Fungal polysaccharopeptide inhibits tumor angiogenesis and tumor growth in mice

Angiogenesis is crucial to tumor growth and metastasis, and interruption of this process is a prime avenue for therapeutic intervention of tumor proliferation. The present study has made use of the S180 tumor-bearing mouse model to investigate the polysaccharopeptide, PSP, isolated from the edible mushroom Coriolus versicolor, a herbal medicine known for its anti-angiogenesis properties. The involvement of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in heart exercise-related angiogenesis

Background Little is known about the involvement of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in cardiac vascular remodelling induced by exercise. Our aim was to evaluate and localize MMP-2 and MMP-9’s activities in relation to capillary proliferation in mouse hearts trained for 15, 30 and 45 days. Methods Sixty-three mice were randomly assigned to 7 groups: four control sedentary groups (C0, C15, C30 and C45) and three groups trained by an endurance protocol (T15, T30 and T45). Predictive Role of the p16 Immunostaining Pattern in Atypical Cervical Biopsies with Less Common High Risk HPV Genotypes

Localization of neuroglobin protein in the mouse brain.

Neuroglobin is a recently discovered vertebrate oxygen-binding respiratory protein. In situ hybridization data demonstrated that neuroglobin-mRNA is widely expressed in neuronal cells of the central and peripheral nervous systems as well as in endocrine cells. The present study was conducted to investigate the presence of neuroglobin protein in neurons of the mouse brain. A polyclonal antibody directed against a synthetic peptide of neuroglobin was raised in rabbits and affinity-purified. Neurofilaments, which are exclusively found in nerve cells, are one of the earliest recognizable features of the maturing nervous system. The differential distribution of neurofilament proteins in varying degrees of phosphorylation within a neuron provides the possibility of selectively demonstrating either somata and dendrites or axons. Limitations of Immunohistochemistry in Diagnosis of a Primary Mucinous Carcinoma of the Skin and Its Metastasis

We describe the case of a 67-year-old female patient who presented with an unclear swelling on the right supraclavicular neck, two years after resection of a mucinous carcinoma on the right mastoid. Two pathological reports from separate universities diagnosed the primary mastoid skin lesion as a metastatic adenocarcinoma. Strikingly, GATA binding protein 3 (GATA3) and mammaglobin, both immunomarkers found in breast cancer, were positive. An urgent search for the primary tumor most likely in the breast was commenced. Spatial and temporal dynamics of innervation during the development of fetal human pancreas.

The delineation of pancreatic nerve innervations during fetal life may contribute to our understanding of pancreatic pain modalities after birth. The aim of this study was to characterize the spatial and temporal distribution of nerve structures in the human pancreas throughout gestation. Computer-based image morphometry with piecewise polynomial interpolation analysis was performed to quantify nervous structures in the head, body and tail of the pancreas. Histiocytosis with mixed cell populations

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) and juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) are thought to originate from a common stem cell precursor, with divergent differentiation under different microenvironmental conditions. We describe an exceptional case of multiple cutaneous lesions in a 10-year-old boy, in which the coexistence of both LCH and JXG cell populations is found in every single lesion. The presence of Birbeck granules and CD207 (langerin) immunostaining in the LCH component would argue against the diagnosis of indeterminate cell histiocytosis (ICH). This unique case gives additional support to the hypothesis of a potentially common histogenesis for LCH and JXG.
