Amine functionalized ZrO2 nanoparticles as biocompatible and luminescent probes for ligand specific cellular imaging
2015
Surface functionalized ZrO2 nanoparticles show strong photoluminescence and are a versatile tool for cellular targeting due to their chemical functionality. They are highly photostable, biocompatible and amenable to coupling with bioligands (e.g. secondary goat anti-rabbit antibody (GAR) and tri-phenyl phosphine (TPP)) via carbodiimide chemistry. Antibody (GAR) functionalized ZrO2 nanoparticles were used to image the nuclear protein Sirt6, whereas triphenyl phosphonium ion (TPP) functionalized ZrO2 nanoparticles specifically targeted the mitochondria. The versatility and easiness of the ZrO2 surface modification opens up new possibilities for designing non-toxic water dispersible and photos…
Thermodiffusion anisotropy under a magnetic field in ionic liquid-based ferrofluids
2021
International audience; Ferrofluids based on maghemite nanoparticles (NPs), typically 10 nm in diameter, are dispersed in an ionic liquid (1-ethyl 3-methylimidazolium bistriflimide - EMIM-TFSI). The average interparticle interaction is found to be repulsive by small angle scattering of X-rays and of neutrons, with a second virial coefficient A2 = 7.3. A moderately concentrated sample at Φ = 5.95 vol% is probed by forced Rayleigh scattering under an applied magnetic field (up to H = 100 kA m-1) from room temperature up to T = 460 K. Irrespective of the values of H and T, the NPs in this study are always found to migrate towards the cold region. The in-field anisotropy of the mass diffusion c…
Hexacyanoferrate (III) stimulation of elongation in coleoptile segments fromZea mays L.
1995
The influence of exogenous potassium hexacyanoferrate (III) (HCF III) on elongation of maize (Zea mays L.) coleoptile segments was investigated. Addition of HCF III led to a strong stimulation of growth both in the presence and absence of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). The magnitude of growth stimulation was dependent on the presence of IAA, HCF III concentration, incubation time, and phase growth. The reduced form, potassium hexacyanoferrate (II), was without effect on growth. In the presence of HCF III, elongation was suppressed when coleoptile segments were treated with N,N′-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, cycloheximide or atebrine (quinacrine). The addition of HCF III stimulated the IAA-induced …
Isolation and characterization of Urbain, a 20-hydroxyecdysone-inducible gene expressed during morphogenesis of Bombyx mori wing imaginal discs.
1995
In insects, wing imaginal discs respond to the steroid hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone by initiating morphogenesis leading to the formation of the adult flight appendages. In this work we analyse the expression of a Bombyx gene, referred to as Urbain, whose cDNA had been previously isolated from wing discs (Chareyre et al. 1993). Accumulation of the 1.8 kb transcript occurs concomitantly with the increase of 20-hydroxyecdysone titer at every stage examined during post-embryonic development. In vitro, its accumulation is delayed 6–9 h after exposure to 20-hydroxyecdysone. Studies in the presence of cycloheximide have established that Urbain is a secondary response gene. The sequence of the mRNA c…

Effects of metal–ligand coordination on the self-assembly behaviour of a crown ether functionalised perylenetetracarboxylic diimide
2012
A novel perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PDI) derivative, N,N′-di(4′-benzo-15-crown-5-ether)-1,7-di(4-tert-butyl-phenoxy)perylene-3,4;9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (CRPDI), has been synthesised and characterised. Dimerisation of CRPDI is induced by the presence of K+ in CHCl3 or spontaneously occurs in methanol, as revealed by absorption and emission spectroscopy. In particular, the formation of co-facial dimer in the presence of K+ proceeds in a three-stage process, as indicated by absorption spectroscopy. The belt- and rope-like nanostructures of CRPDI fabricated from methanol and CHCl3 solution in the presence of K+ are obtained by scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the conductivi…
Controlled UV-C light-induced fusion of thiol-passivated gold nanoparticles.
2011
Thiol-passivated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of a relatively small size, either decorated with chromophoric groups, such as a phthalimide (Au@PH) and benzophenone (Au@BP), or capped with octadecanethiol (Au@ODCN) have been synthesized and characterized by NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy as well as transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These NPs were irradiated in chloroform at different UV-wavelengths using either a nanosecond laser (266 and 355 nm, ca. 12 mJ/pulse, 10 ns pulse) or conventional lamps (300 nmλ400 nm and ca. 240 nmλ280 nm) and the new AuNPs were characterized by X-ray and UV-vis spectroscopy, as well as by TEM. Laser irradiation at 355 nm led to NP aggregation and precipitation,…
Straightforward synthesis of bioconjugatable azo dyes. Part 2: Black Hole Quencher-2 (BHQ-2) and BlackBerry Quencher 650 (BBQ-650) scaffolds
2014
Abstract A further extension of the efficient synthetic methodology described in Part 1, to the aromatic bis-diazo scaffold of Black Hole Quencher-2 dye is presented. Bioconjugatable derivatives bearing either azido, terminal alkyne, or maleimide reactive group were easily obtained as well as the free-phenol form of BlackBerry® Quencher 650 (BBQ-650®) initially developed by Berry & Associates, Inc. Company. The efficient conjugation ability of azido- and maleimide-quenchers was demonstrated through the facile preparation of the first water-soluble and formylated BHQ-2 dyes and a FRET-based probe suitable for the in vitro/in cellulo detection of a cancer-associated protease namely urokinase-…
Patterns of wall synthesis inSaccharomyces cerevisiae
1979
Wall formation inSaccharomyces cerevisiae seems to be the result of two main patterns of wall material deposition: (i) around the whole periphery of the cell in nonbudding ones, and (ii) mainly at the tip of the daughter cell or at the cross wall that separates dividing cells. This interpretation has been obtained following experiments in which RNA or protein synthesis has been inhibited. Under these conditions, glucan formation takes place, and wall thickening is probably due to the accumulation of this polysaccharide. Furthermore, once a pattern of wall deposition has been established, it is not modified by inhibition of RNA or protein synthesis.
Regulation of chitin synthase activity inSaccharomyces cerevisiae: Effect of the inhibition of cell division and of synthesis of RNA and protein
1980
The effect of pronase and trypsin on the activation or deactivation (degradation?) of chitin synthase ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae occurs faster in membranous preparations than in toluene-treated cells. When the temperature is raised, the former preparation is deactivated earlier than the latter one. The activity found in growing cells is not modified after inhibition of protein synthesis by cycloheximide or amino acid starvation or by the inhibition of RNA synthesis. It was possible to activate the chitin synthase ofS. cerevisiae cdc 25 grown at 23°C by means of pronase, whereas trypsin had no effect. After the cells were grown at 37°C, chitin synthase could not be activated either with tryp…
