Threats and attitudes toward Russian-speaking immigrants: a comparative study between younger and older Finns

Using integrated threat theory as a theoretical lens to detect negative attitudes toward minority groups, this study compares and contrasts the perceptions and attitudes of older and younger Finns toward Russian-speaking minorities in Finland. A sample of high school students between 16 and 20 years of age represented the younger generation, while individuals over 65 years of age represented the older generation. The total sample was 242. Results indicated that there is a positive correlation between threat perception and prejudice. This article focuses on skilled migration flows from Southern Europe into Mexico. From semi-structured interviews with Spanish and Italian immigrants living in four Mexican cities of Mexico, it addresses both reasons for immigration and labour incorporation in Mexican labour markets. Specifically, it explores: i) the role of the economic crisis and the lack of good employment in the countries of origin as a key factor when deciding an international migration; ii) the employment opportunities offered in Mexican labour markets for the highly-skilled immigrants, and iii) the role played by the Mexican state and its current immigration law when channelling this group into the labour market

Tutkimus toi esiin tärkeitä haasteita liittyen suomalaisen väestön nopeaan ikääntymiseen ja kansainväliseen muuttoliikkeeseen. Hoffmanin analyysi tunnisti tieteenaloja, joilla akateeminen liikkuvuus on vahvaa sekä aloja, joilla se on lähes olematonta. In the present chapter we will explore education success in mathematics, in particular as regards reinforcing problem solving, trying to overcome a widespread view of deficit, which leads to attention being focused on what students cannot do or do not know how to do and which, in the majority of cases, is due to poor language proficiency. By focusing solely on these areas one runs the risk of involving students in simple cognitive activities that require the memorisation of rules and algorithms and the application of resolution strategies, which have already been dealt with, instead of more complex cognitive activities such as problem solving and argumentation.
