Many-particle approach to the image-charge effect

2011

Microscopical systems of molecules and atomic chains are studied to obtain information about quantum-transport phenomena. Both exact diagonalization method through second quantization and perturbation theory approach with Feynman diagrams are described, and then the energy spectra for the studied systems are calculated using the two methods.

Change in body image among depressed adult outpatients after a dance movement therapy group treatment

2018

Abstract This study reports on the body image of depressed psychiatric outpatients, and the impact thereon of a dance movement therapy (DMT) group. Body image is perceived as a tri-partite construct consisting of image-properties, body-self, and body memory. Depressed patients in an outpatient mental health service participated in a DMT group treatment consisting of twelve 90-min long sessions in groups of 4–7 patients. Patients (N = 18) responded to a structured Body Image Assessment (BIA) before and after the treatment. Initially, the depressed patients’ body image was characterized by fragmentation, distortions, and shallowness of body awareness. The DMT group treatment aimed to offer th…

EFFECTIVENESS OF BASALT FIBRE-REINFORCED CEMENTITIOUS SYSTEMS IN CONFINING MASONRY MEMBERS: AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION

2020

The use of composites based on fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) to strengthen masonry columns has become a common practice in the last decades. FRPs, however, exhibit some shortcomings when applied to masonry substrates, due to the organic nature of their matrix. For this reason, increasing attention is paid today to composites based on fibre-reinforced cementitious matrices (FRCMs), in which the polymeric matrix is replaced with an inorganic matrix (such as cementitious mortars). Cementitious matrices guarantee higher breathability and compatibility with the substrate, less sensitivity to debonding at the interfaces, and higher resistance to fire and high temperatures. Moreover, due to the…

Inhibitory priming in auditory word recognition: Is it really the product of response biases ?

2007

Descriptive problems and numerical thinking: The case of one hundred poultryUnder the methodological framework of the didactic analysis and historical-epistemological analysis a study of the classical descriptive problems that emanate from the “hundred poultry” is presented. A…

8.4GHz VLBI observations of SN2004et in NGC6946

2007

We report on 8.4GHz Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations of the type II-P supernova SN2004et in the spiral galaxy NGC 6946, made on 20 February 2005 (151 days after explosion). The Very Large Array (VLA) flux density was 1.23$\pm$0.07 mJy, corresponding to an isotropic luminosity at 8.4GHz of (4.45$\pm$0.3)$\times10^{25}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$ and a brightness temperature of (1.3$\pm$0.3)$\times10^{8}$ K. We also provide an improved source position, accurate to about 0.5 mas in each coordinate. The VLBI image shows a clear asymmetry. From model fitting of the size of the radio emission, we estimate a minimum expansion velocity of 15,700$\pm$2,000 km s$^{-1}$. This velocity…

Spurious source generation in mapping from noisy phase-self-calibrated data

2008

Phase self-calibration (or selfcal) is an algorithm often used in the calibration of interferometric observations in astronomy. Although a powerful tool, this algorithm presents strong limitations when applied to data with a low signal-to-noise ratio. We analyze the artifacts that the phase selfcal algorithm produces when applied to extremely noisy data. We show how the phase selfcal may generate a spurious source in the sky from a distribution of completely random visibilities. This spurious source is indistinguishable from a real one. We numerically and analytically compute the relationship between the maximum spurious flux density generated by selfcal from noise and the particulars of th…

Weight Bias Internalization

2018

Weight stigma typically focuses on suggestions that people with overweight and obesity are incompetent and immoral. Integrating so far unconnected lines of research, the current research presents two studies that examine the motivational relevance of these aspects of weight stigma. Specifically, we tested the proposition that people with overweight and obesity respond differently to the public viewing them as incompetent compared to immoral, as these aspects of weight stigma differ in reparability. We expect that threats to competence are more acceptable and thus related to a constructive response that is more effective in losing weight in the long-run. By contrast, we propose that threats …

Automated approach for indirect immunofluorescence images classification based on unsupervised clustering method

2018

Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are a collection of many complex disorders of unknown aetiology resulting in immune responses to self-antigens and are thought to result from interactions between genetic and environmental factors. ADs collectively are amongst the most prevalent diseases in the U.S., affecting at least 7% of the population. The diagnosis of ADs is very complex, the standard screening methods provides seeking and recognizing of Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA) by Indirect ImmunoFluorescence (IIF) based on HEp-2 cells. In this paper an automatic system able to identify and classify the Centromere pattern is presented. The method is based on the grouping of centromeres present on the cell…
