Effects of LASIK on Corneal Endothelium Using the 15-kHz IntraLase Femtosecond Laser

PURPOSE: To assess the effects of LASIK with the 15-kHz IntraLase femtosecond laser on corneal endothelium. METHODS: In a prospective, single-center clinical trial, 138 patients (mean age: 32.0±7.1 years [range: 21 to 42 years]) underwent femtosecond LASIK for the correction of myopia −0.75 to −9.00 diopters (D) and cylinder up to 3.25 D. Patients were divided into two groups: contact lens group (n=76) and non-contact lens group (n=62). Contrast sensitivity after LASIK flap creation with a femtosecond laser and a mechanical microkeratome

ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To compare the effects on contrast sensitivity of the IntraLase femtosecond laser for flap creation (IntraLASIK) and standard LASIK for myopia. METHODS: Two hundred eyes of 100 consecutive patients underwent LASIK treatment using the VISX S2 laser system. Data from: Moving in the Anthropocene: global reductions in terrestrial mammalian movements

Animal movement is fundamental for ecosystem functioning and species survival, yet the effects of the anthropogenic footprint on animal movements have not been estimated across species. Using a unique GPS-tracking database of 803 individuals across 57 species, we found that movements of mammals in areas with a comparatively high human footprint were on average one-half to one-third the extent of their movements in areas with a low human footprint. We attribute this reduction to behavioral changes of individual animals and to the exclusion of species with long-range movements from areas with higher human impact. In September 2014 an unusual mixture of ctenophores was recorded at Arboretet, south-western Norway and at Flødevigen, near Arendal on the south coast of Norway. In addition to the invasive American lobate ctenophore,Mnemiopsis leidyi, the common northern lobate ctenophoreBolinopsis infundibulumand the cydippidPleurobrachia pileus, two beroid ctenophores, were noted –Beroe cucumisandBeroegracilis. The latter species had not been documented before in Norwegian waters.

ILEO BILIARE: DIAGNOSI E TRATTAMENTO. CASE REPORT

The authors present a case of gallstone intermittent ileus caused by the passage of a big gallstone (about 4 cm in diameter) in the intestinal lumen, through a cholecystoduodenal fistula. They emphasize the peculiarity of the case for the characteristics of symptoms and for casual diagnostic check-up with a ultrasonography. The disease is not frequently diagnosed; today it has a safe recognition by modern imaging. The symptoms can be intermittent and, even when there are the classic signs of intestinal occlusion, the site of the occlusion is various. With a timely endoscopical or surgical approach (open or laparoscopic) it is possible to reduce mortality of patients treated in emergency.

Post-operative ileus in elderly patients

Materials and methods Data collected from 20 patients undergoing right hemicolectomy for right bowel cancer were evaluated. Patients included were divided in two groups of 10 subjects respectively, according their age. In the first group were allocated patients of age ≥ 70 years, whereas in the second group were included subjects of age ≤ 60 years. Patients affected by postoperative delirium or presenting complications that could altered the regain of intestinal motility were excluded. The time of first passage of flatus, the time of first defecation and the postoperative stay were evaluated.
