β-delayed neutron emission of r-process nuclei at the N = 82 shell closure
2021
This experiment was performed at RI Beam Factory operated by RIKEN Nishina Center and CNS, University of Tokyo. O.H, T.D, P.J.W, C.G.B, C.J.G and D.K would like to thank STFC, UK for support. This research was sponsored in part by the Office of Nuclear Physics, U.S. Department of Energy under Award No. DE-FG02-96ER40983 (UTK) and DEAC05-00OR22725 (ORNL), and by the National Nuclear Security Administration under the Stewardship Science Academic Alliances program through DOE Award No. DENA0002132. This work was supported by National Science Foundation under Grants No. PHY-1430152 (JINA Center for the Evolution of the Elements), No. PHY-1565546 (NSCL), and No. PHY-1714153 (Central Michigan Uni…
The taint of torture and the brazilian legal system
2019
In Brazil, the practice of torture intertwines deeply with its own history. The literature on the subject has had a greater intensification on its registers during the Dictatorial Regime (1964 to 1985). In spite of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988, Brazil only makes efforts to investigate the crimes of torture of this period to comply with the provisions of the United Nations in 2011. Within this scenario, the NationalTruth Commission (Law 12.528, of November 2011) was created with the purpose of clarifying the facts and circumstances of cases concerning human rights violations, as well as the Law on Access to Information (Law 12.527 of November 2011), which have regulated the constitutio…
Sabiedrība Latvijas teritorijā: saskarsmes un procesi vēsturē: tēzes, 2022. gada 3. un 4. marts
2022
This volume brings together the abstracts of papers presented at the session “Society in the Territory of Latvia: Contacts and Processes in History” held by the Institute of Latvian History, University of Latvia on 3–4 March 2022 in the frame of the 80th International Scientific Conference of the University of Latvia. The abstracts reflect the contribution by historians, archaeologists and ethnologists from the Institute of Latvian History, University of Latvia, National Library of Latvia, Specially Protected Cultural Monument – Turaida Museum Reserve, and the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia to the study of topical issues in history. Archaeological research reveals issues of origin and d…
Fine Structure of the Tunic ofCiona intestinalisL. II. Tunic morphology, cell distribution and their functional importance
1981
Ciona intestinalis L. tunic architecture and cell distribution were investigated with the electron microscope. The observations showed that the ascidian covering is formed by a thin outer cuticle, a subcuticle of variable width and a large single layer of ground substance. “Large granule”, morula, phagocyte and granulocyte are the cellular types encountered; they appear mainly in highly vacuolated states and are distributed throughout the whole tunic. The “large granule” cells, however, are mainly seen in the cuticle layer and the morula cells appear mostly in the outer zone of the ground substance. The role of these cells in tunic construction, repair and regeneration as well as their scav…
Endocannabinoid signals in the control of emotion.
2008
The appropriate control of emotional responses evoked by environmental stimuli is an important innate mechanism for ensuring quality of life and even for survival. Inappropriate responses and decreased abilities to adjust to changed environmental situations can lead to psychiatric disorders, such as posttraumatic stress disorders, phobia and depression. Endocannabinoid signalling has emerged as one of the regulatory systems of the brain supporting appropriate emotional responses. As various components of the endocannabinoid system have become therapeutic targets, understanding the endocannabinoids’ mechanism of action is an important research topic for a rationalized drug design and optimal…
Mobilization upon Cooling
2021
Abstract Phase transitions between different aggregate states are omnipresent in nature and technology. Conventionally, a crystalline phase melts upon heating as we use ice to cool a drink. Already in 1903, Gustav Tammann speculated about the opposite process, namely melting upon cooling. So far, evidence for such “inverse” transitions in real materials is rare and limited to few systems or extreme conditions. Here, we demonstrate an inverse phase transition for molecules adsorbed on a surface. Molybdenum tetraacetate on copper(111) forms an ordered structure at room temperature, which dissolves upon cooling. This transition is mediated by molecules becoming mobile, i.e., by mobilization up…
SAPERE ECONOMICO E METODO SCIENTIFICO NELL’ILLUMINISMO LOMBARDO: NOTE DA “IL CAFFÈ”
2011
Economic knowledge and scientific method in the lombard enlightenment. Notes from «Il caffè». The connections, emerging between the 16th and the 18th century, between the evolution of economic knowledge and the rise of the scientific method, are important research topics for historians of economic ideas. However, further research on the application of the scientific method is still needed, especially when we come to the analysis of how economic principles took shape in Lombardy during the Enlightenment. The same need for further research concerns the debates on economic policy during the Age of Reforms in the latter half of the eighteenth century. This is even more necessary for Milanese En…
Psychosomatic Disorders Among Adopted People
2012
Adoption is connected with a number of traumatic experiences, of which the experience of being abandoned by biological parents is of major significance. The fact of being abandoned usually involves a stay at a hospital and later on in various forms of family or institutionalized foster care, until the child is finally placed in an adoptive family. An important research question, both on theoretical and empirical grounds, concerns the psychosomatic dependencies between adoption and children’s psycho-physical development. The article presents an attempted synthesis of the theoretical findings and the results of the conducted empirical research. Considerations, apart from its cognitive aim, al…
