Comparative analysis of impacted upper canines: Panoramic radiograph Vs Cone Beam Computed Tomography.

2016

Background The use of CBCT exam in the study of IMC is not new. However, it's still not known in what specific aspects CBCT exam shows a better result than then conventional exams. The aim of this study was to compare and conclude in what way the opinion regarding upper canine impaction differed when observing a panoramic image compared to the observation of a set of CBCT reconstructions. Material and Methods Twenty patients (10 males and 10 females) with a total of 28 impacted maxillary canines were identified from the database of the Department of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra. For each canine, two different images were available: a panoramic image and a set of CBC…

Determinants of maxillary canine impaction : retrospective clinical and radiographic study

2017

Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate determinants of maxillary canine impaction taking into account both canine position related variables and the pattern of facial growth. Material and Methods: A retrospective clinical and radiographic analysis was carried out on 109 patients aged between 9 and 10 years at the time of first evaluation. At baseline, SN-GoMe angle, the interincisal angle, the canine angle a and the canine distance d were used to characterize canine location and vertical facial growth. At the end of a two years follow up period the eruption state of each canine of each patient was recorded and accordingly classified as erupted or impacted on a clinical and radiogr…

Condylar response to large mandibular advancement combined with maxillary impaction and counterclockwise rotation: A computed tomographic study.

2018

Background This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the evaluation of the condylar position, angulation and intercondylar distance and assess the changes in these parameters before and after bimaxillary surgery, preformed with the critical movments of Le Fort I osteotomy (for impaction of the maxilla and conterclockwise rotation of the upper occlusal plane) and Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy (BSSO) for mandibular advancement (> 8mm). Material and methods Twenty class II patients successfully treated with BSSO of the mandible, in conjunction with Le Fort I osteotomy, were studied to evaluate the condylar changes before and after surgery. The…

Spontaneous eruption of severely impacted teeth : the report of two cases

2019

The unerupted and impacted tooth is a common problem and the reason for many orthodontic and pediatric dental referrals, yet the approach to their management is still an area of controversy. This article presents two cases of severely impacted teeth that spontaneously erupted in the maxillary and mandibular arches. The first patient, a 9-year-old girl, presented a severe impaction of mandibular right and left second premolars. The second patient, a 7-year-old girl, presented with a severely impacted maxillary central incisor. In both cases, the teeth spontaneously erupted into excellent positions without surgical procedures and orthodontic traction. This raises important questions concernin…

Early identification of permanent maxillary canine impaction: A radiographic comparative study in a Mexican population

2019

Background Opportune diagnosis, prediction, and interceptive treatment of permanent maxillary canine (PMC) impaction is fundamental for pediatric dentists and orthodontists. In children and young adolescents, diagnostic information obtained from a panoramic radiograph is valuable for the overview and prediction of a potential PMC ectopic eruption into the oral cavity. The aim of the present study was to calculate and compare the prevalence of impaction of PMC in a Mexican pediatric sample (7 to 13 years old), through the use of the Ericson & Kurol (EK/L) and the Power & Short (PS) measurement analyses performed on panoramic radiographs. Material and methods This investigation was a cross-se…

Keratocystic odontogenic tumor: A biopsy service’s experience with 104 solitary, multiple and recurrent lesions

2016

Background Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) is a clinically significant cystic lesion of odontogenic origin. This study aimed to retrospectively review and describe the clinicopathologic features of KCOT and to objectively compare the clinical and histological features of solitary, multiple and recurrent KCOT in a Saudi Arabian population. Material and Methods Biopsy request forms, pathology records and archival materials (all histological slides) of 104 cases of KCOT from 75 patients were retrieved. Demographic and clinical details as well as histological evaluation were analyzed and compared between the 3 groups using chi-squared or Mann-Whitney tests of association as appropriate. R…

Prevalence of maxillary canine impaction in skeletal Class III malocclusions compared to Class I malocclusions

2019

Background The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate if an orthodontic population of Class III malocclusion patients shows a different prevalence of maxillary canine impaction than Class I subjects. Material and methods Fifty-eight subjects were retrospectively selected and assigned to the Class I group (n= 32) or the Class III group (n= 26), depending on the ANB and WITS values. Lateral cephalograms were used to collect angular and linear measurements that described the skeletal and dental maxillary features of the subjects, while orthopantomography was used to assess the impaction or the correct eruption of the maxillary canines. An independent samples T-test or a Mann-Whitney …

AbstractEctopic impaction of the mandibular third molar in the condylar region is an extremely rare condition. This report describes a case of an impacted tooth in the sub-condylar region in a woman with hemifacial discomfort and recurrent swelling. A description of the surgical management of this pathology is given as well as a literatura review.

Easy removal of a large mucus plug with a flexible paediatric bronchoscope after administration of rhDNase (Pulmozyme).

2006

Mucoid impaction and plastic bronchitis are relatively rare disorders affecting patients of any age. Here we report the case of mucoid impaction developing in a four-year-old child as a complication of pneumonic infection treated four weeks prior. p.a. chest X-ray and fiberoptic bronchoscopy showed atelectasis and the location of a mucus cast in the left upper lobe. After extraction of the cast via the suction channel of the bronchoscope had failed, we administered 2.5 mg of undiluted recombinant human deoxyribonuclease (rhDNase) instilled directly over the affected area of occlusion for 15 minutes. This mucolytic agent mobilized the cast by reducing viscoelasticity and adherence of mucus. …

Prevalence of Third Molar in Opg and Role of Them in Orthodontics

2021

ABSTRAKTS Mērķis: Šī retrospektīvā pētījuma mērķis bija izpētīt trešo molāru ietekmi uz ortodontiskās ārstēšanas gaitu. Pētījumā galvenā uzmanība tiek pievērsta retinētiem trešajiem molāriem, premolāru ekstrakcijām, lai iegūtu iespējamu vietu šķilties trešajiem molāriem un pārbaudīt literatūras datus par trešo molāru ietekmi uz incisīvu saspiestību. Metodes: Tika analizēti 81 rentgena uzņēmumu ( ortopantomogrammas- OPG) no 81 pacienta. OPG ietvēra dzimumu, dzimšanas datumu, reģistrēšanas datumu, esošo trešo molāru daudzumu, trešo molāru ekstrakciju pirms ortodontiskās ārstāšanas un kāda veida ortodontiskās aparatūras izmantoja pēc trešo molāru ekstrakcijas. Rezultāti: No 81 pētījuma dalībni…
