Small intestine bacterial overgrowth and irritable bowel syndrome-related symptoms: Experience with Rifaximin

2009

AIM: To estimate the prevalence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in our geographical area (Western Sicily, Italy) by means of an observational study, and to gather information on the use of locally active, non-absorbable antibiotics for treatment of SIBO. METHODS: Our survey included 115 patients fulfilling the Rome II criteria for diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); a total of 97 patients accepted to perform a breath test with lactulose (BTLact), and those who had a positive test, received Rifaximin (Normix®, Alfa Wassermann) 1200 mg/d for 7 d; 3 wk after the end of treatment, the BTLact was repeated. RESULTS: Based on the BTLact results, SIBO was present in about 5…

Passive exposure to speech sounds modifies change detection brain responses in adults

2019

In early life auditory discrimination ability can be enhanced by passive sound exposure. In contrast, in adulthood passive exposure seems to be insufficient to promote discrimination ability, but this has been tested only with a single short exposure session in humans. We tested whether passive exposure to unfamiliar auditory stimuli can result in enhanced cortical discrimination ability and change detection in adult humans, and whether the possible learning effect generalizes to different stimuli. To address these issues, we exposed adult Finnish participants to Chinese lexical tones passively for 2 h per day on 4 consecutive days. Behavioral responses and the brain's event-related potenti…

Decoding Musical Training from Dynamic Processing of Musical Features in the Brain

2018

AbstractPattern recognition on neural activations from naturalistic music listening has been successful at predicting neural responses of listeners from musical features, and vice versa. Inter-subject differences in the decoding accuracies have arisen partly from musical training that has widely recognized structural and functional effects on the brain. We propose and evaluate a decoding approach aimed at predicting the musicianship class of an individual listener from dynamic neural processing of musical features. Whole brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data was acquired from musicians and nonmusicians during listening of three musical pieces from different genres. Six mus…

Instructions for External Focus of Attention Improved Taekwondo Kicking Performance Only Among Less Skilled Youth

2022

External focus of attention (EFA) studies among children have yielded more equivocal results than have those among adults. Some investigators have found an internal focus of attention (IFA) advantage in children and have explained their results by children’s generally lower skill levels, compared to adults. According to the constrained action hypothesis, children’s lower skill levels are not yet associated with over-learned automatic movement patterns, so their motor performance is not disrupted by IFA instructions. In this study, our objective was to examine a possible interaction effect between children’s skill levels and their exposure to either IFA or EFA instructions on motor performa…

A Novel Deep Learning Stack for APT Detection

2019

We present a novel Deep Learning (DL) stack for detecting Advanced Persistent threat (APT) attacks. This model is based on a theoretical approach where an APT is observed as a multi-vector multi-stage attack with a continuous strategic campaign. To capture these attacks, the entire network flow and particularly raw data must be used as an input for the detection process. By combining different types of tailored DL-methods, it is possible to capture certain types of anomalies and behaviour. Our method essentially breaks down a bigger problem into smaller tasks, tries to solve these sequentially and finally returns a conclusive result. This concept paper outlines, for example, the problems an…

State of the Art Literature Review on Network Anomaly Detection with Deep Learning

2018

As network attacks are evolving along with extreme growth in the amount of data that is present in networks, there is a significant need for faster and more effective anomaly detection methods. Even though current systems perform well when identifying known attacks, previously unknown attacks are still difficult to identify under occurrence. To emphasize, attacks that might have more than one ongoing attack vectors in one network at the same time, or also known as APT (Advanced Persistent Threat) attack, may be hardly notable since it masquerades itself as legitimate traffic. Furthermore, with the help of hiding functionality, this type of attack can even hide in a network for years. Additi…

Koulutusvienti – todellinen aarre : Agenda 2030 haasteet ratkaistavissa globaalisti : ”Ei meillä oppilaitostasolla ole hajuakaan siitä mitä koulutusv…

2021

Pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkoituksena oli selvittää suomalaisen koulutusviennin tekijöitä Varalan Urheiluopiston koulutustoiminnan kansainvälisen suunnittelun tarpeisiin. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on asiantuntijoiden näkemysten avulla tukea päätavoitetta. Tämän tutkimuksen erityisenä käytännön tavoitteena oli tuottaa Varalalle askelmerkkejä kansainvälisen toiminnan suunnitteluun kehittämismenetelmän keinoin. Tutkimus on laadullinen tutkimus ja aineistonkeruumenetelmänä tutkimuksessa käytettiin puolistrukturoitua kyselylomaketta (N=8) sekä puolistrukturoitua yksilöhaastattelua (N=6). Kyselyyn vastanneet sekä haastateltavat valikoituivat instituutionaalisen asemansa perusteella. Laadullisen ain…

Intraventricular insulin decreases kappa opioid-mediated sucrose intake in rats.

2002

The hormone insulin acts in the central nervous system (CNS) as a regulator of body adiposity and food intake. Recent work from our laboratory has provided evidence that one way by which insulin may decrease food intake is by decreasing the rewarding properties of food. Evidence from others suggests that endogenous opioids may mediate the palatable properties of foods, and insulin may decrease nonfood-related reward via interaction with some CNS kappa opioid systems. In the present study we examined the ability of insulin to interact with exogenous or endogenous kappa opioids to modulate feeding of palatable sucrose pellets by nondeprived rats. Insulin (5 mU intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.)…

Catalytic Enantioselective Aza-Reformatsky Reaction with Cyclic Imines

2016

A catalytic highly enantioselective aza-Reformatsky reaction with cyclic aldimines and ketimines for the synthesis of chiral b-amino esters with good yields and excellent enantioselectivities is reported.Areadily available diaryl prolinol is used as a chiral ligand, ZnMe2 as a zinc source and ethyl iodoacetate as reagent in the presence of air atmosphere. The reaction with cyclic ketimines generates a quaternary stereocenter with excellent levels of enantioselectivity. Furthermore, five-membered N-sulfonyl ketimines were used as electrophiles with good enantiomeric excesses, under the optimized reaction conditions. Moreover, several chemical transformations were performed with the chiral b-…
