Ageing is a process characterised by progressive loss of function in multiple different organ systems, such as the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. HLA-DR phenotypes and blood levels of T cell subsets

Blood mononuclear cell and T cell subsets values were analyzed in 53 Sicilian individuals according to HLA-DR phenotypes. The results demonstrate that DR1-positive subjects show a significant increase of blood T cell subsets whereas DR3-positive subjects show a non-significant decrease of these values. These results suggest that gene(s) associated with HLA-DR could be one of the factors which affect blood levels of T cell subsets.

SUMMARY (CBA × B10)F1 [(H-2k x H-2b)] mice produce two types of antigen-specific T-suppressor factor (TsF), which can be separated by affinity chromatography on anti-I-J monoclonal antibody. After reduction and alkylation, both chains of F1 TsF are required for biological activity. The HLA class II genes are susceptibility genes for autoimmune endocrine diseases; however, scarce data are available pertaining to the determinants of genetic susceptibility to polyglandular autoimmunity (PGA). A total of 300 consecutive and unselected patients with either PGA or monoglandular autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) and 100 healthy control subjects were genotyped for the HLA class II DRB1, -DQA1, and -DQB1 alleles. Compared to patients with AITD and controls, the HLA-DRB1*03 (pc =0.001), *04 (pc<0.001), -DQA1*03 (pc<0.001), and -DQB1*02 (pc =0.001) alleles were increased in patients with PGA.
