This article presents and discusses views on grammar and its role in formal language learning amongst Finnish university students. The results are based on a questionnaire which was distributed to students at the University of Jyväskylä as part of institutional action research. The background to the project was a feeling amongst some teachers of increased divergence between student respectively language teacher understandings of the role of grammar in language teaching. A Robust Minimal Learning Machine based on the M-Estimator

In this paper we propose a robust Minimal Learning Machine (R-RLM) for regression problems. The proposed method uses a robust M-estimator to generate a linear mapping between input and output distances matrices of MLM. The R-MLM was tested on one synthetic and three real world datasets that were contaminated with an increasing number of outliers. The method achieved a performance comparable to the robust Extreme Learning Machine (R-RLM) and thus can be seen as a valid alternative for regression tasks on datasets with outliers. peerReviewed

Because of its regularity, it is relatively easy to learn to read and spell in Finnish. However, a specific hurdle in spelling acquisition seems to be the doubling of consonant letters. Finnish pre-service teachers’ perceptions of their strategic learning skills and collaboration dispositions

To support the development of pupils’ 21st-century skills, teachers themselves must also be competent in these skills and learn them during pre-service teacher education. The aim of this study is to investigate what kind of profiles emerge among Finnish first-year pre-service teachers’ (N = 872) in terms of perceptions of their strategic learning skills and collaboration dispositions and what background variables explain membership of the profiles found. Latent profile analysis showed five student profiles corresponding to perceived strategic learning skills and collaboration dispositions.
