequencing (HTS) methods.

AISF position paper on liver disease and pregnancy.
2016
Abstract The relationship between liver disease and pregnancy is of great clinical impact. Severe liver disease in pregnancy is rare; however, pregnancy-related liver disease is the most frequent cause of liver dysfunction during pregnancy and represents a severe threat to foetal and maternal survival. A rapid differential diagnosis between liver disease related or unrelated to pregnancy is required in women who present with liver dysfunction during pregnancy. This report summarizes the recommendation of an expert panel established by the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF) on the management of liver disease during pregnancy. The article provides an overview of liver disea…
TFIIH Operates through an Expanded Proximal Promoter To Fine-Tune c-myc Expression
2004
A continuous stream of activating and repressing signals is processed by the transcription complex paused at the promoter of the c-myc proto-oncogene. The general transcription factor IIH (TFIIH) is held at promoters prior to promoter escape and so is well situated to channel the input of activators and repressors to modulate c-myc expression. We have compared cells expressing only a mutated p89 (xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group B [XPB]), the largest TFIIH subunit, with the same cells functionally complemented with the wild-type protein (XPB/wt-p89). Here, we show structural, compositional, and functional differences in transcription complexes between XPB and XPB/wt-89 cells at t…
The Sea Urchin sns5 Insulator Protects Retroviral Vectors From Chromosomal Position Effects by Maintaining Active Chromatin Structure
2009
Silencing and position-effect (PE) variegation (PEV), which is due to integration of viral vectors in heterochromatin regions, are considered significant obstacles to obtaining a consistent level of transgene expression in gene therapy. The inclusion of chromatin insulators into vectors has been proposed to counteract this position-dependent variegation of transgene expression. Here, we show that the sea urchin chromatin insulator, sns5, protects a recombinant gamma-retroviral vector from the negative influence of chromatin in erythroid milieu. This element increases the probability of vector expression at different chromosomal integration sites, which reduces both silencing and PEV. By chr…
