Similarities between Playing World of Warcraft and CLIL

This article argues that playing World of Warcraft (WoW) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) have a number of similar features. We base our argument on findings from three studies. The first (Sylvén 2004/2010) is about CLIL and non-CLIL students at upper secondary level and aims to investigate what effect, if any, CLIL has on the incidental acquisition of vocabulary. The second (Sundqvist 2009) is about extramural English and aims to examine its potential impact on learners’ oral proficiency and vocabulary. Video playback provides a promising method to study social interactions, and the number of video playback experiments has been growing in recent years. Using videos has advantages over live individuals as it increases the repeatability of demonstrations, and enables researchers to manipulate the features of the presented stimulus. How observers respond to video playback might, however, differ among species, and the efficacy of video playback should be validated by investigating if individuals’ responses to videos are comparable to their responses to live demonstrators. Influence of glutathione levels and heat-shock on the steady-state levels of oxidative DNA base modifications in mammalian cells

The effects of thiols, ascorbic acid and thermal stress on the basal (steady-state) levels of oxidative DNA base modifications were studied. In various types of untreated cultured mammalian cells, the levels of total glutathione were found to be inversely correlated with the levels of DNA base modifications sensitive to the repair endonuclease Fpg protein, which include 8-hydroxyguanine (8-oxoG). A depletion of glutathione by treatment with buthionine sulphoximine increased the steady-state level in AS52 Chinese hamster cells by approximately 50%. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, kuinka sanaston käyttö kehittyy suomi toisena kielenä -oppijoiden teksteissä. Tarkastelun kohteena on sanavaraston rikkaus eli leksikaalinen diversiteetti. Aineistona on 1197 aikuisten ja koululaisten eri tekstilajeja edustavaa kirjoitusta, jotka on arvioitu valmiiksi Eurooppalaisen viitekehyksen mukaisille taitotasoille. Työ on osa Suomen Akatemian ja Jyväskylän yliopiston vuosina 2007-2009 rahoittamaa Cefling hanketta, jonka tehtävänä on selvittää, millaista kielitaito on kullakin Eurooppalaisessa viitekehyksessä kuvatulla kuudella taitotasolla. One objective in Finnish basic education is for pupils with disabilities or behavioral problems to be able to participate in mainstream education and ordinary classrooms. Positive behavior support (PBS) is an approach that offers multi-tiered behavior support for pupils. In addition to providing support at a universal level, educators need to have the necessary skills to provide more intensive individual support for pupils who need it. Check-in/Check-out (CICO) is a research-based individual support system that is widely used in PBS schools. Stereoselective syntheses of piperidinones and their modification by organometallic coupling reactions

Dehydropiperidinones stereoselectively obtained from N-arabinosyl imines were iodinated at the enaminone structure. Knochel iodine-magnesium exchange afforded Grignard compounds of these piperidinone derivatives which reacted, either directly or after transmetalation to zinc or copper intermediates, with alkyl-, aryl- or acylhalides to give correspondingly substituted piperidinones. Stereoselective conjugate allyl cuprate addition to a thus obtained 5-allyl dehydropiperidinone and ring-closing metathesis of the product gave a hydroquinolinone containing three stereogenic centers.
Poly(propylene imine) dendrimers functionalized with stilbene or 1,4-distyrylbenzene chromophores

Abstract Two generations of dendritic nanoparticles were prepared, which contain ( E )-stilbene or ( E , E )-1,4-distyrylbenzene chromophores in the 4 or 8 terminal positions of the propylene imine dendrons. The compounds show a highly efficient photoreactivity. On prolonged irradiation all stilbenoid chromophores were destroyed by oligomerization (crosslinking) and the typical absorption and fluorescence of the chromophores disappeared completely.
