A reactive GRASP algorithm for the container loading problem with load-bearing constraints
2014
The container loading problem consists in packing a set of boxes of different dimensions into a large container of fixed dimensions, usually with the objective of maximising the container load. In practical problems, besides the geometric constraints of not exceeding the container dimensions and ensuring the non-overlapping of boxes, other requirements may appear, such as total weight, weight balance or support. In this paper we address the problem of maximising container volume utilisation while respecting a set of practical constraints: full support of boxes, allowed orientations and load-bearing capacity. We have developed different heuristics for solving the problem and we have combined…
Fuzzified Game Tree Search – Precision vs Speed
2012
Most game tree search algorithms consider finding the optimal move. That is, given an evaluation function they guarantee that selected move will be the best according to it. However, in practice most evaluation functions are themselves approximations and cannot be considered "optimal". Besides, we might be satisfied with nearly optimal solution if it gives us a considerable performance improvement. In this paper we present the approximation based implementations of the fuzzified game tree search algorithm. The paradigm of the algorithm allows us to efficiently find nearly optimal solutions so we can choose the "target quality" of the search with arbitrary precision --- either it is 100% (pr…
Heuristics for the bandwidth colouring problem
2010
The bandwidth colouring problem consists of assigning a colour to each vertex of a graph, so that the absolute value of the difference between the colours of adjacent vertices is at least the value of the weight of the associated edge. This problem generalises the classical vertex colouring problem and different heuristics have recently been proposed to obtain high quality solutions. In this paper we describe both memory-based and memory-less methods to solve the bandwidth colouring problem. In particular we propose new constructive and improvement methods based on tabu search and GRASP. Comparison of our results with previously reported instances and existing heuristics indicate that the m…
Influence of expressive versus mechanical musical performance on short-term memory for musical excerpts
2012
Recognition memory for details of musical phrases (discrimination between targets and similar lures) improves for up to 15 s following the presentation of a target, during continuous listening to the ongoing piece. This is attributable to binding of stimulus features during that time interval. The ongoing-listening paradigm is an ecologically valid approach for investigating short-term memory, but previous studies made use of relatively mechanical MIDI-produced stimuli. The present study assessed whether expressive performances would modulate the previously reported finding. Given that expressive performances introduced slight differences between initially presented targets and their target…
Feedback-Based Algorithm for Negotiating Human Preferences and Making Risk Assessment Decisions
2023
Work equipment risk assessment is essential for guaranteeing health and safety of workers in industrial contexts. Many and varied hazards are involved in the use of equipment, which have to be periodically subject to thorough controls required by law. This research proposes a novel hybrid decision-making framework aimed at integrating flexible negotiation on human preferences. This goal will be achieved by establishing effective feedback exchanges with expert(s) familiarwith the field of risk and maintenance of work equipment. We extend a previous research that proposed a user-friendly negotiation procedure to increase consistency of judgments provided by experts about relevant risk factors. …
On the strength of the U A (1) anomaly at the chiral phase transition in N f = 2 QCD
2016
We study the thermal transition of QCD with two degenerate light flavours by lattice simulations using $O(a)$-improved Wilson quarks. Temperature scans are performed at a fixed value of $N_t = (aT)^{-1}=16$, where $a$ is the lattice spacing and $T$ the temperature, at three fixed zero-temperature pion masses between 200 MeV and 540 MeV. In this range we find that the transition is consistent with a broad crossover. As a probe of the restoration of chiral symmetry, we study the static screening spectrum. We observe a degeneracy between the transverse isovector vector and axial-vector channels starting from the transition temperature. Particularly striking is the strong reduction of the split…
Effect of genetic variation in CYP450 on Gonadal impairment in a European cohort of female childhood cancer survivors, based on a candidate gene appr…
2021
Background: Female childhood cancer survivors (CCSs) carry a risk of therapy-related gonadal dysfunction. Alkylating agents (AA) are well-established risk factors, yet inter-individual variability in ovarian function is observed. Polymorphisms in CYP450 enzymes may explain this variability in AA-induced ovarian damage. We aimed to evaluate associations between previously identified genetic polymorphisms in CYP450 enzymes and AA-related ovarian function among adult CCSs. Methods: Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels served as a proxy for ovarian function in a discovery cohort of adult female CCSs, from the pan-European PanCareLIFE cohort (n = 743
Effects of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Training on Endurance Performance
2016
Various electrical stimulation modalities are used as adjuvants to conventional training and rehabilitation programs to increase bodily function or to reduce symptoms, such as pain. One of these modalities, neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), commonly refers to the transcutaneous application of electrical currents to a target muscle group with the objective to depolarize motor neurons and consequently elicit skeletal muscle contractions of substantial intensity (usually ranging from 10 to 60% of the maximal voluntary contraction). Because NMES can generate considerable muscle tension, it is frequently used as a strength training technique for healthy adults and athletes, but also a…
Performance improvement of a novel combined water turbine
2020
Abstract Nowadays, industrials and researchers are looking for renewable energy resources due to the increase of energy demand. Recently, the ability of combined turbines in harnessing energy from water current has increased their renewed interest. However, there still exist a big knowledge gap to select the optimal design of these turbines. In this paper, systematic studies of stand-alone helical Savonius and delta bladed Darrieus turbines were carried out using experimental methods as a precursor to analyze their roles in hybrid configuration. By varying the attachment angle, two hybrid configurations were tested experimentally. Using the optimal attachment angle, six hybrid configuration…
