We studied the expression of villin, a microfilament-associated, actin-binding protein typical of brush-border microvilli, in a variety of human carcinomas by applying immunofluorescence microscopy to frozen sections and immunoblotting methods to tissue extracts using a rabbit antiserum and a monoclonal antibody specific for villin. All of the 24 primary and metastatic colorectal adenocarcinomas tested were uniformly and strongly positive for villin, with the immunocytochemical labeling concentrated at the luminal cell margin. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed for six weeks either a control diet containing 22% casein (C) and 5% fat (F) or a low-protein diet (6% C, 5% F) or high-lipid diet (30% C, 30% F). A group of rats received a control diet containing 50 ppm of Phenoclor DP6. Three major forms of cytochrome P-450, UT 50, BP 3a and MC 2 were purified from livers of DP6-fed rats and only two forms, UT 50 and PB 3a, were purified from control and dietary groups. The amino acid composition and the catalytic activities towards all substrates tested were only significantly modified in the purified UT 50 P-450 isozyme from rats fed the low-protein diet. Aim. We conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis of seven hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing strategies in blood donors. Methods. Three of the seven strategies were based on HCV diagnosis and reporting guidelines in Mexico and four were from previous and current recommendations outlined by the CDC. The strategies that were evaluated determine antibody levels according to the signal-to-cut-off (S/CO) ratio and use reflex Immunoblot (IMB) or HCV RNA tests to confirm true positive (TP) cases of chronic HCV infection. Immunonephelometric determination of the apolipoprotein A-II.

A fully mechanized immunonephelometric method is described for the rapid and specific determination of apolipoprotein A-II in serum. The method utilizes commercially available sheep antiserum against human apolipoprotein A-II. Nephelometry was performed with the Behring Nephelometer Analyzer (BNA). A single determination can be performed in 12 minutes, requiring 10 microliters sample volume. The measuring range is about 0.08 to 1.25 g/l apolipoprotein A-II. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) caused by Leishmania infantum is endemic in the Mediterranean basin with most of the infected human patients remaining asymptomatic. Recently, the saurian-associated Leishmania tarentolae was detected in human blood donors and in sheltered dogs. The circulation of L. infantum and L. tarentolae was investigated in humans, dogs and cats living in the Pelagie islands (Sicily, Italy) by multiple serological and molecular testing.
